The data was collected for the 1992-1993 school year. A survey administered to all of the 67 school districts in Florida determined what types of incentives were being used, to what degree the school districts were able to reduce costs, and what types of incentives were effective. In depth information was obtained from interviews with assistant superintendents, personnel directors, and State Department of Education Specialists. A relationship was found between the amount of discretionary income and the type of incentive offered by the school districts. The school districts with budgets under $60 million were only able to primarily offer bonus incentives, while those above this level used annuities or combinations. An experiment was discovered using a different type of incentive--insurance. A negative relationship was discovered between annuities and employee interest during the year of the study. Recommendations were made for additional research on the insurance program as well as other cost cutting improvements.

The problem was to determine if expectation, satisfaction, and performance gap levels differed between freshman and seniors in 1995 and freshman and seniors in 1998 based on class level, gender and age. The study examined four selected scales from the twelve scales derived from the Student Satisfaction Inventory (SSI): Campus Climate, Campus Life, Campus Support Services, and Instruction Effectiveness. Respondents rated all items on a 7-point Likert scale with respect to their expectations of and satisfaction with student services represented by the scales. Findings indicated that, for both 1995 and 1998, freshman had significantly higher levels of expectation than did seniors in regard to campus climate, campus life and campus support services; freshman has significantly higher levels of satisfaction than seniors with campus climate, campus life, campus support services and instructional effectiveness; seniors had significantly higher levels of unmet needs than did freshman for campus support services and instructional effectiveness, and; there were no significant differences between freshman and seniors according to gender or age. Responses of 1995 freshman and seniors and 1998 freshman and seniors were similar. The four selected scales served as having the potential to guide administrators in assessing the levels of student satisfaction with both academic and nonacademic student services.

Show moreUniversity of Central Florida College of Engineering Thesis; A simple and powerful new paraxial ray formalism is shown to provide an alternate method for designing Gaussian Beam Resonators. The theory utilizes the Delano yybar diagram approach and is an extension of the recent work by Shack and Kessler for laser systems. The method is shown to be complementary to the conventional ABCD method and is founded upon J.A. Arnaud's pioneering ideas for complex rays. The thesis develops an analytic formulation of a ray based complex wavefront curvature and yields a clearly generalized description of spherical wave propagation, for which Gaussian beams are considered a special case. The resultant theory unifies the complex q parameter and the ABCD law, with the yybar complex ray components and also suggests that the ABCD law for the complex q parameter has its origin in the yybar complex ray. New fundamental equations for designing stable multi-element resonators using the yybar coordinates are derived, and it is shown that the yybar diagram provides a novel method for defining automatically stable resonators. Various applications for the yybar design technique are also discussed, including the setting of convenient design constraints, the description of M2 beams, generating phase diagrams, and resonator synthesis and analysis.

Although many instructors use the lecture method to teach, it many not be the most productive tool for students to learn. The information from this study could be of help when an instructor is preparing to instruct a group of students in an honors, AP (advanced placement) or gifted class as to determine what activities would provide the best retention of material. The results of this study were analyzed to examine the variables of being an honors or non-honors student, gender, age, ethnicity, degree being pursued and being a full time or part time student. According to the Chi2 analysis, it was found that there is no one learning style that is preferred by students who take honors classes versus other students. It was also discovered that gender, age, ethnicity, degree being pursued and being either a full time or part time student did not impact preferred learning style for the students on the East Campus of Valencia Community College. Suggested use for this study would be to inform instructors and faculty that there is no one learning style preferred by the honors student. This information can not be reiterated enough to ensure that students are given many different types of opportunities to successfully accomplish their academic goals.

Show moreUniversity of Central Florida College of Engineering Thesis; There have been many studies performed and techniques applied to solve the problem of estimating man-month effort for software projects. Despite all the effort expended to solving this problem the results achieved from the various techniques have not been embraced by the software community as very reliable or accurate. This thesis uses Monte Carlo methods to obtain optimal values for COCOMO effort multipliers which minimize the average of the absolute values of the relative errors (AARE) of man-month estimate for two industry supplied casebases. For example, when using three COCOMO cost drivers (complexity, language experience, application experience) and the COCOMO effort multiplier values, AARE values were 60% for casebase 1 and 53% for casebase 2; using Monte Carlo to obtain optimal effort multiplier values, AARE values were 34% for casebase 1 and 41% for casebase 2. By repeatedly removing the cases which contributed the greatest Absolute Relative Error, the Monte Carlo method was also used to determine optimal casebase subsets with AARE values of less than 10%. This latter approach identifies casebase cases for which the cost drivers may have been rated incorrectly or cases which are not rated consistently with respect to a subset of cases.

A third method is presented that does not use extra amplifiers for summation nor multicoupling. This third method uses identical bandpass amplifies and employs resistor summing to provide multicoupling. The name of this configuration is the "Dual Amplifier Bandpass Filter Employing Resistor Summing" (DABFERS). This configuration is economically attractive, has low sensitivity and better phase lag characteristics. In addition, third order prototypes are examined and a solution method for higher order prototypes is suggested.

Florida Technological University College of Engineering Thesis; The effects of quenching conditions, single-step and two-step aging treatments on the tensile properties of an AL-4.5%Cu-1.5%Mg alloy has been investigated. Results indicate that two distinctly different precipitates of GPB and S' form during aging. Single-step aging at 140°C, 160°C and 190°C indicated that 24 hours at 160°C produced optimum strength (67 ksi UTS). Two-step aging for 3 days at 140°C plus 190°C resulted in a...

Slow (oil) quenching as well as direct quenching improved the tensile properties when aged at 190°C. Reversion occurred slowly over the temperature range 250°C to 350°C.

The jet airplane is a good example: the large-scale turbulence of the exhaust gases in the jet forms an unusually intense source of sound the control of which is quite difficult. The additionally generated fan noises add characteristic fan tones which are particularly noticeable on landing approaches. the human ear is the vulnerable receiver of these noises, and the problem becomes one of deciding how much jet engine noise reduction is required for the comfort or safety of the receiver, and then to devise ways to achieve it.

Show moreFlorida Technological University College of Engineering Thesis; In early 1973 Professor Fred O. Simons Jr., of Florida Technological University, suggested the topic for this research report. During control engineering discussions, it was proposed that a D.C. Shunt Motor could be constrained to perform in an idealized sense for the static case. The purposed of this report is to provide a reasonably comprehensive examination of a control which linearizes the torque-speed relationship of a dc servo system. The fundamental goal is to determine a control which linearizes the torque-speed output relation of a system, in which a dc shunt motor is under basic armature control. Consequently, the emphasis is on a concept and technique rather than the design of the system process. In this regard, the report does not delve into performance analysis, or design of the system to constrain the torque and speed parameters to operate along an idealized curve.

Show moreUniversity of Central Florida College of Arts and Sciences Thesis; A computer screen places each of us in an interface and virtual reality provides a totally simulated environment, a virtual world that we can enter. Enterface is a novella that examines the question first posed by Michael Heim: How far can we enter cyberspace and still remain human? It also explores the power and the limitation of language and the role of stories to shape reality in human life. Its themes are death, technology, ethics, and love. It is informed by Wittgensteinian philosophy, Norse mythology, and the "metaphysics of virtual reality." The plot involves Moses Mackinow, a former Air Force officer and entrepreneur, who decides there should be a way to simply live forever. He hits upon the idea that life could be digitized, and a civilization, a world of complete, sentient humans could be created in cyberspace--a world he could enter upon his death and continue to live. A variety of technologies are available to digitize the physical human (x-rays, CTSCNS, Magnetic Resonance Images, graphic images, etc.), but the big problem is how to synthesize his human heart. Moses decides that the stories of his life are the keys to creating the "rag and bone shop" of his eternal heart. Getting the stories "right" is critical to the prospect of digitizing life and is a major focus of the novella action. The novella traces the reduction of Moses as a a human being as he pursues his obsession, compromising one principle after another. Everything in the environment of the novella, reflects this reduction. Everything becomes less than it was, a glimpse of humanity reduced to bits and bytes, floating 1's and 0's. Enterface is a work at war with itself.
