Marisol Escobar, known in the 1960s as the "Latin Garbo," is a sculptor famous for showing with the Pop art greats. However, Marisol holds a curious position in art history, stranded between the formalism of the 50s and 60s male dominant Pop movement and the conceptual experimentation and radicalism of the 1970s. However, Marisol holds a curious position in art history, stranded between the formalism of the 50s and 60s male dominant Pop movement and the conceptual experimentation and radicalism of the 1970s. Her quiet yet intense observation pinpoints the overriding human elements present in the objects of her scrutiny. Most notable for turning her gaze inwards, her self-portraiture defies easy categorization. Marisol's approach to self-portraiture is in service to the exploration of her own identity. Yet, from the 1990s onwards, Marisol's work has received little scholarly coverage despite her stylistic affinities within Postmodern discourse. Therefore, I will discuss Marisol's body of work, use of iconography and development of style in the last three decades which focuses on the artist's expression of identity, sexuality, and power.

Show moreMetallic films, in conjunction with biochemical-targeted probes, are expected to provide early diagnosis, targeted therapy and non-invasive monitoring for epidemiology applications. The resonance wavelength peaks, both plasmonic and Wood-Rayleigh Anomalies (WRAs), in the scattering spectra are affected by the metallic architecture. As of today, much research has been devoted to extinction efficiency in the plasmonic region. However, Wood Rayleigh Anomalies (WRAs) typically occur at wavelengths associated with the periodic distance of the structures. A significant number of papers have already focused on the plasmonic region of the visible spectrum, but a less explored area of research was presented here; the desired resonance wavelength region was 400-500nm, corresponding to the WRA for the silver film with perforated hole with a periodic distance of 400nm. Simulations obtained from the discrete dipole approximation (DDA) method, show sharp spectral bands (either high or low scattering efficiencies) in both wavelength regions of the visible spectrum simulated from Ag film with cylindrical hole arrays In addition, surprising results were obtained in the parallel scattering spectra, where the electric field is contained in the XY plane, when the angle between the metallic surface and the incident light was adjusted to 14 degrees; a bathochromic shift was observed for the WRA peak suggesting a hybrid resonance mode. Metallic films have the potential to be used in instrumental techniques for use as sensors, i.e. surface plasmon resonance affinity biosensors, but are not limited to such instrumental techniques. Although the research here was aimed towards affinity biosensors, other sensory designs can benefit from the optimized Ag film motifs. The intent of the study was to elucidate metal film motifs, when incorporated into instrumental analysis, allowing the quantification of genetic material in the visible region. Any research group that routinely benefits from quantification of various analytes in solution matrices will also benefit from this study, as there are a bewildering number of instrumental sensory methods and setups available.

Show moreHaruki Murakami's Norwegian Wood (1987) veers from his favored detective-fiction genre by offering readers a 1960s coming-of-age romance, a story whose plot nonetheless spins around the protagonist seeking out his personal identity. The conflicts between Japanese tradition and modern, global perspectives are illustrated through the inclusion of popular culture elements such as music, literature and films. This thesis seeks to show how the novel's references to popular culture of the 1960s combine to help the protagonist establish an identity for himself as well as his place within the universal community. First, though, the project explores the impact of the translatability issues that arise with each of the novel's two English translations, variations dictated by the needs of differing audiences. The introduction provides an overview of the study, as well as historical background pertinent to the understanding of the Sixties-era popular culture iconography privileged by Murakami. My methodology favors a cultural studies approach and utilizes reader response and reception theories. Separate chapters then compare specifics between the two translations and examine the functionality and significance of music, literature and film within the novel. The conclusion justifies the subsequent deviations between the translations and argues for the necessity and value of both English versions, but claims Rubin's as the definitive English translation. Likewise, the study of the novel's many popular culture references exemplifies the roles that music, books, and film play in the creation of the protagonist's individual identity in Norwegian Wood while simultaneously illustrating the effectiveness of using globally recognizable media as a bridge between cultures.

I approach artmaking with a sense of intrigue, portraying the human condition as seen through my own eyes. The results that surface are female forms combined with subliminal subjective symbolism a fusion of my personal experiences and influences created through a partially subconscious process. I use this artistic process to help me understand myself and I dare my viewers to seek their own answers within the implied narratives I choose to paint.
