Specifically, we sought to determine whether analysis of vowel length of stressed and unstressed syllables is helpful in differentiating between individuals with AOS and aphasia versus aphasia alone. Significant differences support the hypothesis that PVI, analyzed from vowel length, is uniquely affected in AOS. This yields reason for further research in prosodic deficits in differential diagnosis, as well as application of this theory for a speech-language pathologist.

In order to provide accurate responses to PROMs, PWAs must to read, comprehend, formulate and generate answersto a variety of questions. PROMs designed for other clinical populations assessed/treated by speech-language pathologists have been found to be largely unreadable. Despite the significant role of PROMs in assessment and management of aphasia, no study to date has examined the readability of these measures. Four readability formulae were applied to identified PROMs for PWAs. These formulae estimate readability in terms of reading grade level and provide additional, quantitative information regarding textual elements such as syllable, word, and sentence length, complexity, and frequency. Fourteen PROMs were identified, per review of extant literature. A Macintosh-based readability software program was used to perform readability analyses. Additional metrics of clinical utility were applied to the selected measures via the Clinical Utility Scale. Results indicate that, on average, PROMs designed for PWAs are written at an eighth-grade reading level which is discordant with fourth-to-sixth reading gradelevel recommendations set forth by health literacy experts. Scores derived from the Clinical Utility Scale highlight the disconnect among measures that are easy to implement but are unreadable. Further analysis indicates that syllable-, word-, and sentence-level complexities can also impact the difficulty of analyzed texts. Results of the present study are consistent with prior PROM analyses performed across a variety of clinical populations assessed/treated by speech-language pathologists. Clinical implications and limitations of the present study are discussed as well as directions for further research.

Comparisons were made to investigate group and genre differences. Standardized assessment scores of cognitive and linguistic evaluations were collected and correlated to features of macrolinguistic discourse analysis.Participants with acquired communication disorders performed best on the story retell discourse task compared to single picture description and sequential picture description. Significant measures for story retell task include lexical efficiency, time efficiency, and Main Concept score. No significant difference was found on performance between single-picture description task and sequential picture description for participants with acquired communication disorders. The Main Concept Analysis presented with the strongest correlation to macrolinguistic features of analysis. These preliminary findings suggest that main concept score is a predominant indicator of the overall informativeness and macrostructure of a speaker's discourse.

According to the extant literature, there is less agreement on psychosocial domains between proxy-caregivers and IWAs. In addition, high levels of mutuality have been strongly associated with low levels of stress in stroke survivors; however, these studies are not been specific to IWAs. The proposed study sought to examine the degree of agreement between proxy-caregiver reports and IWAs' perceived stress using a modified stress scale specifically for IWAs. This study also examined the relationship between perceived stress and mutuality of the relationship between the caregiver and IWAs. The modified Perceived Stress Scale (mPSS), a proxy version of the mPSS, and the Mutuality Scale (MS) were administered to 12 dyads. An independent sample t-test was conducted to determine if there were significant differences in perceived stress and mutuality as reported by the caregiver, proxy-caregiver and IWA. A Pearson correlation was performed to determine the level of agreement across questionnaires. Results show a moderate correlation on mPSS ratings between the proxy-caregiver and IWA. On average, proxy ratings on the mPSS were significantly higher than reports from IWAs. There was strong agreement on mutuality among the dyads and a moderate correlation between mutuality agreement and proxy agreement. Finally, there was a moderate correlation between the caregiver's mPSS score and increased disagreement between the proxy-caregiver and the IWA's mPSS score. These findings suggest a moderate agreement on perceived stress among caregivers and IWAs. Differences in agreement on perceived stress for proxy-caregiver and IWAs were minimized when perceived mutuality between the dyads were high. Further, caregivers were more likely to overestimate the perceived stress of IWAs when their own mPSS ratings were high. Study limitations and future directions are also discussed.
