University of Central Florida College of Social Sciences Thesis; Early psychological research on achievement motivation has focused on the effects of fear of failure and the wish to succeed as component parts of need for achievement (nAch). Achievement motivation is defined as a need to achieve for its own sake rather than for the benefits of such achievement (Kimble and Garmezy, 1968, p. 691). Achievement motivation is defined as a need to achieve for its own sake rather than for the benefits of such achievement (Kimble and Garmezy, 1968, p. 691). It is considered to be a fairly stable personality characteristic, not particularly goal specific (Berkowitz, 1972, p. 115), involving two specific aspects--wish (or hope) to succeed and fear of failure. The first is seen as an approach motive which focuses on anticipation of reward. The second, fear of failure, is seen as an avoidance motive involving anticipation of punishment (McClelland, Clark, Roby, and Atkinson, 1958).

Feedback consisted of signals from a traffic light with green indicating acceptable levels, yellow indicating slightly higher levels and red indicating unacceptable levels. Other behaviors, running, hitting, pushing and kicking, were measured incidentally. Results indicate that feedback plus reinforcement was effective in reducing noise levels. Feedback alone was also effective, but to a lesser degree. No response - response relationship was found to exist between noise level and the other behaviors.

CAI is a relatively recent development in the area of education and training, whereas PI enjoys a somewhat longer history. Nonetheless, PI lies at the very heart of CAI and forms the base on which CAI exists. CAI then, may be viewed as a mode or type of PI. B. F. Skinner's work in the 1940's with the principles of operant conditioning laid the groundwork for the concept of PI (Garner, 1966). Operant conditioning is a type of conditioning whereby an emitted response is reinforced. The reinforcement should increase the strength of the response and presumably increase the chances that the response will occur again (Munn, Fernald, & Fernald, 1972). Operant conditioning, in which an individual is conditioned to behave in the direction of a predetermined goal, is achieved through the contingent reinforcement of a series of steps. These steps of action are linked together in a chain of successive approximations. 1 Each link of the chain approximates the end goal slightly more than the previous link. This chain of successive approximations is followed until the end behavior is achieved (Garner, 1966). 2 In this respect, PI makes use of the sequencing of small successive steps and contingent reinforcement to achieve some desired end goal , namely, achieving the lesson objective. This "Skinnerian" or linear form of PI requires the student to proceed through a forward moving chain in a step-by-step fashion until the end behavior is achieved. The step-by-step sequence, as it pertains to PI, refers to the individual segments or frames of a PI lesson. Each frame might be considered one step of the entire PI lesson. These frames, which should flow logically from one to the next, should build upon each other and approximate the lesson objective. Periodically, progress should be monitored in order to assure that the student is comprehending the lesson material (Wilson and Tosti, 1972). Typically, this is accomplished by incorporating multiple choice or true/false questions within the PI lesson itself . By so doing, student performances can be checked and appropriate actions taken within the concept of reinforcement. Deterline (1962) argues that all learned behavior is based on, reinforcement. Individuals learn by acting on their environment and, in turn, are influenced by the consequences of their actions (Deterline, 1962) . ""Then consequences strengthen behavior, reinforcement is said to have taken place.

Of further interest to this study was whether or not once trained, the experience of utilizing these skills in a structured setting would further increase their self concepts and decrease their personal problems. Fifteen adolescent males who were residing in a residential center for children in need of supervision were randomly assigned to one of three experimental groups. The Piers-Harris Children's Self Concept Scale and the Mooney Problem Checklists - Junior High Form, were administered to all three groups prior to involving two of the groups in an interpersonal skills training program, after the interpersonal skills training program, and after the field experience. A peer facilitation program, Caring and sharing: Becoming a peer facilitator (Myrick & Erney, 1978) was utilized to teach subjects interpersonal skills twice a week for four weeks. At the conclusion of the interpersonal skills training program, half of the participants in the training group planned and presented affective activities in a fourth grade classroom and facilitated small group discussions twice a week for two weeks. No significant results were found on the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale for either the interpersonal skills training only group or the interpersonal skills training plus field experience group. However, subjects who participated in the interpersonal skills training group plus the field experience utilizing these skills reported significantly less personal problems on the Hone and Family Scale and the Boy and Girl Relations Scale of the Mooney Problems Checklist - Junior High Form then did the interpersonal skills training only group and the control group (p<.05). Thus, it appears from this study that interpersonal skills training alone does not have an effect on the self concept or personal problems of troubled adolescent males nor does the opportunity to utilize these skills in a field experience influence their self concepts. However, it does appear that training troubled adolescent males in interpersonal skills and giving them the opportunity to utilize these skills in a field experience does have some impact on their perception of their personal problems.

Show moreFlorida Technological University College of Social Sciences Thesis; There is a need to find effective ways to treat depression, due to its high incidence and to the severity of its consequences. The first psychological treatment of depression came with the advent of psychoanalysis, but today the theories dealing with the etiology and treatment of depression range from genetic and biological approaches to an existential conceptualization. While briefly reviewing these various current approaches, the primary purpose of this paper is to present the behavioral/social learning approach to the understanding and treatment of depression. The specific theoretical formulations, methods of assessment and treatment approaches characteristic of the behavioral/social learning approach will be reviewed. Illustrative clinical and research studies concerning therapeutic outcomes are evaluated. The results indicate that while behavioral approaches appear to be effective in the treatment of depression, additional systematic research must be conducted before final judgments can be made as to whether behavioral treatment of depression will become the treatment of choice.
