Show moreRecent research that indicates ten universal values are shared across cultures has developed into the Schwartz Value Systems Theory. This theory describes the ten basic human values that derive from different motivational forces such as social superiority, an inner desire in novelty, and loyalty to one's group. The values and corresponding motivational forces guide an individual's decisions. After the Schwartz Value Systems Theory had been developed, two surveys have been created in order to assess an individual's value hierarchy. While both of these surveys accurately measure an adult's values, further research has indicated children possess individual values similarly to adults. As a result, the Picture Based Values Survey for Children was created in order to consider children's values. The results from the children who took the Picture Based Values Survey For Children revealed that those children as a group acquired the same value hierarchy as adults. Since motivational forces determine an individual's values, it would seem predictable that values might have an effect on a student's level of motivation to succeed in the classroom. When a student's motivational goals are met in the classroom, then they will become engaged in the lesson by aligning students' values to the teaching methods incorporated in the lesson. This thesis therefore integrates prior research on children's value development, the effects these values have on society and the classroom, and ways to exhibit values through discourse and teaching methods. Further, this seeks to apply this research in late childhood and early adolescence classrooms by examining the effects that may result from teachers exhibiting each of the ten universal values through their teaching methods through publicly shared videos.

Show moreStrong educators always look for different ways to excite and enthrall their students in the curriculum. The field of science education often loses student interest due to the complexities and vocabulary found in the scientific realm. Incorporating music into the classroom has shown positive results as a way to integrate student learning and a different way of facilitating students in the learning process (Brewer, 1992; Davies, 200). Resources for implementing the integration of music and science exist throughout the Internet in a variety of mediums. This study looks at the availability of said resources and the concepts they cover, for what students they are intended for, how are they intended to be used and the level of accuracy they maintain. Those resources upholding the accuracy desired for use in the classroom were then compiled onto one webpage for use by elementary science educators. The webpage is open and free to the public and may be shared.

Show moreThe focus of this qualitative, descriptive case study was to (a) investigate the knowledge English Language Arts preservice and inservice teachers had about eTextbooks and Open Educational Resources (OERs) and (b) how they planned to use that knowledge to develop their current/future 6-12 grade students' comprehension and content knowledge. Included within the study were specifics regarding how eTextbooks and OERs can be used to support adolescent learners and how online comprehension skills can be developed. Data were analyzed in order to determine themes related to the use and planning for eTextbooks and OERs in the secondary ELA classroom. Data sources for this study included the participant interviews, document analysis, and a focus group interview. Findings revealed that participants (N=6) were both excited and apprehensive about using technology and that although they had some personal experiences with eTextbooks and OERs, they would need more specific support in helping their future or current students to develop online reading comprehension skills. Implications and recommendations are offered for preservice teacher educators, classroom teachers and professional developers, researchers, and publishers.

Show moreReelin is a large, extracellular glycoprotein that binds to several membrane receptors on neural stem cells (HNSCs), neural progenitor cells (NPCs), and neuroblasts of mammals to direct their migration. Previously, our lab established the presence of Reelin increased migration of wild-type fetal-derived HNSC's, both in vitro and in vivo. In addition, we demonstrated that Reelin protein treatment also increases the formation of radial glia via Notch-1 signaling, in vitro. Radial glia are precursors to NPCs, as well as a scaffold for neuroblast migration during cortical lamination. Reelin has long been associated with Schizophrenia (SZ). Because post-mortem brains are limited to describing the end-point of the disease, heterozygous haplodeficient Reelin knock-out (Reeler) mice are used to model developmental aspects of SZ in vivo. However, SZ is a complex, polyfactoral disease with a myriad of dysfunctional pathways that may have unforeseen effects on Reelin signaling. K. Brennand et al. (2014) reported low Reelin mRNA expression and cellular characteristics mirroring the Reeler mouse in induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell-derived NPCs and neurons from living SZ patients. Building upon this and our work with stem cells, here we consider Reelin's effects on migration of Reelin-deficient iPS cell-derived NPCs. Reelin treatment of consists of secreted Reelin from transfected human embryonic kidney 293 cells (HEK 293) with the pCRL RELN gene-containing plasmid created by G. D'Arcangelo (1997) and given to us by T. Curran. Using the metric of cellular migration, this is the first time it have been shown that SZ iNPCs are capable of receiving and reacting to extracellular Reelin. Due to our validation of this model, further work using iPS cell-derived neural cells can confidently be used for future disease modeling and drug discovery of Reelin-deficient SZ.
