One variable that can be expected to affect perception is the viewer's prior knowledge of the film. This study deals with one specific variable - a published review. Another variable that might affect perception is personality. This study deals with one identified personality type - authoritarian. The message film is the award-winning, five-minute, color, anti-war film, Star Spangled Banner. It was produced and directed by Roger Flint and was released in 1972. The sections that follow examine a variety of previous research findings, develop the theoretical concepts, report the method of study, and analyze the findings.

Various hypotheses for this fact are reviewed and the hypothesis that females accepting the feminine role will be more likely to become depressed during their middle years than a more androgenous woman is submitted. To support this hypothesis a study was designed utilizing a Clinical group consisting of females, 35 to 50 experiencing depression and undergoing treatment for depression at one of three mental health centers and a Non-clinical group consisting of women, same age group, not experiencing depression and who had never undergone treatment for depression. Each subject was asked to complete a questionnaire to measure depression and femininity. Results of this study support the hypothesis that depression in middle-aged females is related to the degree of their acceptance of the traditional feminine role. Depression as defined and measured by Beck's Depression Inventory was positively correlated with femininity as measured by Bern's Sex-Role Inventory. The Pearson correlation coefficient for these two measures was .62 (p<.001), indicating that 38% of the variance in depression scores can be accounted for by the sex-role variable.

Show moreFlorida Technological University College of Social Sciences Thesis; Understanding the processes of communication during mixed-motive bargaining in coalition depends to a great extent upon comprehension of the variables which affect it. Certainly one of the most important variables of such communication is the influence of personality effect upon the bargaining outcomes One personality variable, Machiavellianism, is strongly related to manipulative behavior. This thesis examines both the effects of Machiavellianism on bargaining success in face-to-face triads, and explores the limits of those effects relative to task orientation and personality type disclosure. It was found that Machiavellians are more able bargainers only so long as the nature and identity of their personality type is not revealed to their opponents. Machiavellian bargaining tactics, power strategies, styles of communication, and a variety of factors related to bargaining success are analyzed and a theory of ordering these results in terms of conflict resolution is discussed.

Show moreUniversity of Central Florida College of Social Sciences Thesis; Ten college students serving as volunteer subjects were randomly assigned to one of two groups . One group received EMG biofeedback training using feedback from the frontalis muscle only , and the other group received EMG biofeedback training using feedback from several muscle sites. It was hypothesized that subjects who were given EMG biofeedback relaxation training sequentially from several muscle sites would be able to lower EMG levels at these sites to a significantly greater degree than subjects who received EMG biofeedback relaxation training using feedback from the frontalis muscle only. Both groups were given a pre-training baseline session, nine training sessions , and a post-training baseline session . Comparing the mean pre- training and post- training baseline EMG levels of each group at each muscle site using t -tests showed that there was no significant reduction of EMG muscle activity at any monitored muscle site due to either frontalis feedback training only or multiple muscle feedback training . This failure to obtain significant training effects may have resulted from using college students as subjects since they were not trying to relieve a stress related disorder and they exhibited low initial baseline EMG levels. It is suggested that future research on the generalization of EMG biofeedback training be done using a clinical population having elevated EMG levels.

Show moreFlorida Technological University College of Social Sciences Thesis; An individual suffering from a hearing impairment has at least partially lost the ability to communicate, depending upon the degree of hearing impairment. In normal oral communication the articulators, the tongue, lips, palate, and teeth, serve as modulators of the air stream. The resulting output takes form as consonants and vowels which are detected by the ear of a listener and passed on for interpretation in the higher brain centers. For the individuals with moderate to severe hearing loss, the visual shape and movement of the speaker's articulators become the important communicative elements (O'Neill and Oyer, 1961). Hearing impaired children often depend on visual perception in the communication process to a greater extent than do hearing children, due to decreased auditory sensitivity (Harris, 1971; Oyer and Frankman, 1975). Speechreading is the process through which an individual, regardless of the state of his hearing understands speech by carefully watching the speaker (Silverman, 1948). Professional individuals Involved in aural rehabilitation prefer to use the term speechreading while the public uses the term lipreading more frequently (Berger, 1972). In speechreading there are several variables, one of which is facial exposure of the speaker (Stone, 1957). The speechreading ability related to facial exposure is a variable to be considered in this study.

The job of the manager is composed of a multitude of skills and this tends to make evaluation or prediction of job performance more difficult (Odiorne and Miller. 1966). The consequences of poor selection decisions in management positions roay be costly for a company in increased turnover, reduced productivity or effectiveness, or in poor management decisions. One approach to the problem of management selection is the use of simulations of on-the-job situations. Exercises can be developed to provide a sample of typical work situations and candidates for selection can demonstrate the skills that they possess by attempting to deal with the problems presented by the simulated work situations. Simulations allow us to look at an individual's performance in a lifelike situation without placing the individual on the job and the resultant consequences for the company if the man fails to perform well. It is the purpose of this study to look at one type of simulation exercise, the in-basket technique (Frederiksen, 1962), and how performance on this type of exercise is affected if individuals. Prior to taking the exercise, are coached on its content by other individuals that have already completed the exercise.

Locus is further defined and related concepts discussed. Literature is reviewed, exploring determinants in the development of personal locus. Differential descriptions of the Internal and External individual are outlined, according to studies on locus as it affects personality and social-interactions. Delinquent, socially maladjusted and dependent-neglected adolescents were tested and significant differences in locus and personality characteristics examined. Final discussion is directed to implications of the results of this study with regards to the needs of the children and the suggested role of the institution.

Show moreFlorida Technological University College of Social Sciences Thesis; Twenty seven undergraduate psychology students were randomly assigned to two treatment groups and one no treatment control group to assess the effects of Coverant Control Therapy (CCT) under 2 different conditions on depression. The research was an analogue study. The first treatment group received CCT in a didactic format, while the second treatment froup received CCT in an encounter group format. The control group assembled jigsaw puzzles. All subjects were administered the Multiple Affective Adjective Check List (MAACL) and the Innesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory "D" scale for pre-, post-, and followup testing. Groups met for 4 sessions. Separate one-way analyses of variance were perfomred on pre-, post-, and followup scores on both measures. One significance was obtained in post-test MAACL scores. A Least Squares Difference post hoc analysis indicated that CCT in conjunction with a warm therapeutic relationship was more effective than either CCT delivered without the therapeutic relationship or a no treatment control group. It was concluded that CCT with the "relationship" condition is effective in elevating mood for a college population. Additional research was recommended to assess aptimal length of treatment, and to improve generalization of results.

Show moreFlorida Technological University College of Social Sciences Thesis; A variable that is capable of indicating one's cognitive and motor capaciteis has been the dream of many researchers. Until recently however, no researcher has seriously considered an independent variable that is obious among all people regardless of race or culture. This variable is eye color. This paper is a review of the experimental literature in this field and covers many areas including sociability, perception, learning, athletic abilities, and a few medical anomalies. Several alternative hypotheses are also offered as reasons for the obtained correlations. These ideas include culture, learning, and environment. Two other hypotheses are also presented to explain why eye color does play an important role in determining one's response to environmental stimuli. These ideas include a genetic and physiological basis. It is the hope of this author that this review may stimulate other researchers to perform more experiments in the area to help determine the amount of influence that they eye color has in individual responses to the environment.
