The newer generations of continuous flow VADs are essentially axial or radial flow pumps, and while these devices are capable their efficiency depends upon fluid composition and flow field patterns. The most devastating complication of VAD therapy is caused by embolization of thrombi formed within the LVAD or inside the heart into the brain leading to stroke. Anticoagulation management and improved LVADs design has reduced stroke incidence, however, investigators have recently reported the incidence of thromboembolic cerebral events is still significant and ranges from 14% to 47% over a period of 6-12 months. Blood clots may cause obstruction of critical vessels, such as cerebral arteries, reducing brain oxygenation and resulting in devastating consequences like major neurocognitive malfunction and complications which can be fatal.The hypothesis that incidence of stroke can be significantly reduced by adjusting the VAD outflow cannula implantation to direct dislodged thrombi away from the cerebral vessels has been recently supported by a series of steady flow computations assuming rigid vessel walls for the vasculature. Such studies have shown as much as a 50% reduction in embolization rates depending on outflow cannula implantation. In this study, a pulsatile fully compliant vessel wall model is developed to further establish this hypothesis. A time-dependent multi-scale Eulerian Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis of patient-specific geometry models of the VAD-bed vasculature is coupled with a 3D Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of the mechanical response of the vascular walls to establish the VAD assisted hemodynamics. A Lagrangian particle tracking algorithm is used to determine the embolization rates of thrombi emanating from the cannula or other possible thrombogenic locations such as the aortic root. This multiscale Eulerian-Lagrangian pulsatile fluid-structure coupled paradigm allows for a fully realistic model of the hemodynamics of interest. The patient-specific geometries obtained from CT scan are implemented into the numerical domain in two modes. In the 3D CFD portion of the problem, the geometry accounts solely for the flow volume where the fluid is modelled as constant density and non-Newtonian under laminar pulsatile flow conditions. The blood-thrombus ensemble in treated as a two-phase flow, handled by an Eulerian-Lagrangian coupled scheme to solve the flow field and track particle transport. Thrombi are modelled as constant density spherical particles. Particle interactions are limited to particle-to-wall and particle-to-fluid, while particle-to-particle interaction are neglected for statistical purposes. On the other hand, with the help of Computer Aided Design (CAD) software a patient-specific aortic wall geometry with variable wall thickness is brought into the numerical domain. FEA is applied to determine the aortic wall cyclic displacement under hydrodynamic loads. To properly account for wall deformation, the arterial wall tissue incorporates a hyperelastic material model based on the anisotropic Holzapfel model for arteries. This paradigm is referred to as Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) and allows structural analysis in conjunction with flow investigation to further monitor pathological flow patterns. The FSI model is driven by time dependent flow and pressure boundary conditions imposed at the boundaries of the 3D computational domain through a 50 degree of freedom 0D lumped parameter model (LPM) electric circuit analog of the peripheral VAD-assisted circulation.Results are presented for a simple vessel model of the ascending aorta to validate the anisotropic fiber orientation implementation. Arterial wall dilation is measured between 5-20% in the range reported in literature. Hemodynamics of the VAD assisted flow in a patient-derived geometry computed using rigid vessels walls are compared to those for a linearly elastic vessel wall model and a hyperelastic anisotropic vessel wall model. Moreover, the thromboembolization rates are presented and compared for pulsatile hemodynamics in rigid and compliant wall models. Pulsatile flow solutions for embolization probabilities corroborate the hypothesis that tailoring the LVAD cannula implantation configuration can significantly reduce thromboembolization rates, and this is consistent with indications from previous steady-flow calculations.

These specimens are: (a) 13 round bars with different notches (axial symmetric tension); (b) 13 flat grooved specimens with different grooves; (c) 3 small round cylinders. Mechanical tests up to fracture were conducted on these specimens to characterize the influence of hydrostatic stress and Lode angle on material plasticity and fracture. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations were performed on both original and fractured specimens to investigate different micromechanical revelations and features. The plasticity model with pressure and Lode angle effects (PPL model) and the modified Mohr-Coulomb (MMC) fracture criterion were used to predict plastic flow and fracture initiation behaviors under different loading conditions in finite element simulations. A model optimization method using ISIGHT was set up to achieve simulation results that were well correlated with experimental data. The effects of heat-treatment on material strength and ductility of AISI 4340 steel were also discussed. This work was further carried onto the microvoids based metal plasticity theory. The well-known Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) model was calibrated for AISI 4340 steel. It is found that the GTN model is not sufficient in simulating test data for the 16 Rockwell hardness plane strain specimens. Therefore, The GTN model is modified to include the Lode angle dependence on matrix material plasticity. It is also found that using afixed or constant microvoid volume fraction at failure (ff) for all loading conditions is inadequate. Following a similar derivation of the MMC fracture model, the microvoid volume fraction at failure (ff) becomes a function of both stress triaxiality and Lode angle. This new criterion is named (GTN-MMC). The proposed plasticity and fracture models were implemented into ABAQUS through a user-defined material subroutine (VUMAT) for FE simulations. Composite materials are complicated in material mechanical properties and less investigated compared to metallic materials. Engineering composites can be categorized into polymer matrix composites (PMCs), metal matrix composites (MMCs) and ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) according to their matrix materials.A set of mechanical experiments ranging from micro scale (single fiber composite and thin film composite) to macro scale (PMCs and MMCs) were conducted to fully understand the material behavior of composite materials. Loading conditions investigated includes uniaxial tension, three-point bending, uniaxial compression, simple shear, tension combined with shear, and compression combined with shear.For single fiber composite and thin-film composite, details of each composition are modelled. For the PMCs and MMCs which have plenty of reinforcements like fibers and particles, the details of the composition of structures cannot be modelled due to the current limitations of computing power. A mechanics framework of composite materials including elasticity, plasticity, failure initiation and post failure softening is proposed and applied to two types of composite materials.Uniaxial tension loading is applied to several single fiber composites and thin film composites. A surprising phenomenon, controllable and sequential fragmentation of the brittle fiber to produce uniformly sized rods along meters of polymer cladding, rather than the expected random or chaotic fragmentation, is observed with a necking propagation process. A combination of necking propagation model, fiber cracking model and interfacial model are proposed and applied to the finite element simulations. Good predictions of necking propagation and uniform fragmentation phenomenon are achieved. This modeling method of the micro-scale phenomenon reveals the physics inside composites in micro scale and helps the understanding of the process of nano fragmentation.Unidirectional carbon fiber composites were tested under multi-axial loading conditions including tensile/compression/shear loadings along and perpendicular to the fiber direction. Compression dominated tests showed a brittle fracture mode like local kicking/buckling, while tension dominated tests showed a fracture mode like delamination and fiber breakage. Simple shear tests with displacement control showed matrix material hardening and softening before total failure. The proposed modeling framework is successfully applied to the PMCs. A new parameter ? was introduced to represent different loading conditions of PMCs. Numerical simulations using finite element method well duplicated the anisotropic elasticity and plasticity of this material. Failure features like delamination was simulated using cohesive surface feature. It is also applied to carbon fiber composite laminates to further validate the proposed model.A round of experimental study on high volume fraction of metallic matrix nano composites was conducted, including uniaxial tension, uniaxial compression, and three-point bending. The example materials were two magnesium matrix composites reinforced with 10 and 15% vol. SiC particles (50nm size). Brittle fracture mode was exhibited under uniaxial tension and three-point bending, while shear dominated ductile fracture mode (up to 12% fracture strain) was observed under uniaxial compression. Transferring the Modified Mohr Coulomb (MMC) ductile fracture model to the stress based MMC model (sMMC), the proposed modeling framework is applied to this material. This model has been demonstrated to be capable of predicting the coexistence of brittle and ductile fracture modes under different loading conditions for MMCs. Numerical simulations using finite element method well duplicated the material strength, fracture initiation sites and crack propagation modes of the Mg/SiC nano composites with a good accuracy.

A new formalism recently developed by I.V. Belova, N.S. Kulkarni, Y.H. Sohn and G.E. Murch, based on linear response theory combined with the Boltzmann(-)Matano method allows determination of tracer and interdiffusion coef?cients simultaneously from a single, isotope-free solid to solid diffusion couple experiment. In this study, for the first time, an experimental investigation with an analytical approach based on the new formalism has been carried out in the binary Cu-Ni system. Pure Cu and Ni thin films were deposited in between several binary diffusion couples with varying terminal alloy compositions (such as Cu, Cu-25Ni, Cu-50Ni, Cu-75Ni, Ni). Diffusion couples were then annealed at 800(&)deg;C, 900(&)deg;C and 1000(&)deg;C. After annealing, the couples were water quenched, cross-sectioned, and prepared for compositional characterization. Scanning Electron Microscopy was employed to examine the interdiffusion zone. Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy was conducted to obtain concentration profiles for quantitative analysis. The superposition of the concentration profiles of thin film and interdiffusion were analyzed for the simultaneous determination of tracer and interdiffusion coefficients. The tracer diffusion coefficient of Cu, tracer diffusion coefficient of Ni and inter-diffusion coefficients simultaneously determined using the experimental methodology based on the novel formalism derived, and produced results consistent with previously reported values determined independently by radiotracer and interdiffusion experiments.

Challenges exist with additive manufacturing that limits its replacement of conventional manufacturing techniques, most especially a comprehensive understanding of the anisotropic behavior of these materials and how it is reflected in observed tensile, torsional and fatigue mechanical responses. As such, there is a need to understand how the build orientation of as-built additively manufactured metals, affects mechanical performance (e.g. monotonic and cyclic behavior, cyclically hardening/softening behavior, plasticity effects on fatigue life etc.); and to use constitutive modeling to both support experimental findings, and provide approximations of expected behavior (e.g. failure surfaces, monotonic and cyclic response, correlations between tensile and fatigue properties), for orientations and experiments not tested, due to the expensive cost associated with AM. A comprehensive framework has been developed to characterize the anisotropic behavior of as-built additively manufactured metals (i.e. Stainless Steel GP1 (SS GP1), similar in chemical composition to Stainless Steel 17-4PH), through a series of mechanical testing, microscopic evaluation and constitutive modeling, which were used to identify a reduced specimen size for characterizing these materials. An analysis of the torsional response of additively manufactured Inconel 718 has been performed to assess the impact of build orientation and as-built conditions on the shearing behavior of this material. Experimental results from DMLS SS GP1 and AM Inconel 718 from literature were used to constitutively model the material responses of these additively manufactured metals. Overall, this framework has been designed to serve as standard, from which build orientation selection can be used to meet specific desired industry requirements.

These models are used to select suitable process parameters for preparing and micro-machining of these advanced materials. The material system studied in this research is Magnesium Metal Matrix Composites (Mg-MMCs) reinforced with nano-sized and micro-sized silicon carbide (SiC) particles.This research is motivated by increasing demands of miniaturized components with high mechanical performance in various industries. Mg-MMCs become one of the best candidates due to its light weight, high strength, and high creep/wear resistance. However, the improved strength and abrasive nature of the reinforcements bring great challenges for the subsequent micro-machining process.Systematic experimental investigations on the machinability of Mg-MMCs reinforced with SiC nano-particles have been conducted. The nanocomposites containing 5 Vol.%, 10 Vol.% and 15 Vol.% reinforcements, as well as pure magnesium, are studied by using the Design of Experiment (DOE) method. Cutting forces, surface morphology and surface roughness are characterized to understand the machinability of the four materials. Based on response surface methodology (RSM) design, experimental models and related contour plots have been developed to build a connection between different materials properties and cutting parameters. Those models can be used to predict the cutting force, the surface roughness, and then optimize the machining process.An analytical cutting force model has been developed to predict cutting forces of Mg-MMCs reinforced with nano-sized SiC particles in the micro-milling process. This model is different from previous ones by encompassing the behaviors of reinforcement nanoparticles in three cutting scenarios, i.e., shearing, ploughing and elastic recovery. By using the enhanced yield strength in the cutting force model, three major strengthening factors are incorporated, including load-bearing effect, enhanced dislocation density strengthening effect and Orowan strengthening effect. In this way, the particle size and volume fraction, as significant factors affecting the cutting forces, are explicitly considered. In order to validate the model, various cutting conditions using different size end mills (100 (&)#181;m and 1 mm dia.) have been conducted on Mg-MMCs with volume fraction from 0 (pure magnesium) to 15 Vol.%. The simulated cutting forces show a good agreement with the experimental data. The proposed model can predict the major force amplitude variations and force profile changes as functions of the nanoparticles' volume fraction. Next, a systematic evaluation of six ductile fracture models has been conducted to identify the most suitable fracture criterion for micro-scale cutting simulations. The evaluated fracture models include constant fracture strain, Johnson-Cook, Johnson-Cook coupling criterion, Wilkins, modified Cockcroft-Latham, and Bao-Wierzbicki fracture criterion. By means of a user material subroutine (VUMAT), these fracture models are implemented into a Finite Element (FE) orthogonal cutting model in ABAQUS/Explicit platform. The local parameters (stress, strain, fracture factor, velocity fields) and global variables (chip morphology, cutting forces, temperature, shear angle, and machined surface integrity) are evaluated. Results indicate that by coupling with the damage evolution, the capability of Johnson-Cook and Bao-Wierzbicki can be further extended to predict accurate chip morphology. Bao-Wierzbiki-based coupling model provides the best simulation results in this study. The micro-cutting performance of MMCs materials has also been studied by using FE modeling method. A 2-D FE micro-cutting model has been constructed. Firstly, homogenized material properties are employed to evaluate the effect of particles' volume fraction. Secondly, micro-structures of the two-phase material are modeled in FE cutting models. The effects of the existing micro-sized and nano-sized ceramic particles on micro-cutting performance are carefully evaluated in two case studies. Results show that by using the homogenized material properties based on Johnson-Cook plasticity and fracture model with damage evolution, the micro-cutting performance of nano-reinforced Mg-MMCs can be predicted. Crack generation for SiC particle reinforced MMCs is different from their homogeneous counterparts; the effect of micro-sized particles is different from the one of nano-sized particles.In summary, through this research, a better understanding of the unique cutting mechanism for particle reinforced heterogeneous materials has been obtained. The effect of reinforcements on micro-cutting performance is obtained, which will help material engineers tailor suitable material properties for special mechanical design, associated manufacturing method and application needs. Moreover, the proposed analytical and numerical models provide a guideline to optimize process parameters for preparing and micro-machining of heterogeneous MMCs materials. This will eventually facilitate the automation of MMCs' machining process and realize high-efficiency, high-quality, and low-cost manufacturing of composite materials.

Show moreMg-based metal matrix nanocomposites (MMNCs) with mechanical properties, superior to those of coarse-grained composites, are promising structural materials for applications in the automotive and aerospace industries. The research in this area was primarily focused earlier on either micro-scaled reinforcements or nano-scaled reinforcements with very low volume fractions. MMNCs with high volume fractions have not been explored yet. In this research, we study the processing, microstructures and properties of MMNCs containing ceramic nanoparticles up to 30 vol.%.We first investigated the mechanical alloying of Al2O3 nanoparticles and pure Mg under high-energy ball milling conditions. The phase evolution and their distribution were evaluated as a function of milling time. Then, the thermal stability of the formed nanocomposites was investigated by annealing it at high temperatures. It indicated that an exchange reaction had occurred to a large extent between Mg and Al2O3 resulting in the formation of Al and MgO phases. Additionally, the reaction between Al and un-reacted Mg led to the formation of Mg-Al intermetallics.Due to the reaction between Mg and Al2O3 during the milling and annealing process, we attempted to synthesize Mg/SiC nanocomposites. The mixed powders containing 0, 5, 10 and 15 vol.% SiC were produced by high energy ball milling and then the powders were consolidated via spark plasma sintering. The phase constitutions and microstructures of the Mg/SiC nanocomposites were characterized. SiC nanoparticles (average particle size ~14 nm) appear to be homogeneously dispersed within the matrix, and the average inter-particle spacings of all the Mg/SiC nanocomposites were smaller than 50 nm. Microscopic methods, even at high magnifications did not reveal any significant porosity in the as-processed MMNCs.Mechanical characterization of the Mg/SiC nanocomposites was conducted using the microindentation test. Besides the microhardness test, different intermediate pause times and loading rates were used to evaluate the stiffness and loading rate sensitivity of our samples. The abnormal microhardness and loading rate sensitivity were showed for the Mg-15 vol.% SiC samples. At the same time, the monotonic increase of stiffness with volume fraction was exhibited in the Mg/SiC nanocomposites.Finally, we investigated the quasi-static and dynamic response of Mg/SiC nanocomposites and microcomposites, and discussed the underlying mechanisms. Strain softening was noticed in the milled Mg sample under quasi-static compression. Similarly, the strengthening effect leveling off was also observed in the Mg-15 vol.% SiC samples under either quasi-static or high-strain rate uniaxial compression conditions. No significant plastic deformation was observed in the Mg/SiC nanocomposites. The estimated strain rate sensitivity of all the Mg/SiC nanocomposites in this work was around 0.03, which is much smaller than 0.3 and 0.6, observed for 100 nm and 45 nm grain size pure Mg individually. In particular, the existing models fail in predicting the inverse volume fraction effect, and other mechanisms are yet to be explored. The presence of SiC nanoparticles may play an important role that leads to this difference.

Show moreDue to the exceptional strength, stiffness and excellent electrical and thermal properties, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been regarded as promising candidates for advanced nanoelectronics and multifunctional nanocomposites. In this dissertation, the interaction of CNTs with metals have been investigated and the resultant electrical conduction have been analyzed, aiming to develop innovative avenues to best utilize CNTs' potential. In order to do so, quantum mechanics calculations have been carried out to study that how to obtain greater electrical conduction by doping metals (Cu, Al) which tailor the electronic structure of three different types of metal-CNT interactions, : 1) encapsulation of atoms inside the CNTs, 2) adsorption of atoms onto CNT surface, and 3) substitutional doping. Models of different doping methods were built and optimized with Density Functional Theory (DFT). And in conjunction with non-equilibrium Green's function, the electronic structure and the conducting properties were then calculated.Through this study, both metallic and semiconducting CNTs have been used. Metallic CNT (5, 5) encapsulated with copper chains have been first investigated with an emphasis on the electronic structure and the resultant conductance. The Density of States (DOS) have showed that the encapsulation of Cu effectively introduced more states around the fermi level. And due to the interaction between copper and CNTs, the conductance of the metallic CNTs-Cu system can be significantly increased.In addition to copper, aluminum has been also introduced for the study. The electronic structure and transport properties of hybrid nanowires consisting of aluminum chains adsorbed on a single-wall semiconducting CNT (10, 0) have been calculated. The band structure and DOS of the hybrid nanowires have showed that the adsorption of Al can effectively reduce the band gap. And with more than 4 Al chains adsorbed, the CNT has transformed from semiconducting to conducting. The transmission eigenstates further indicated that both Al chains and the modified nanotube were responsible for the increased conduction in the hybrid nanowires. The resultant conductance of CNT (10, 0)/Al hybrid nanowire is about 40% greater than that of pure Cu nanowire with the same diameter. In order to utilize the extraordinary conductance in CNT(10,0)/Al hybrid nanowire, it is also important to investigate the end-contact between the hybrid nanowire with Al electrodes. During this work the transmission spectrum at different bias voltage were calculated to study the I-V characteristics and the electrical contact resistances at the interfaces. The results have suggested that the electrical contact resistances between Al electrodes and the hybrid nanowire is significantly lower than that of Al-pure CNT contacts, although the actual contact resistance is directional dependent that the contact resistance is reduced to 20% of that Al-pure CNT along the longitudinal direction.The possibility of substitutional doping of Cu and Al in both metallic and semiconducting CNTs were also investigated. The formation energies have showed that Al doping was more energy favorable than Cu doping in both cases. And by doping of Al or Cu, a metallic tube experienced a higher conductance and a semiconducting tube has transited to conducting.In summary, different doping methods could modify the conducting property of nanotubes. Encapsulation of Cu in metallic CNT results in a significant conductance increment. Adsorption of Al transforms semiconducting CNT to conducting and reduces the contact resistance between the nanowire and Al electrode. Substitutional doping of Cu or Al transits semiconducting nanotube to conducting and enhance the conductance of metallic nanotube.

Show moreFor many candidate materials, constitutive models and their parameters are identified using uniaxial test data. Real components, however, generally operate in a multi-axial loading environments. Consequently, constitutive models deployed by uniaxial conditions may carry over to service conditions with inherit limitations. Research is proposed to determine the constitutive model constants for the creep and plasticity responses of a material via multi-axial fatigue testing which may contain ratcheting. It is conjectured that directly regressing data under conditions that favor those of actual service use will lead to more accurate modeling under these conditions, as well as a reduced consumption of model development resources. Application of observations of multiaxial loading in the determination of constitutive modeling constants and model selection represents a paradigm shift for material characterization. Numerical simulation and experimentation are necessary for material selection for application at high temperature. The candidate material used in this study is primarily applied for structural components in high-temperature environments for steam generating systems (-) 304 stainless steel. It confers an excellent balance of ductility, corrosion resistance, and creep resistance at moderate temperatures (i.e., up to 550?C). Under service conditions, both creep and cyclic plasticity can occur under either isothermal or non-isothermal conditions. Accurate deformation modeling and life prediction of these structures only achieved with an accurate understanding of how this and other key alloys behave under complex conditions. This research conveys a proposed methodology that can be used to apply creep and plasticity constitutive models that correlate with experimental data. Several creep and plasticity models are examined to augment the accuracy of the models. These results are presented to illustrate modeling performance. Based on this idea has been determined that novel methods of measuring the accuracy of modeling be needed, as well as methods for optimizing material response under multiaxial conditions. The models are applied under service-like conditions to gain an understanding of how this and other key alloys behave under complex conditions. This research will study the complex tensile-torsion loading to determine the constitutive constants for material, and thus will decrease the number of uniaxial experiments. Additionally, combined analytical and experimental methods will be used to establish the Bree diagram for elevated temperature tensile-torsion responses. This deformation mechanism map has been useful as a design tool for materials undergoing ratcheting.

This is due to its ability to achieve many effects simultaneously, viz., reduction in grain size, introduction of a variety of crystal defects, disordering of the lattice, and modifying the crystal structures of materials; all these allowing alloying and phase transformations to occur in powders. In this Dissertation, we have synthesized a number of different alloy phases in Ni- and Fe-based alloy systems using MA.The as-received, blended, and milled powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy techniques to obtain information about the overall microstructure and chemical compositions. The NiX2 (X = Ge and Si) phases were synthesized in the Ni-Ge and Ni-Si systems. MA of Ni-Ge powder blends was investigated to study phase evolution as a function of milling time. On milling the powders for 5 h, the equilibrium NiGe phase started to form, and its amount in the powder increased with increasing milling time. On milling for about 60 h, the equilibrium intermetallic NiGe and Ge powder particles reacted to form the metastable NiGe2 phase. However, on milling for a longer time (75 h), the metastable phase transformed back to the equilibrium NiGe phase.Synthesis of the NiSi2 intermetallic phase depended on the Si content in the initial powder blend. For example, while in the Ni-60 at.% Si powder blend, only the NiSi phase was present homogeneously, the powder blend of the Ni-67 at.% Si composition contained the NiSi phase along with a small amount of unreacted Si. But in the Ni-75 at.% Si and Ni-80 at% compositions, the NiSi phase that had formed earlier (after 2 h of milling) and the remaining free Si powder reacted to form the equilibrium intermetallic NiSi2 phase. This constitution in the milled powder has been attributed to a partial loss of Si content during MA. Formation of Ni(Si) solid solutions with a solubility of about 18.2 at.% and 20.6 at.% for the Ni-75 at.% Si and Ni-80 at.% Si powder blends, respectively, was also achieved in the early stages of MA.In the Fe-C system, we were able to synthesize ferrite, cementite, and mixtures of the two phases. We were able to obtain the Fe-C solid solution phase (ferrite) with a BCC structure and the cementite phase with an orthorhombic structure in the eutectoid Fe-0.8 wt. % C composition, while a homogeneous cementite phase had formed at the higher carbon content of Fe-7.0 wt. % C after 30 h of milling time.In the case of the Fe-18Cr-xNi (x = 8, 12, and 20) system, the current investigation showed that the phase constitution depended significantly on the Ni content in the powder blend. Whereas mostly the martensite or the ferrite and austenite phase mixture was present at lower Ni contents, a completely homogeneous austenite phase was present in the alloy with 20% Ni.

Show moreWith the increasing data handling and power requirements of today's spacecraft, accurately modeling the effects of cabling on spacecraft structural dynamics has become an increasingly important part of the design process. During testing, spacecraft cabling produces a damping effect on the system dynamics; however, current models often overpredict this response in higher frequency modes and produce unrealistic damping values. Previous models incorporated structural and viscous damping terms into Euler-Bernoulli and shear beams; this thesis presents a viscous damping model for Timoshenko beams that can accurately capture the effects of both spacecraft wiring and harnesses during the design phase. Damping in built-up structures shows a weak frequency-dependence; therefore, it is of interest to develop a combination of damping terms and coefficients that provide approximately frequency-independent modal damping. Where previous work included a rotation-based damping term to Euler-Bernoulli beam equations to produce frequency-independent damping, this thesis includes higher-order derivative damping terms to characterize their motion. Because Timoshenko beams account for the effects of both transverse shear and rotary inertia, it is of interest to characterize the damping coefficients using these parameters. Finally, deformed beam shapes were studied to further characterize each damping term as a physical dissipative mechanism.

One way to resolve the problem is to adopting lightweight alloys (i.e. advanced high strength steel, aluminum alloys, or magnesium alloy) in structure designs and manufacturing. Fully understanding the mechanical properties of these materials is a key step.In order to fully characterize the plasticity and fracture of magnesium AZ31B-H24 sheets, a set of mechanical experiments (170 in total) were performed under both monotonic and non-proportional loading conditions, including monotonic uniaxial tension, notch tension, in-plane uniaxial compression, wide compression (or called biaxial compression), plane strain compression, through-thickness compression, in-plane shear, punch test, uniaxial compression-tension reverse loading, and two-step uniaxial tension (cross-loading).Both the plastic strain histories and stress responses were obtained under the above loading conditions, which give a comprehensive picture of mechanical behaviors of this material. No apparent cross-hardening effect was observed for this material.An extended orthotropic yield criterion involving two linear anisotropic transformation tensors, CPB06ex2, in conjunction with its associated flow rule was fully calibrated to describe both the anisotropy in plastic flow and tension-compression asymmetry in stress-strain behaviors.A fully modularized framework to combine isotropic, kinematic, and cross hardening behaviors was established under non-monotonic loading conditions. Three sets of state variables were defined and applied to consider the effects of, a) loading history, b) twinning and de-twinning and c) different pre-strain.In order to predict ductile fracture of metal sheets, the (")mixed(") stress/strain invariants based Modified-Mohr-Coulomb (MMC) fracture model was transferred into an all-strain based MMC (eMMC) model under plane stress condition, predicting the fracture strain dependent on strain ratio or ? angle, instead of stress triaxiality and Lode angle parameter. The strain ratio or ? angle could be directly measured by digital image correlation (DIC), while the latter required finite element analysis to be determined. This method makes it possible to study material fracture behavior while bypassing plasticity. The eMMC fracture locus can be fully calibrated by fracture strains directly measured from DIC. The fracture strain was also extended by a linear transformation operating to the plastic strain tensor to incorporate the fracture anisotropy. All models were implemented into Abaqus/Explicit as a user material subroutine (VUMAT). Good prediction capability has been demonstrated for magnesium AZ31B-H24 sheets by FE simulation using shell elements.The current framework was also applied for TRIP780, BH240, DP600, and EDDQ steel sheets with adjustment, under different loading conditions. The FE simulation results for TRIP780 correlated well with experimental data under different monotonic loading conditions. The analytical results for BH240, DP600, and EDDQ demonstrated good prediction capability for cross-hardening behavior, and validated by the non-proportional experimental data under two-stage uniaxial tension.

Implementation of a reverse-BT shunt (RBTS), a synthetic bypass from the main pulmonary to the innominate artery placed to counteract aortic arch stenosis, and its effects on local and global hemodynamics were studied.A synthetic and a 3D reconstructed, patient derived anatomy after the HN procedure were utilized, with varying degrees of distal arch obstruction, or stenosis, (nominal and 90% reduction in lumen) and varying RBTS diameters (3.0, 3.5, 4.0 mm). A closed lumped parameter model (LPM) for the peripheral or distal circulation coupled to a 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model that allows detailed description of the local hemodynamics was created for each anatomy. The implementation of the RBTS in any of the chosen diameters under severe stenosis resulted in a restoration of arterial perfusion to near-nominal levels. Shunt flow velocity, vorticity, and overall wall shear stress levels are inverse functions of shunt diameter, while shunt perfusion and systemic oxygen delivery correlates positively with diameter. No correlation of shunt diameter with helicity was recorded.In the setting of the hybrid Norwood circulation, our results suggest: (1) the 4.0mm RBTS may be more thrombogenic when implemented in the absence of severe arch stenosis and (2) the 3.0mm and 3.5mm RBTS may be a more suitable alternative, with preference to the latter since it provides similar hemodynamics at lower levels of wall shear stress.

Show moreThe demand for pollution-free and recyclable engineering materials has been increased as the cost of energy and environmental concerns have risen. Green material design can lead to better environmental quality and sustainability of civil infrastructure. Road construction is one of the largest consumers of natural resources. Beneficial utilization of recycled materials can result in an important opportunity to save the mining and use of virgin materials, to preserve energy, and to save landfill space. Two main research questions addressed in this study are: (1) How much pollution, energy, natural resources, time and money can be salvaged by applying recycling materials to Hot-Mix Asphalt (HMA)?, (2) What are the optimum mix designs for those recycled materials in HMA?, and (3) Can multiple recycled materials be used at the same time to compensate each other's drawbacks? This study evaluates the structural performance and environmental-economical cost and benefit by substituting one or a combination of three recycled materials in HMA. The three recycled materials are Recycled Asphalt Shingle (RAS), Municipal Solid Waste Incineration (MSWI) Bottom Ash, and Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA). Performance evaluation of the HMA including those recycled materials has been performed by a series of laboratory experimental tests while the environmental impact was investigated by the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). In addition, Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) method has been employed to evaluate the benefit of the aforementioned recycled materials.In 2008, the Florida Legislature established a new statewide recycling goal of 75% to be achieved by the year 2020. The impact of this research aligns with this policy as it introduces a sustainable HMA that reduces the necessity of virgin aggregate and asphalt binder to 50% and 20%, respectively. In terms of environmental and economic impacts, in comparison with the regular HMA, it generates 25% less greenhouse gas emission, and for a period of 20 years, the cost of construction and maintenance would be 65% less.

Show moreTrajectory planning is important in many applications involving unmanned aerial vehicles, underwater vehicles, spacecraft, and industrial manipulators. It is still a challenging task to rapidly find an optimal trajectory while taking into account dynamic and environmental constraints. In this dissertation, a unified, varying manifold based optimal trajectory planning method inspired by several predator-prey relationships is investigated to tackle this challenging problem. Biological species, such as hoverflies, ants, and bats, have developed many efficient hunting strategies. It is hypothesized that these types of predators only move along paths in a carefully selected manifold based on the prey's motion in some of their hunting activities. Inspired by these studies, the predator-prey relationships are organized into a unified form and incorporated into the trajectory optimization formulation, which can reduce the computational cost in solving nonlinear constrained optimal trajectory planning problems. Specifically, three motion strategies are studied in this dissertation: motion camouflage, constant absolute target direction, and local pursuit. Necessary conditions based on the speed and obstacle avoidance constraints are derived. Strategies to tune initial guesses are proposed based on these necessary conditions to enhance the convergence rate and reduce the computational cost of the motion camouflage inspired strategy. The following simulations have been conducted to show the advantages of the proposed methods: a supersonic aircraft minimum-time-to-climb problem, a ground robot obstacle avoidance problem, and a micro air vehicle minimum time trajectory problem. The results show that the proposed methods can find the optimal solution with higher success rate and faster convergent speed as compared with some other popular methods. Among these three motion strategies, the method based on the local pursuit strategy has a relatively higher success rate when compared to the other two.In addition, the optimal trajectory planning method is embedded into a receding horizon framework with unknown parameters updated in each planning horizon using an Extended Kalman Filter.

The basic idea in this scheme revolves around utilizing sparse caching units, where authentication credentials pertaining to cookies are stored and fetched once needed, thereby, mitigating computational overhead generally associated with one-way hash constructions.The second and third proposed schemes rely on dividing the one-way hash construction into a hierarchical two-tier construction. Each tier component is responsible for some aspect of authentication generated by using two different hash functions. By utilizing different cryptographic hash functions arranged in two tiers, the hierarchical two-tier protocol (our second contribution) gives significant performance improvement over previously proposed solutions for securing Internet cookies. Through indexing authentication credentials by their position within the hash chain in a multi-dimensional chain, the third contribution achieves improved performance.In the fourth proposed scheme, an attempt is made to apply the one-way hash construction to achieve user and broadcast authentication in wireless sensor networks. Due to known energy and memory constraints, the one-way hash scheme is modified to mitigate computational overhead so it can be easily applied in this particular setting.The fifth scheme tries to reap the benefits of the sparse cache-supported scheme and the hierarchical scheme. The resulting hybrid approach achieves efficient performance at the lowest cost of caching possible.In the sixth proposal, an authentication scheme tailored for the multi-server single sign-on (SSO) environment is presented. The scheme utilizes the one-way hash construction in a Merkle Hash Tree and a hash calendar to avoid impersonation and session hijacking attacks. The scheme also explores the optimal configuration of the one-way hash chain in this particular environment.All the proposed protocols are validated by extensive experimental analyses. These analyses are obtained by running simulations depicting the many scenarios envisioned. Additionally, these simulations are supported by relevant analytical models derived by mathematical formulas taking into consideration the environment under investigation.

Cutter (end effector) should stay as close as possible to the reference trajectory to ensure the quality of the final products. In conventional computer numerical control (CNC), the control unit of each axis is independently designed to achieve the best individual tracking performance. However, this becomes less effective when dealing with multi-axis contour following tasks because of the lack of coordination among axes. This dissertation studies the control of multi-axis machine tools with focus on reducing the contour error. The proposed research explicitly addresses the minimization of contour error and treats the multi-axis machine tool as a multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) system instead of several decoupled single-input-single-output (SISO) systems. New control schemes are developed to achieve superior contour following performance even in the presence of disturbances. This study also extends the applications of the proposed control system from plane contours to regular contours in R3. The effectiveness of the developed control systems is experimentally verified on a micro milling machine.
