Show moreThe aim is to understand if the implementation plan in place by the public school system is exceeding the expectations of the stakeholders or if it is falling below what is expected. This quantitative research examines the English Language Arts (ELA), Florida Standard Assessment (FSA) scores for the state of Florida with a closer inspection of Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) with relation to their digital implementation plan. With an increase in digital technology and amplified emphasis on technology-based learning, the objective of this research was to determine what impact students and schools are experiencing in regards to test scores after the first year of implementation. Data reflects a decrease in gains in relation to ELA test scores, specifically within the year of implementation of technology. With the knowledge of this information the conversation needs to be started about what needs to be done to help this from becoming a permanent issue. There needs to be an allotment for adjustments to allow for the inclusion of strategies to assist in the minimizing of the achievement gap.

Show moreUniversity of Central Florida College of Engineering Thesis; When a filter transfer function in s is replaced with the bilinear transform in z, t he resulting discrete model represents the original continuous model within a second order accuracy of integration. A unique set of recently discovered minimum memory algorithms that perform the bilinear transform on a continuous transfer function are implemented on an INTEL 8080 microprocessor system. Scal1ng techniques are used to frequency scale all transfer functions to a standardized frequency. All data words are represented in a signed binary double precision format to maintain higher calculation speed and accuracy. Three test case transfer functions of different order are implemented using the bilinear transform algorithms. First, the algorithms are used to generate the three discrete models. Second, the continuous time models are driven by a step input function, generating a continuous time output. Third, the step function input is discretized and used to drive the bilinear algorithm derived models. Finally, the discrete outputs are compared with the continuous time outputs to validate and evaluate the software techniques used to implement the bilinear algorithms, which imply that the techniques provide a basis for new hardware designs.

Show moreThis Digital/Public History visualization thesis project explores how three factors(-)Atlantic migration patterns, demographics, and socioeconomic systems(-)influenced the development of folk music in the southern United States from the 18th century through the 20th century. A large body of written scholarship exists addressing plantation economies, the slave trade, and folk music. Digital technology, however, creates new opportunities for analyzing the geo-temporal aspects contained within the numerous archival resources such as census and migration records, field recordings, economic data, diaries, and other personal records. The written portion of the thesis addresses the historiography, research findings, and the process of creating the visualization product. The digital component employs open-source archives and MapScholar, a visualization tool developed at the University of Virginia, to reveal the spatial dimensions of three distinct regions(-)The greater Chesapeake (Virginia/North Carolina/), the coastal lowlands and sea islands of the Gullah Corridor (Charleston/Savannah), and Louisiana (New Orleans). The end result is an educational and potential research tool that affords viewers a more dynamic perspective on the relationship between agricultural slave labor, migration patterns, and folk music than is possible with text alone.

However, the information necessary to complete this thesis only goes back to that year. Since the year 2000, the newspaper industry has struggled to adapt to the age of ever-changing technology. Newspapers across the US, including large and well-established publications have been forced to find new strategies that allow them to keep up with new digital technologies. The New York Times was the focus of this study, but it is only one part of a very large industry. However, it is one of the most successful papers of the digital age and offers a thorough look into the newspaper industry. Therefore, its strategies to adapt to digital and its overall business model were compared to newspapers throughout the nation. The intent of this thesis is to have a better understanding of the future of the newspaper industry in the digital age, including newspapers in small, medium and large markets. A look into The New York Times' history provides a better understanding of how newspapers have already been affected by the digital age, and its business model offers guidance for other newspapers on how to adapt. This thesis focused on analyzing at least one newspaper to represent each market including a small, medium and large market newspaper then determining if the methods The New York Times uses would be adaptable and scalable to their newspapers. This thesis determines which newspapers could use The New York Times' strategies to their benefit and draws conclusions on the future of the newspaper industry as a whole.

Show moreThe evolution of social media platforms and other public forums in the digital realm has created an explosion of user-generated content and data as a component of the already content-saturated digital landscape. The distributed, horizontal nature of the internet as a platform makes it difficult to ascertain value and differentiate between texts of varying validity, bias, and purpose. In addition, the internet is not an inanimate interface. As Pariser (2011) argues, content aggregators, such as Google, actively filter, personalize, and therefore limit each individual's access to information, in both range and type. This has created a crisis of information valuation and control. Importantly, conventional curriculum does not furnish students with the information literacy tools necessary for them to navigate the digital landscape effectively. Information miners and developers, including news organizations, are falling victim to this fallacy as well. Lankshear and Knobel (2011) posit that empowering navigation and control in the digital landscape requires a new mindset. This research offers a context-driven approach that acknowledges this new mindset, promoting "rhetorical consciousness" (Murphy et al., 2003) within the network and providing a framework to recognize, challenge, and co-create gatekeeping roles and mechanism as they increasingly shift to the individual.

The information within can be lost as grave-markers are damaged either by natural causes or human interaction. In larger cemeteries preserving these significant places can sometimes be difficult due to a number of different factors. Therefore focusing preservation efforts on specific locations where damage is more likely to occur is crucial to ensure that the monuments that are the most at risk are preserved. One possible way of accomplishing this is through the utilization of a geographic information system (GIS) to determine the shortest distance path an individual may take to reach a specific grave-marker. This can be accomplished by conducting a near analysis between an origin point and every grave-marker. These paths would also show each grave-marker that an individual passes indicating the potential for purposeful or accidental interaction. With this information efforts such as photogrammetry can be applied effectively for digital heritage preservation. Such methods would permit individuals to manipulate three-dimensional representations of grave-markers in order to preserve a large portion of the information it contains.

Show moreThis dissertation focuses on the role that College Composition courses can and should play in addressing the digital divide and the literacy divide. For this project, digital divide refers to the space between those students who have opportunity to participate in online discourse communities and to contribute to the collective intelligence described by Henry Jenkins and those who have not had this opportunity even though they do have access to current technology. The literacy divide discussed is created when literacy is defined simply as the ability to read and write. Students need to be visually, digitally, and technologically literate.In response to these gaps, I propose reimagining the first-year writing course as a course in storytelling across disciplines and media. Story, oral storytelling, digital narrative, and transmedia narrative are explained. An analysis of several stories including a canonical comic book, a commercial, and a long-term narrative television show are analyzed using Aristotle, Propp, Saussure, Jenkins, Birkerts, and other theorists important to work in Texts and Technology. The guiding question for this project is How can a focus on storytelling using new and digital media in the first-year English composition course create an authentic and relevant learning experience for contemporary students while bridging the digital divide created by the lack of opportunity to participate in the collective intelligence of the convergence culture?Finally, the dissertation includes a research protocol which describes and justifies future research to test the claims made in this dissertation.

Show moreMedia is a constant feature in our modern lives, transforming and influencing society and culture. This study examined how increased participation in digital media has changed the nature of religious representation, culture, and practice. Data was collected from both secular websites and religious media spaces where people post information about religion. This discussion is a necessary step in determining how media has not only become embedded in religious culture but has influenced the transformation of American religious culture.The first part of this analysis concentrated on uncovering rhetorical strategies in religious digital spaces. I assumed that organizational identification would be a common approach used on the Mormon.org member profiles. The data collected verified this assumption. The second part of this analysis compared collaboratively produced articles in wiki-spaces that described Roman Catholicism and Mormonism. The goal of this part of the analysis was to determine how faith organizations are represented in digital spaces that are situated outside church authority.

Show moreTraumatic, cataclysmic events, whether caused by man-made or natural forces, threaten the safety, stability, and resilience of a community or state. Additionally, massive media exposure given to documenting and providing information, place the media consumers at psychological risk. As an alternative to broadcast news reports, online memorials and disaster archives provide the public the means and central locations for witnessing catastrophic events, as well as collectively commemorating and mourning the tragic losses. According to psychological and ethnographic research, narrativizing the trauma through shared memories and artifacts of mourning produce multiple therapeutic benefits, including the likely development of cognitive awareness, empathy, and catharsis.Complicating these benefits, however, are psychological risks of secondary trauma resulting from archiving and curating disaster collections, and the potential for economic and political exploitation. The participatory disaster archives are embedded in trauma culture, serving as public witnesses to survivors of trauma and reinforcing the medical, social, and civic infrastructures associated with a community's recovery from and resilience to calamities. Ironically, the confluence of public archive/memorials with medical and other socio-technical institutions that facilitate recovery from crises, also contribute to trauma culture's sustenance. This dissertation investigates the effects of digitally archiving and memorializing traumatic events through an interdisciplinary methodology of critical cultural studies and ethnography. I argue that participatory disaster archives may both mitigate psychological risks and augment social benefits through adopting protocols of best practice.

Show moreThis study examines six activist websites in terms of genre and persona to identify electronic-text conventions and forms that must be recognizable to site visitors in order for digital activists to effectively communicate. Activist websites already use a number of text forms and visual rhetorical elements to cue the site visitor; many of these text forms are common to the activist websites examined for this thesis and may constitute an identifiable and distinct genre.In terms of persona, this study examines the electronic "public self" of activist websites. The arena becomes a metaphor for the virtual world; the rhetors are the activist sites; and the digital discourse is the intertextual debate--the conversation--that occurs among website users, activist sites, and targets. By categorizing activist sites in terms of their primary activities (helping, protest, and revolutionary), we determine which elements of genre repeat according to categories and we ultimately gauge the intensity and type of the outcome that the website rhetor hopes to create in the user. Designers and owners of activist sites have goals which can only be reached by means of effective, well-considered, digital genre and persona.Because many technical communicators and students of technical communication first experience the profession through service-learning for a nongovernmental organization--often an activist organization--this study will help those technical communicators to reconsider their own assumptions about genre and persona and may lead those students to understand the importance of privileging genre and persona when designing and redesigning digital texts. This study provides both experienced and new technical communicators a framework that they can apply to documents in order to (1) cue site visitors to the meaning of electronic texts and (2) construct effective public personas in the digital forum.

Show moreThis project reports on the results of a study that investigated the social networking use of student and non-student veterans, with a particular focus on the narrative building and identity presentation practices involved in this use. In this dissertation, I argue that stereotypical and exclusionary tropes of the veteran, such as the veteran as war hero and the veteran as wounded warrior, are damaging to our veterans and to others, in both the society and the classroom. However, through the detailed analysis of survey data and data collected from an interview and social networking profile tour with one student veteran participant, I highlight the exclusionary nature of these tropes and argue that the complex digital narratives crafted in social networking spaces can offer resistance to popular tropes of the veteran. The complexity of my participants' digital narratives also offers support for the argument that elements of one's social networking profiles, when viewed independently and decontextualized, can lead to invalid and unfair assumptions about the users' identity. Additionally, I argue that, for my participants, many of whom demonstrated a nuanced and critical understanding of audience, decisions to self-identify as military personnel in social networking spaces are intertwined with perceptions of privacy. Finally, this project culminates in the identification of a number of digital literacy practices present in my participants' social networking use, as well as a set of pedagogical and programmatic recommendations for writing teachers and writing program administrators interested in aiding student veterans in the process of transition and reintegration.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to determine the readiness of an administrative team (N = 7) to provide digital instructional leadership, in the context of one high school, as well as examine possible outcomes related to student achievement, as measured by Florida Standards Assessment English Language Arts scale scores (FSA, 2018). This instrumental case study design (Fraenkel, Wallen, (&) Hyun, 2015) incorporated mixed-methods data collection and qualitative analysis. Data were collected from three distinct sources for triangulation: qualitative semi-structured interviews, Digital Instructional Leadership Readiness Instrument [DILRI(&)copy;] (Taylor (&) Shepherd, 2016) knowledge and confidence construct participant item selections, and Grade 9 and Grade 10 Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) English Language Arts 2018 student scale scores (FSA, 2018). Administrator perceptions of teachers' integration of technology in instruction were examined via constructs of (a) characteristics of learning and (b) levels of technology integration contained within the Technology Integration Matrix [TIM(&)copy;] (FCIT, 2018) framework. Findings support administrators' ability to recognize emergent levels of teachers' integration of technology in instruction. Findings also inform professional learning experiences for administrators supporting teachers in one-to-one digital school environments. Implications for practice include a need for sustained ongoing professional learning for administrators on the selected technology integration framework. School district administrators may seek to ensure that the selected technology integration framework, the TIM(&)copy; (FCIT, 2018) in this instrumental case study (Fraenkel et al., 2015), is presented as a sustained shared vision (Richardson (&) Sterrett) for both instructional and administrative personnel within the organization. Recommendations for future research include collecting similar data from multiple schools within a school district and from numerous school districts. Replication of this study is suggested in various regions of the United States. Also, a longitudinal follow-up study is suggested to examine change in administrator digital instructional leadership over time.

With the speed improvement and cost reduction of digital control, digital controller is becoming a trend for DC-DC converters in addition to existed digital monitoring and management technology. In this thesis, digital control is investigated for DC-DC converters applications. To deeply understand the whole control systems, DC-DC converter models are investigated based on averaged state-space modeling. Considering half-bridge isolated DC-DC converter with a current doublers rectifier has advantages over other topologies especially in the application of low-voltage and high-current DC-DC converters, the thesis take it as an example for digital control modeling and implementation. In Chapter 2, unified steady-state DC models and small-signal models are developed for both symmetric and asymmetric controlled half-bridge DC-DC converters. Based on the models, digital controller design is implemented. In Chapter 3, digital modeling platforms are established based on Matlab, Digital PID design and corresponding simulation results are provided. Also some critical issues and practical requirements are discussed. In Chapter 4, a DSP-based digital controller is implemented with the TI's DSP chip TMS320F2812. Related implementation methods and technologies are discussed. Finally the experimental results of a DSP-based close-loop of HB converter are provided and analyzed in Chapter 5, and thesis conclusions are given in Chapter 6.

Show moreWith the recent revival of the hybrid vehicle much advancement in power management has been made. The most popular hybrid vehicle, the hybrid electric vehicle, has many topologies developed to realize this hybrid vehicle. From these topologies, as sub set was created to define a particular group of vehicles where the converter discussed in this thesis has the most advantage. This sub set is defined by two electric sources of power coupled together at a common bus. This set up presents many unique operating conditions which can be handled seamlessly by the DC-to-DC converter when designed properly. The DC-to-DC converter discussed in this thesis is operated in Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM) of operation because of its unique advantages over the Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM) operated converter. The most relevant being the reduction of size of the magnetic components such as inductor, capacitor and transformers. However, the DC-to-DC converter operated in DCM does not have the inherent capability of bi-directional power flow. This problem can be overcome with a unique digital control technique developed here. The control is developed in a hierarchical fashion to separate the functions required for this sub set of hybrid electric vehicle topologies. This layered approach for the controller allows for the seamless integration of this converter into the vehicle. The first and lowest level of control includes a group of voltage and controller regulators. The average and small signal model of these controllers were developed here to be stable and have a relatively fast recovery time to handle the transient dynamics of the vehicle system. The second level of control commands and organizes the regulators from the first level of control to perform high level task that is more specific to the operation of the vehicle. This level of control is divided into three modes called hybrid boost, hybrid buck and electric vehicle mode. These modes are developed to handle the specific operating conditions found when the vehicle is operated in the specific mode. The third level of control is used to command the second level of control and is left opened via a communication area network (CAN) bus controller. This level of control is intended to come from the vehicle's system controller. Because the DC-to-DC converter is operated in DCM, this introduces added voltage ripple on the output voltage as well as higher current ripple demand from the input voltage. Since this is generally undesirable, the converter is split into three phases and properly interleaved. The interleaving operation is used to counteract the effects of the added voltage and current ripple. Finally, a level of protection is added to protect the converter and surrounding components from harm. All protection is designed and implemented digitally in DSP.

Multiplier is one of the most commonly used circuits in the digital devices. There are various types of multipliers available depending upon the application in which they are used. In the present thesis report, the importance of power dissipation in today's digital technology is discussed and the various types and sources of power dissipation have been elaborated. Different types of multipliers have been designed which vary in their structure and amount of power dissipation. The concept of pipelining is explained and the reduction in the power dissipation of the multipliers after pipelining is experimentally determined. Clock gating is a very important technique used in the design of digital circuits to reduce power dissipation. Various types of clock gating techniques have been presented as a case study. The technology used in the simulation of these circuits is 0.35µm CMOS and the simulator used is SPECTRE S.

Show moreThe subject of my dissertation is how phenomenology can be used as a tool for understanding the intersection between texts and technology. What I am suggesting here is that, specifically in connection with the focus of our program in Texts and Technology, there are very significant questions concerning how digital communications technology extends our humanity, and more importantly what kind of epistemological and ontological questions are raised because of this. There needs to be a coherent theory for Texts and Technology that will help us to understand this shift, and I feel that this should be the main focus for the program itself. In this dissertation I present an analysis of the different phenomenological aspects of the study of Texts and Technology. For phenomenologists such as Husserl, Heidegger, and Merleau-Ponty, technology, in all of its forms, is the way in which human consciousness is embodied. Through the creation and manipulation of technology, humanity extends itself into the physical world. Therefore, I feel we must try to understand this extension as more than merely a reflection of materialist practices, because first and foremost we are discussing how the human mind uses technology to further its advancement. I will detail some of the theoretical arguments both for and against the study of technology as a function of human consciousness. I will focus on certain issues, such as problems of archiving and copyright, as central to the field. I will further argue how from a phenomenological standpoint we are in the presence of a phenomenological shift from the primacy of print towards a more hybrid system of representing human communications.

The purpose of The Resonance and Residue of the First African American Newspaper: How Freedom's Journal Created Space in the Early 19th Century is to provide an interdisciplinary approach to historical newspapers that illustrates an alternative history in this country (-) a history of and by African Americans. By combining both print and digital research methods, new historical, rhetorical, and spatial information can be discovered that illustrates how the first African American newspaper fought against the influences of white society in the early 19th century and created a space for the black community that became meaningful enough to transform America into a place in which African Americans identified as Americans. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to combine traditional research and close reading with digital analysis (machine reading) by using different digital tools to illustrate how Freedom's Journal used text to combat the influences/powers that were shaping the early 19th century, and create a new and different type of historical narrative about how one oppressed community was successfully able to fight another dominant community through the use of text.
