| Abstract/Description: | The Affordable Care Act is creating major political changes, on the state and federal levels, and is redefining American citizens' ability to access health services. Medical and mental health social workers are in high demand within the health care workforce to advocate and assist patients in navigating through a complex health care system. Little research has been conducted in understanding future social work professionals' views and knowledge about the legislation. This exploratory-descriptive study used a convenience sample of 105 Bachelors (BSW) and Masters (MSW) level social work students to explore views on health care policy and reform based on students' personal experiences accessing health care. The study also obtained an understanding of how demographic factors affect students' support for health reform. Implications of this study show the need for greater implementation of health policy education in the social work curriculum and further research on the factors affecting students' knowledge and attitudes of health reform. | |
