Show moreWithin the United States, more than a million jobs in science and engineering (S(&)E) are projected over the next few years; yet, the Nation lacks the workforce to meet these demands. Despite the need for a more diverse, qualified workforce, African Americans/Blacks remain disproportionately underrepresented in science occupations, science degree attainment, and in science postsecondary majors. The lack of science participation is reflective of how minority secondary students view science and science occupations as many consider the pursuit of a science career as unfavorable. Moreover, minority secondary students, who do choose to pursue science occupations, seem to possess inaccurate (or a lack of) occupational knowledge necessary to do so successfully. Therefore, an understanding of antecedents to career choice will assist educational professionals in addressing the underrepresentation of diverse populations, such as African Americans/Blacks, within the science workforce. The purpose of this study is to garner insight into the science occupational images, occupational and educational aspirations of African American/Black fourth and five grade students. Gottfredson's Theory of Circumscription and Compromise, in conjunction with extant empirical literature, serves as the foundation for the study's conceptual framework. A qualitative case study design was used. The qualitative data provided a contextual understanding of science occupational images, occupational and educational aspirations. Participant-produced drawings, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews served as sources for data collection. Overall, participants lacked some occupational knowledge. Participants viewed scientists as mostly male and Black. Additionally, the occupation of scientist was perceived as a dangerous and of high status. Lastly, half of the participants expressed aspirations to be a scientist, while a majority expressed college educational aspirations.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between health insurance status and diabetes management (in terms of medication adherence and physical activity levels) in Black adults based on socioeconomic factors. Data were harvested from the Sample Adult Questionnaires of the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) between the years of 2010 and 2016. The survey questions that were collected included information about the participants' income, education level, insurance status, diabetes diagnosis, medication therapy and physical activity levels. This study employed the most recent version of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software. The association between diabetes management and socioeconomic factors were analyzed using chi-square analysis. It was hypothesized that Black adults who were uninsured, lower income, and less-educated would report lower adherence to medication and lower physical activity participation when compared to their insured, higher income, and higher-educated counterparts. However, there was no statistically significant relationship between health insurance status and diabetes management in people of different socioeconomic status. Too few people met the weekly recommendations for moderate exercise thus chi-square outcomes for physical activity were invalid. This study will be beneficial for future research as it has provided more generalizable information on this topic due to the use of a national dataset. This study also highlighted the importance of adequate physical activity interventions for this population and can be used for further research on Black adults with diabetes.

Show moreThis collective case study explores the nature of the relationship between teachers' use of culturally responsive teaching (CRT) practices and students' engagement in constructing viable arguments and critiquing the reasoning of others (SMP3). This study was informed by the Common Core State Standards Initiative related to developing mathematically proficient students through the use of student engagement practices consistent with the standards for mathematical practice. As a means to support teachers' facilitating specific student engagement practices, professional development was provided. This study is situated in the growing body of research associated with student engagement and cultural identity. The case of two teachers was defined from interviews, classroom observations, journal prompts, and student artifacts. Data was collected before, during, and after professional development following a cross-case analysis. Four themes emerged: (a) shift in teacher practice; (b) depth and breadth of the knowledge of culturally responsive teaching and standard for mathematical practice three; (c) teacher reflection and reception; and (d) classroom management. The findings suggest that the shift in teacher practice can be supported by professional development focused on reflective practice. This shift is impacted by classroom management and teachers' depth and breadth of their knowledge of CRT and SMP3.
