The subject matter discusses two applications of solar energy, a "Solar Augmented Heated System" and a "Solar Assisted Heat Pump." The solar augmented system and the solar assisted system have the same components; however, the way they are used is of primary concern. A solar system in parallel with a heat pump is called "Solar Augmented Heating System" or in series with a heat pump is a "Solar Assisted Heat Pump" A 2000 ft2 house was utilized as the basis of the design. The heating load was calculated from the construction materials. With this information the collector area, tank volume and heat pump sizes were determined. Once the system size and design was completed, TRNSYS, a "Transient Simulation Program" was used to simulate the two systems. A comparison was made of the two systems for a 21 day period to determine which of the two systems is more advantageous to use.

Florida Technological University College of Engineering Thesis; The effect of nonstirred aqueous portland cement solution on the corrosion rates of zinc and cadmium metal using Tafel extropolation and linear polarization measurements has been investigated. Results indicate that for the corrosion systems under investigation, zinc metal has a higher corrosion potential and lower corrosion rate than cadmium metal.

Show moreFlorida Technological University College of Engineering Thesis; In 1975, C.S. Bauer completed a doctoral dissertation at the University of Florida which treated the Green Band Merging Control System on I-75 in Tampa, Florida. In this work, Bauer suggested the possibility for the use of computer graphics as a toll for analysis of the bands generated by the Green Band Control System Simulation developed in his dissertation. The use of computer generated movies of the bands displayed to ramp drivers by the system allows the comparison of various band control strategies without the need for field implementation and testing. With the goal of producing such films in mind, the research topic discussed in this paper was undertaken. The report introduces the reader to some of the basic aspects of computer graphics and presents specialized computer software and interface hardware for producing automated computer graphics movies from a Tektronix 4010 storage display. A brief discussion of the Tampa System and its associated simulation program is presented, and representative frames from the moves of the Tampa System produced in the research are discussed. Suggestions for additional work that could be undertaken in the research area conclude the report.

The method is applicable to the early system design phase of high energy solid propellant rockets that produce highly ionized exhaust plumes. The method is based on the premise that when a plume is highly ionized, observed signal levels can be explained by assuming the signal propagates around the plume. A simple diffraction at a straight edge model is developed and compared to measured data. The report also provides an overview of exhaust plume electromagnetics and surveys prediction techniques.

Show moreFlorida Technological University College of Engineering Thesis; A mathematical model is presented for the problem of determining the two-dimensional temperature distribution resulting from the discharge of a heated effluent into a shallow, quiescent receptacle. The physical model ofr the problem is the two-dimensional jet augmented by an imposed condition of viscous drag due to bottom friction effects. By virtue of the assumption that the physical properties of the effluent are independent of temperature over the operational temperature range of the plume, the analysis separates the total problem into a flow problem and a temperature problem. Solution of the temperature distribution is accomplished both analytically and numerically. Analytically, the temperature distribution is found through sequential integral solution of the equations defining the mathematical model, under the physical assumptions of a Gaussian flow distribution and the following relationship between the velocity and temperature distributions: [formula] where the subscript (max) denotes conditions along the jet centerline. Numerically, the equations defining the mathematical model are solved by a finite differencing technique implemented with the aid of an I.B.M. 360 digital computer. Comparison of the predictions of the model with the classical two-dimensional momentum jet indicate that the model is a reasonable approximation of the real physical problem. In addition, there is seen to be a critical dependence of the flow in the plume on the depth of the receptacle.

Show moreUniversity of Central Florida College of Engineering Thesis; When a filter transfer function in s is replaced with the bilinear transform in z, t he resulting discrete model represents the original continuous model within a second order accuracy of integration. A unique set of recently discovered minimum memory algorithms that perform the bilinear transform on a continuous transfer function are implemented on an INTEL 8080 microprocessor system. Scal1ng techniques are used to frequency scale all transfer functions to a standardized frequency. All data words are represented in a signed binary double precision format to maintain higher calculation speed and accuracy. Three test case transfer functions of different order are implemented using the bilinear transform algorithms. First, the algorithms are used to generate the three discrete models. Second, the continuous time models are driven by a step input function, generating a continuous time output. Third, the step function input is discretized and used to drive the bilinear algorithm derived models. Finally, the discrete outputs are compared with the continuous time outputs to validate and evaluate the software techniques used to implement the bilinear algorithms, which imply that the techniques provide a basis for new hardware designs.

Show moreFlorida Technological University College of Engineering Thesis; A perspective of the Naval Education and Training System (NETS) is developed and utilized as a framework on which a simulation model of general training system activities is constructed. The simulation model, which is based on functional activities, emphasizes the interdependent consequences of decisions and actions created through management planning, analysis, and control of training programs. A simulation experiment was conducted using a test situation description (scenario) to reflect the impact of management decisions and actions on the resulting allocation of resources and timeliness of training program activities. Conclusions are drawn regarding the utility and implications of the system dynamics model as a management tool with which to improve training. Recommendations are made regarding future experimentation and analysis which is required for sufficient development of a useful management tool.

Radio frequency power id developed by class C amplifiers, rather than conventional class A or B amplifiers. Currently, VHF power transistors are not well adapted for use as linear amplifiers, and will function far better in the class C mode. A prototype VHF transmitter which develops single sideband power with nonlinear amplifiers was designed and constructed. The transmitter characteristics were measured and analyzed to establish the feasibility of the new design.

Vertical sections of the sediment were taken at depths of .1, .5 , 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10 and l5 centimeters below the surface of the sediment-water interface. Total Phosphorus analysis was done on each section. The profile presented was then evaluated and was found that the profiles best fit the equation Y = X/ A + BX, where Y is the Phosphorus Concentration in ppm. and X is the sediment depth in cm. Correlation between the trophic state and the profiles characteristics are presented. A hypothesis as to how, the sediment profile changes as the lake experiences increased Phosphorus loading is presented, and is used to evaluate the lake studied. This discussion expresses phosphorus dynamics within the sediments in terms of adsorption, chemical changes, biological activity, and molecular and eddy diffusion.

The cross-section of literature presents some of the more advanced studies which have been conducted on medical diagnostic software. Also presented is an explanation of the logic used in diagnostic software and the results of several test cases. The survey was of physicians in the Orlando, Florida area to define the actual application of medical diagnostic software. It presented a sample of physicians' feelings concerning the present use of medical diagnostic software. From these steps, the present status of medical diagnostic software is defined and projections concerning its future made.
