Show moreUniversity of Central Florida College of Engineering Thesis; The concept of averaging has been used extensively in the modeling of power electronic circuits to overcome their inherent time-variant nature. Among various methods, the PWM switch modeling approach is most widely accepted in the study of closed-loop stability and transient response because of its accuracy and simplicity. However, a non-ideal PWM switch model considering conduction losses is not available except for converters operating in continuous conduction mode (CCM) and under small ripple conditions. Modeling of conductor losses under large ripple conditions has not been reported in the open literature, especially when the converter operates in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). In this dissertation, new models are developed to include conduction losses in the non-ideal PWM switch model under CCM and DCM conditions. The developed model is verified through two converter examples and the effect of conduction losses on the steady state and dynamic responses of the converter is also studied. Another major constraint of the PWM switch modeling approach is that it heavily relies on finding the three-terminal PWM switch. This requirement severely limits its application in modeling single-switch single-stage power factor correction (PFC) converters, where more complex topological structures and switching actions are often encountered. In this work, we developed a new modeling approach which extends the PWM switch concept by identifying the charging and discharging voltages applied to the inductors. The new method can be easily applied to derive large-signal models for a large group of PFC converters and the procedure is elaborated through a specific example. Finally, analytical results regarding harmonic contents and power factors of various PWM converters in PFC applications are also presented here.

For faster data transfer, a decrease in the output voltage is needed. This decrease causes small duty cycle that is accompanied by critical problems which impairs the efficiency. Therefore, these problems need to be addressed. Transformer-based non-isolated topologies are not new approaches to extend the duty cycle and avoid the associated drawbacks. High leakage, several added components and complicated driving and control schemes are some of the trade-offs to expand the duty cycle. The objective of this work is to present a new dc-dc buck-based topology, which extends the duty cycle with minimum drawbacks by adding two transformers that can be integrated to decrease the size and two switches with zero voltage switching (ZVS). Another issue addressed in this thesis is deriving a small signal model for a two-input two-phase buck converter as an introduction to a new evolving field of multi-input converters.

Show moreRecent research activities focused on improving the steady-state as well as the dynamic behavior of DC - DC converters for proper system performance, by proposing different design methods and control approaches with growing tendency to using digital implementation over analog practices. Because of the rapid advancement in semiconductors and microprocessor industry, digital control grew in popularity among PWM converters and is taking over analog techniques due to availability of fast speed microprocessors, flexibility and immunity to noise and environmental variations. Furthermore, increased interest in Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) makes it a convenient design platform for digitally controlled converters. The objective of this research is to propose new digital control schemes, aiming to improve the steady-state and transient responses of a high switching frequency FPGA-based digitally controlled DC-DC converters. The target is to achieve enhanced performance in terms of tight regulation with minimum power consumption and high efficiency at steady-state, as well as shorter settling time with optimal over- and undershoots during transients. The main task is to develop new and innovative digital PWM techniques in order to achieve: 1. Tight regulation at steady-state: by proposing high resolution DPWM architecture,based on Digital Clock Management (DCM) resources available on FPGA boards. The proposed architecture Window-Masked Segmented Digital Clock Manager-FPGA based Digital Pulse Width Modulator Technique, is designed to achieve high resolution operating at high switching frequencies with minimum power consumption. 2. Enhanced dynamic response: by applying a shift to the basic saw-tooth DPWM signal, in order to benefit from the best linearity and simplest architecture offered by the conventional counter-comparator DPWM. This proposed control scheme will help the compensator reach the steady-state value faster. Dynamically Shifted Ramp Digital Control Technique for Improved Transient Response in DC-DC Converters, is projected to enhance the transient response by dynamically controlling the ramp signal of the DPWM unit.

A new solar-based single-stage grid-connected inverter system can achieve higher efficiency by reducing the power semiconductor switching loss and output stable and synchronized sinusoid current into the utility grid. Controlled by the digital signal processor, the inverter can also draw maximum power from the solar array, thereby maximizing the utilization of the solar array. In Chapter 1, a comparison between the traditional two-stage inverter and the single-stage inverter is made. To increase the ability of power processing and enhance the efficiency further, a full-bridge topology is chosen, which applies the phase-shift technique to achieve zero-voltage transition. In Chapter 2, average-mode and switch-mode Pspice simulations are applied. All the features of the inverter system are verified, such as stability, zero voltage transition and feed-forward compensation, etc. All these simulation results provide useful design tips for prototyping. In Chapter 3, a phase-shift controller is designed based on UCC3895. Also, a detailed design procedure is given, including key components selection, transformer and inductor design and driver circuits design. In Chapter 4, experimental results of a prototype DC/DC converter are presented and analyzed. By optimization of the circuit, the problems of the prototype are solved and the prototype is working stably. The thesis' conclusion is given in Chapter 5.

With the speed improvement and cost reduction of digital control, digital controller is becoming a trend for DC-DC converters in addition to existed digital monitoring and management technology. In this thesis, digital control is investigated for DC-DC converters applications. To deeply understand the whole control systems, DC-DC converter models are investigated based on averaged state-space modeling. Considering half-bridge isolated DC-DC converter with a current doublers rectifier has advantages over other topologies especially in the application of low-voltage and high-current DC-DC converters, the thesis take it as an example for digital control modeling and implementation. In Chapter 2, unified steady-state DC models and small-signal models are developed for both symmetric and asymmetric controlled half-bridge DC-DC converters. Based on the models, digital controller design is implemented. In Chapter 3, digital modeling platforms are established based on Matlab, Digital PID design and corresponding simulation results are provided. Also some critical issues and practical requirements are discussed. In Chapter 4, a DSP-based digital controller is implemented with the TI's DSP chip TMS320F2812. Related implementation methods and technologies are discussed. Finally the experimental results of a DSP-based close-loop of HB converter are provided and analyzed in Chapter 5, and thesis conclusions are given in Chapter 6.

Show moreA Web-based circuit design package has been improved and evaluated to provide students with an enhanced and innovative teaching tools package for the electrical circuit design course. The project objectives can be summarized as follows: 1) developing enhanced problem solving skills using a Web-based environment, 2) developing the design skills and sharpening the critical thinking process, 3) developing a generic and comprehensive teaching/learning circuit package as an extention to the Electrical Engineering virtual lab environment, which gives students the capability to practice and experience all the circuit design skills with minimum cost and effort. The project provides the students with an enhanced and powerful graphical computer aided design (CAD) tool by which students can carry out an online simulation of AC and DC designs with the capability to plot simulation results graphically. The proposed prototype is implemented by JAVA, which is used to to implement Web-based applications with different platform support. The project provides students with an enhanced graphical user interface (GUI) by which they can build any electrical circuit using either text or schematic entry format, generate the Netlist, which describes all circuit information (circuit topology, circuit attributes and so on), and simulate the design by parsing the Netlist to CIRML format, which is sent over the network to the remote server. The server will process the CIRML data and run the simulation using PSPICE and eventually send back the simulation results to the client for display.

Show moreSolar power is becoming ever more popular in a variety of applications. It is particularly attractive because of its abundance, renewability, and environment friendliness. Solar powered spacecraft systems have ever-expanding loads with stringent power regulation specifications. Moreover, they require a light and compact design of their power system. These constraints make the optimization of power harvest from solar arrays a critical task. Florida Power Electronics Center (FPEC) at UCF set to develop a modular fault-tolerant power system architecture for space applications. This architecture provides a number of very attractive features including Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) and uniform power stress distribution across the system. MPPT is a control technique that leads the system to operate its solar sources at the point where they provide maximum power. This point constantly moves following changes in ambient operating conditions. A digital controller is setup to locate it in real time while optimizing other operating parameters. This control scheme can increase the energy yield of the system by up to 45%, and thus significantly reduces the size and weight of the designed system. The modularity of the system makes it easy to prototype and expand. It boosts its reliability and allows on-line reconfiguration and maintenance, thus reducing down-time upon faults. This thesis targets the analysis and optimization of this architecture. A new modeling technique is introduced for MPPT in practical environments, and a novel digital power stress distribution scheme is proposed in order to properly distribute peak and thermal stress and improve reliability. A 2kW four-channel prototype of the system was built and tested. Experimental results confirm the theoretical improvements, and promise great success in the field.

Both of the above designs have advantages and disadvantages depending on operating parameters. The following work will compare the Unfolding Output Stage and the SPWM Output Stage at various power levels and power densities. Input stage topologies are similarly examined in order to determine the best design approach for each output stage under consideration.

Show moreThis work is focused on exploring advanced solutions for space power management and distribution (PMAD) systems. As spacecraft power requirements continue to increase, paralleled by the pressures for reducing cost and overall system weight, power electronics engineers will continue to face major redesigns of the space power systems in order to meet such challenges. Front-end PMAD systems, used to interface the solar sources and battery backup to the distribution bus, need to be designed with increased efficiency, reliability, and power density. A new family of integrated single-stage power converter structures is introduced here. This family allows the interface and control of multiple power sources and storage devices in order to optimize utilization of available resources. Employing single-stage power topologies, these converters control power flow efficiently and cost-effectively. This is achieved by modifying the operation and control strategies of isolated soft-switched half-bridge and full-bridge converters--two of the most popular two-port converter topologies. These topologies are reconfigured and utilized to realize three power processing paths. These paths simultaneously utilize the power devices, allowing increased functionality while promising reduced losses and enhanced power densities. Each of the proposed topologies is capable of performing simultaneous control of two of its three ports. Control objectives include battery or ultra-capacitor charge regulation, solar array maximum power point tracking (MPPT), and/or bus voltage regulation. Another advantage of the proposed power structure is that current engineering design concepts can be used to optimize the new topologies in a fashion similar to the mother topologies. This includes component selection and magnetic design procedures, as well as achieving soft-switching for increased efficiency at higher switching frequencies. Galvanic isolation of the load port through high-frequency transformers provides design flexibility for high step-up/step-down conversion ratios. It further allows the converters to be used as power electronics building blocks (PEBB) with outputs connected in different series/parallel combinations to meet different load requirements. Utilizing such converters promises significant savings in size, weight, and costs of the power management system as well as the devices it manages. Chapter 1 of this dissertation provides an introduction to the requirements, challenges, and trends of space PMAD. A review of existing multi-port converter technologies and digital control techniques is given in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 discusses different PMAD system architectures. It outlines the basic concepts used for PMAD integration and discusses the potential for improvement. Chapters 4 and 5 present and discuss the operation and characteristics of three different integrated multi-port converters. Chapter 6 presents improved methods for practical digital control of switching converters, which are especially useful in complex multi-objective controllers used for PMAD. This is followed by conclusions and suggested future work.

Show moreThe power requirements for leading edge digital integrated circuits have become increasingly demanding. Power converter systems must be faster, more flexible, more precisely controllable and easily monitored. Meanwhile, in addition to control process, the new functions such as power sequencing, communication with other systems, voltage dynamic programming,load line specifications, phase current balance, protection, power status monitoring and system diagnosis are going into today's power supply systems. Digital controllers, compared withanalog controllers, are in a favorable position to provide basic feedback control as well as those power management functions with lower cost and great flexibility. The dissertation gives an overview of digital controlled power supply systems bycomparing with conventional analog controlled power systems in term of system architecture,modeling methods, and design approaches. In addition, digital power management, as one of the most valuable and "cheap" function, is introduced in Chapter 2. Based on a leading-edge digital controller product, Chapter 3 focuses on digital PID compensator design methodologies, design issues, and optimization and development of digital controlled single-phase point-of-load (POL)dc-dc converter. Nonlinear control is another valuable advantage of digital controllers over analogcontrollers. Based on the modeling of an isolated half-bridge dc-dc converter, a nonlinear control method is proposed in Chapter 4. Nonlinear adaptive PID compensation scheme is implemented based on digital controller Si8250. The variable PID coefficient during transients improves power system's transient response and thus output capacitance can be reduced to save cost. In Chapter 5, another nonlinear compensation algorithm is proposed for asymmetric flybackforward half bridge dc-dc converter to reduce the system loop gain's dependence on the input voltage, and improve the system's dynamic response at high input line. In Chapter 6, a unified pulse width modulation (PWM) scheme is proposed to extend the duty-cycle-shift (DCS) control, where PWM pattern is adaptively generated according to the input voltage level, such that the power converter's voltage stress are reduced and efficiency is improved. With the great flexibility of digital PWM modulation offered by the digital controller Si8250, the proposed control scheme is implemented and verified. Conclusion of the dissertation work and suggestions for future work in related directions are given in final Chapter.

This paper reveals a method for achieving maximum energy harvesting from such sources with fast determination of the optimal operating condition. An energy harvesting backpack, which captures energy from the interaction between the user and the spring decoupled load, is presented in this paper. The new control strategy, maximum energy harvesting control (MEHC), is developed and applied to the energy harvesting backpack system to evaluate the improvement of the MEHC over the basic maximum power point tracking algorithm.

As a result, low-voltage high-current high efficiency dc-dc converters with high power-density are demanded for state-of-the-art applications and also the future applications. Half-bridge dc-dc converter with current-doubler rectification is regarded as a good topology that is suitable for high-current low-voltage applications. There are three control schemes for half-bridge dc-dc converters and in order to provide a valid unified analog model for optimal compensator design, the analog state-space modeling and small signal modeling are studied in the dissertation and unified state-space and analog small signal model are derived. In addition, the digital control gains a lot of attentions due to its flexibility and re-programmability. In this dissertation, a unified digital small signal model for half-bridge dc-dc converter with current doubler rectifier is also developed and the digital compensator based on the derived model is implemented and verified by the experiments with the TI DSP chip. In addition, although current doubler rectifier is widely used in industry, the key issue is the current sharing between two inductors. The current imbalance is well studied and solved in non-isolated multi-phase buck converters, yet few discusse this issue in the current doubler rectification topology within academia and industry. This dissertation analyze the current sharing issue in comparison with multi-phase buck and one modified current doubler rectifier topology is proposed to achieve passive current sharing. The performance is evaluated with half bridge dc-dc converter; good current sharing is achieved without additional circuitry. Due to increasing demands for high-efficiency high-power-density low-voltage high current topologies for future applications, the thermal management is challenging. Since the secondary-side conduction loss dominates the overall power loss in low-voltage high-current isolated dc-dc converters, a novel current tripler rectification topology is proposed. Theoretical analysis, comparison and experimental results verify that the proposed rectification technique has good thermal management and well-distributed power dissipation, simplified magnetic design and low copper loss for inductors and transformer. That is due to the fact that the load current is better distributed in three inductors and the rms current in transformer windings is reduced. Another challenge in telecommunication and computing applications is fast transient response of the converter to the increasing slew-rate of load current change. For instance, from Intel's roadmap, it can be observed that the current slew rate of the age regulator has dramatically increased from 25A/uS in 1999 to 400A/us in 2005. One of the solutions to achieve fast transient response is secondary-side control technique to eliminate the delay of optocoupler to increase the system bandwidth. Active-clamp half bridge dc-dc converter with secondary-side control is presented and one industry standard 16th prototype is built and tested; good efficiency and transient response are shown in the experimental section. However, one key issue for implementation of secondary-side control is start-up. A new zero-voltage-switching buck-flyback isolated dc-dc converter with synchronous rectification is proposed, and it is only suitable for start-up circuit for secondary-side controlled converter, but also for house-keeping power supplies and standalone power supplies requiring multi-outputs.

To date, only a few single-stage topologies have made it to the market due to the inherit limitations in this structure. The high voltage and current stresses on the components led to reduced efficiency and an increased failure rate. In addition, the component prices tend to increase with increased electrical and thermal requirements, jeopardizing the overarching goal of price reduction. The absence of dedicated control circuitry for each stage complicates the power balance in these converters, often resulting in an oversized bus capacitance. These factors have impeded widespread acceptance of these new techniques by manufacturers, and as such single stage PFC has remained largely a drawing board concept. This dissertation will present an in-depth study of innovative solutions that address these problems directly, rather than proposing more topologies with the same type of issues. The direct energy transfer concept is analyzed and presented as a promising solution for the majority of the single-stage PFC converter limitations. Three topologies are presented and analyzed based on this innovative structure. To complete the picture, the dynamics of a variety of single-stage converters can be analyzed using a proposed switched transformer model.

This examination describes a novel technique for a small and highly efficient method of converting relatively high DC voltage to a very low voltage for use in the telecommunications industry. A modification to the standard Forward Resonant converter results in improvements in component stress, system efficiency, response time, and control circuitry. This examination describes background information needed to understand the concepts in DC to DC power systems, "soft-switching" topologies, and control methods for these systems. The examination introduces several topologies that are currently being used, and several types that have been previously analyzed, as a starting point for the detailed analysis of the proposed converter topology. A detailed analytical analysis is given of the proposed topology, including secondary effects, and component stresses. This analysis is compared to the results found from both Pspice simulation, and a working DC to DC converter. Finally, the topology is examined for potential improvements, and possible refinements to the model described.

These converters are capable of simultaneous and independent regulation of two out of their three ports, while the third port provides the power balance in the system. A dynamic model was developed for each topology to aid in testing and for designing the control loops. The models were then used to design the control structures, and the results were tested in Simulink. In addition, a basic outline of a system level architecture to control multiple converters working in parallel is presented. To improve the reliability of this system, output current sharing controls were also developed. Finally, one of the topologies is analyzed in detail in order to obtain a set of design equations that can be used to improve the efficiency, weight, and cost of the converter for a specific application.

The most popular hybrid vehicle, the hybrid electric vehicle, has many topologies developed to realize this hybrid vehicle. From these topologies, as sub set was created to define a particular group of vehicles where the converter discussed in this thesis has the most advantage. This sub set is defined by two electric sources of power coupled together at a common bus. This set up presents many unique operating conditions which can be handled seamlessly by the DC-to-DC converter when designed properly. The DC-to-DC converter discussed in this thesis is operated in Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM) of operation because of its unique advantages over the Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM) operated converter. The most relevant being the reduction of size of the magnetic components such as inductor, capacitor and transformers. However, the DC-to-DC converter operated in DCM does not have the inherent capability of bi-directional power flow. This problem can be overcome with a unique digital control technique developed here. The control is developed in a hierarchical fashion to separate the functions required for this sub set of hybrid electric vehicle topologies. This layered approach for the controller allows for the seamless integration of this converter into the vehicle. The first and lowest level of control includes a group of voltage and controller regulators. The average and small signal model of these controllers were developed here to be stable and have a relatively fast recovery time to handle the transient dynamics of the vehicle system. The second level of control commands and organizes the regulators from the first level of control to perform high level task that is more specific to the operation of the vehicle. This level of control is divided into three modes called hybrid boost, hybrid buck and electric vehicle mode. These modes are developed to handle the specific operating conditions found when the vehicle is operated in the specific mode. The third level of control is used to command the second level of control and is left opened via a communication area network (CAN) bus controller. This level of control is intended to come from the vehicle's system controller. Because the DC-to-DC converter is operated in DCM, this introduces added voltage ripple on the output voltage as well as higher current ripple demand from the input voltage. Since this is generally undesirable, the converter is split into three phases and properly interleaved. The interleaving operation is used to counteract the effects of the added voltage and current ripple. Finally, a level of protection is added to protect the converter and surrounding components from harm. All protection is designed and implemented digitally in DSP.

Since the debut of Intel 80X86 series, CPUs have greatly improved in performance with a dramatic increase on power consumption. According to the latest Intel VR11 design guidelines , the operational current may ramp up to 140A with typical voltages in the 1.1V to 1.4V range, while the slew rate of the transient current can be as high as 1.9A/ns [1, 2]. Meanwhile, the transient-response requirements are becoming stringer and stringer. This dissertation presents several topics on how to improve transient response for multi-phase voltage regulators. The Adaptive Modulation Control (AMC) is a type of non-linear control method which has proven to be effective in achieving high bandwidth designs as well as stabilizing the control loop during large load transients. It adaptively adjusts control bandwidth by changing the modulation gain, depending on different load conditions. With the AMC, a multiphase voltage regulator can be designed with an aggressively high bandwidth. When in heavy load transients where the loop could be potentially unstable, the bandwidth is lowered. Therefore, the AMC provides an optimal means for robust high-bandwidth design with excellent transient performance. The Error Amplifier Voltage Positioning (EAVP) is proposed to improve transient response by removing undesired spikes and dips after initial transient response. The EAVP works only in a short period of time during transient events without modifying the power stage and changing the control loop gain. It facilitates the error amplifier voltage recovering during transient events, achieving a fast settling time without impact on the whole control loop. Coupled inductors are an emerging topology for computing power supplies as VRs with coupled inductors show dynamic and steady-state advantages over traditional VRs. This dissertation first covers the coupling mechanism in terms of both electrical and reluctance modeling. Since the magnetizing inductance plays an important role in the coupled-inductor operation, a unified State-Space Averaging model is then built for a two-phase coupled-inductor voltage regulator. The DC solutions of the phase currents are derived in order to show the impact of the magnetizing inductance on phase current balancing. A small signal model is obtained based on the state-space-averaging model. The effects of magnetizing inductance on dynamic performance are presented. The limitations of conventional DCR current-sensing for coupled inductors are addressed. Traditional inductor DCR current sensing topology and prior arts fail to extract phase currents for coupled inductors. Two new DCR current sensing topologies for coupled inductors are presented in this dissertation. By implementation of simple RC networks, the proposed topologies can preserve the coupling effect between phases. As a result, accurate phase inductor currents and total current can be sensed, resulting in excellent current and voltage regulation. While coupled-inductor topologies are showing advantages in transient response and are becoming industry practices, they are suffering from low steady-state operating efficiency. Motivated by the challenging transient and efficiency requirements, this dissertation proposes a Full Bridge Coupled Inductor (FBCI) scheme which is able to improve transient response as well as savor high efficiency at (a) steady state. The FBCI can change the circuit configuration under different operational conditions. Its "flexible" topology is able to optimize both transient response and steady-state efficiency. The flexible core configuration makes implementation easy and clear of IP issues. A novel design methodology for planar magnetics based on numerical analysis of electromagnetic fields is offered and successfully applied to the design of low-voltage high power density dc-dc converters. The design methodology features intense use of FEM simulation. The design issues of planar magnetics, including loss mechanism in copper and core, winding design on PCB, core selections, winding arrangements and so on are first reviewed. After that, FEM simulators are introduced to numerically compute the core loss and winding loss. Consequently, a software platform for magnetics design is established, and optimized magnetics can then be achieved. Dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) technology is a common industry practice in optimizing power consumption of microprocessors by dynamically altering the supply voltage under different operational modes, while maintaining the performance requirements. During DVS operation, it is desirable to position the output voltage to a new level commanded by the microprocessor (CPU) with minimum delay. However, voltage deviation and slow settling time usually exist due to large output capacitance and compensation delay in voltage regulators. Although optimal DVS can be achieved by modifying the output capacitance and compensation, this method is limited by constraints from stringent static and dynamic requirements. In this dissertation, the effects of output capacitance and compensation network on DVS operation are discussed in detail. An active compensator scheme is then proposed to ensure smooth transition of the output voltage without change of power stage and compensation during DVS. Simulation and experimental results are included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

A variety of techniques for DC-DC converter performance improvement are presented in this work. Focusing on the efficiency issue, a variety of clamping techniques including both active and passive methods are presented after the ringing issues in DC-DC converters are investigated. By presenting the clamping techniques, a big variety of energy management concepts are introduced. The active bridge-capacitor tank clamping and FET-diode-capacitor tank clamping are close ideas, which transfer the leakage inductor energy to clamping capacitor to prevent oscillation between leakage inductor and junction capacitor of MOSFETs. The two-FET-clamping tank employs two MOSFETs to freewheeling the leakage current when the main MOSFETs of the half-bridge are both off. Driving voltage variation on the secondary side Synchronous Rectifier (SR) MOSFETs in self-driven circuit due to input voltage variation in bus converter applications is also investigated. One solution with a variety of derivations is proposed using zerner-capacitor combination to clamping the voltage while maintaining reasonable power losses. Another efficiency improvement idea comes from phase-shift concept in DC-DC converters. By employing phase-shift scheme, the primary side and the secondary side two MOSFETs have complementary driving signals respectively, which allow the MOSFET to be turned on with Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS). Simulation verified the feasibility of the proposed phase-shifted DC-DC converter. From the control scheme point of view, a novel peak current mode control concept for half-bridge topologies is presented. Aiming at compensating the imbalanced voltage due to peak current mode control in symmetric half-bridge topologies, an additional voltage compensation loop is used to bring the half-bridge capacitor voltage back to balance. In the proposed solutions, one scheme is applied on symmetric half-bridge topology and the other one is applied on Duty-cycle-shifted (DCS) half-bridge topology. Both schemes employ simple circuitry and are suitable for integration. Loop stability issues are also investigated in this work. Modeling work shows the uncompensated half-bridge topology cannot be stabilized under all conditions and the additional compensation loop helps to prevent the voltage imbalance effectively.
