Show moreUniversity of Central Florida College of Engineering Thesis; This paper presents the background and procedures leading to development of a simulation model to analyze the impact of certain decision variables on operational system performance and workloads as the repair facility of a typical Navy field site. The research examines the impact of maintenance support concepts, as implemented by changes in the decision variables, associated with the broader application of Automatic Test Equipment. The initial effort consisted of data collection and field site surveys which culminated in defining a work flow model illustrating typical repair facility operations. The work flow model is translated into a computer simulation model. The baseline model contains all the values for failure rates, delay times, and probability decision parameters derived from the available data. The simulation model is then exercised and the output data recorded for comparison with historical data to validate the model and provide a baseline for comparison as the decision parameters are varied. Of the variables exercised, it appreas that the Built-in-Test (BIT), or Self-test capability, is one of the more important design considerations in the original operating systems.

Show moreFlorida Technological University College of Engineering Thesis; The present study was conducted to ascertain undergraduate views about the effectiveness of International Teaching Assistants (ITAs) in the American classroom. The study was administered to a stratified cluster sampling by college of the target population, undergraduate students at the University of Central Florida, in Orlando, Florida. The instrument used, Questionnaire of Undergraduates about International Teaching Assistants (QUITA) as developed by Wanda Fox (1990), is composed of a total of 40 items regarding personal and academic background, cultural exposure to and views about non-native speakers of English, and ITA-classroom effectiveness and problem-solving strategies. On the basis of data from the Fall 1998 semester, approximately 15% of the total number of ITA-taught course sections per college were surveyed. The subjects responded anonymously using computerized answer sheets. Upon completion of the data collection phase, all surveys were analyzed for response frequencies. In addition, background and demographic information regarding the participants and information regarding undergraduate exposure to IT As and IT A instruction were also summarized. The Likert-type items were combined to reveal an overall ATITA (Attitude toward International Teaching Assistants) score. The results of the ATITA portion of the study indicate that undergraduate student views toward IT As and IT A instruction are between neutral and mildly positive. Furthermore, survey responses indicated that undergraduates resolve conflicts involving IT As through personal means. The closing recommendations suggest maintaining open lines of communication between undergraduates, ITAs, and administrators alike.

Show moreFlorida Technological University College of Engineering Thesis; The State of Florida has mandated that a statewide 911 system be implemented, and the Department of General Services, Division of Communications, has performed a study of possible 911 system configurations for Orange County based on the findings of a study performed by the Stanford Research Institute for the whole of the State of Florida. The Orange County study determined operator manning levels of the primary law enforcement agencies involved in the system and response times to citizen calls for each of the configurations proposed. This research generated computer simulation models of the two most likely to be implemented configurations for handling citizen calls. The models were run sing the input parameters defined in the Orange County study, and the results compared favorably. Additional runs were made with varying resource assignments to evaluate call service with respect to the level of performance and response time. The models were designed in modular form, such that they can easily be structured to conform to other operational configurations. This will allow evaluation of prosed systems prior to actual start up and analysis of resource requirements based on population predictions.

Having identified the critical aspects of effective software management, an approach is suggested for the creation and implementation of a software quality assurance program, Particular attention is focused on the concept of Life Cycle Procurement as currently utilized by the Department of Defense. The research was accomplished in two phases. The first consisted of an extensive literature search, seminar attendance and participation in several working groups assigned the responsibility for establishing software quality assurance guidelines. The second phase involved direct participation in the development of a formal software quality assurance program. The report is written in a manner designed to guide a non-technically oriented manager through a complete analysis of software, its measures of quality, its problem sources and the most promising techniques which can he used to control and evaluate its development.

Show moreUniversity of Central Florida College of Engineering Thesis; In order to familiarize local women with advanced degree possibilities in engineering and with expanding loal industry, as well as increasing the graduate enrollment in the College of Engineering, the Univeristy of Central Florida has developed a Reentry Program for Women in the Industrial Engineering Department. Master of Science degrees are offered to the women with four options: Operations Research, Computer Systems, Engineering Administration, and Engineering Systems Analysis. The program is designed for women who received a bachelor's degree at least two years ago in mathematics, engineering, physics, or another hard science. Seed money for the program was obtained as a mini-grant from the Women's Reentry Consortium. The major component of the program is a mathematics review course which offers an intensive review of college math through differential equations. An Industrial Advisory Board is an integral part of the program and is giving support for potential employment of women during their schooling and afterwards, as well as making sure the women are going in directions consistent with the needs of industry. A special orientatioin, available tutoring, and a Professional Development Day are some of the features incorporated in this program. After the math review course, the women are mainstreamed into the standard graduate program with continued support.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Urban Storm Water Runoff Mathematical Model, "STORM," is introduced. Model parameters and methodology are discussed. The mathematical relationships and modeling processes are reviewed and the model is exercised using a "new generation" southeast Florida community (The City of Palm Beach Gardens) as the subject of study. It is concluded that the model can be beneficial in supporting estimates of pollutant loading to receiving waters from nonpoint sources. Iteration with the model, varying control facility cost and capacity, provides a cost effective tool for land and water resource planners. However, due to the particular nature of soils, atmospheric and urban conditions in south Florida, the model should be calibrated with input constants and default values derived to more accurately reflect the southeast Florida environment.

Presently there are many relatively inexpensive oscilloscopes available, but triggered sweep capability is still reserved for those oscilloscopes costing more than 200 - 500 dollars. The goal of this project was to develop a respectably performing triggered sweep system at a low enough cost to allow inclusion of this valuable feature in any oscilloscope. Two of the most important specifications of an oscilloscope are the bandwidth of the vertical amplifier, and the maximum sweep frequency. The broad class of "inexpensive oscilloscope" would include those with a maximum vertical response of 500 KHz to 5 MHz , and a maximum sweep rate of 50 KHz to 500 KHz . Most of these oscilloscopes would not have triggered sweep capability. For about double the cost, the next step upward would be a semi- professional triggered - sweep oscilloscope having a typical vertical response of 1511Hz and a sweep to roughly 2 MHz (500 nsec). Using these classifications as guidelines, a "respectably performing" triggered sweep for inexpensive oscilloscopes may be loosely defined as one having a 500 KHz (2 nsec) sweep, triggerable to at least 5 MHz. Depending on actual cost and application , greater or lesser performance could be considered entirely acceptable. A number of design variations are possible, all of which appear to be a fraction of the cost and complexity of previous designs having comparable specifications . Making this possible are integrated circuits in general, and a modern linear IC "timer" in particular. This report first describes this timer, then uses it as the main element in the generation of a linear ramp. Several trigger and gating circuits are then described. Finally, several of these subcircuits are combined to form three (out of many possible) complete triggered sweep generator systems. As an example of the results, the most expensive circuit costs about 15 dollars in single quantity, yet offers 10 volt per 200 nsec sweep rates, trigger capability from OC to above 15 MHz, trigger level and phase control, and blanking pulse output.

Millimeter wave microstrip antennas have been extensively researched over the past decade. The purposed of this report was to build and test 35 GHz microstrip antennas as well as put into operation a high voltage klystron power supply, Micro-Now Model 756. The antennas were fabricated and tested in the lab and the results obtained are reported. The operation of the Model 756 power supply is also outlined in detail.

The subject matter discusses two applications of solar energy, a "Solar Augmented Heated System" and a "Solar Assisted Heat Pump." The solar augmented system and the solar assisted system have the same components; however, the way they are used is of primary concern. A solar system in parallel with a heat pump is called "Solar Augmented Heating System" or in series with a heat pump is a "Solar Assisted Heat Pump" A 2000 ft2 house was utilized as the basis of the design. The heating load was calculated from the construction materials. With this information the collector area, tank volume and heat pump sizes were determined. Once the system size and design was completed, TRNSYS, a "Transient Simulation Program" was used to simulate the two systems. A comparison was made of the two systems for a 21 day period to determine which of the two systems is more advantageous to use.

This is proven by analyzing and comparing noise-imprints of vehicles at an uncontrolled intersection marked first with a 'stop' sign, and then by a 'yield' and an experimental 'dead slow' sign. By relating the duration of each driving mode to known relations, the overall efficiency of an intersection can be characterized. A new technique for studying various types of traffic conditions at intersections is the result. Initial noise-imprint analysis and comparison shows that a 'yield' sign is to be preferred over a 'stop' sign to decrease travel time, air pollution emissions, gasoline consumption, and wear-and-tear on the car. The experimental 'dead slow' sign is used as a demonstration of the noise-imprint technique upon an unknown situation. The efficiency of a 'dead slow' sign proved to be less than that of a 'yield' sign, but still greater than that of a 'stop' sign.

Show moreFlorida Technological University College of Engineering Thesis; This research report documents the various types of Data Acquisition Systems in use for testing jet aircraft engines. The cost trade offs and design considerations are explored for systems which employ a digital computer as the prime recording/processing element. The digital computer has revolutionalized the data acquisition field, particularly in the testing of high performance jet engines. Test data can be acquired, processed, converted to engineering units, and out via high speed line printers and cathode ray tubes (CRT's). The data acquisition system operates on-line, and interleaves the random requests for data from multiple test cells by using a specially designed software system and multi-processing capability of the high speed digital computer. All test data must be traceable to The National Bureau of Standards, which required that all calibration standards also be traceable. Primary and secondary calibration methods are discussed and examples of the mathematical processes for conversion of the raw data to meaningful results are presented. Data Acquisition Systems for jet engine testing can be logically grouped into two main categories, with the determining factor being the type of test to be conducted. Production engine testing requires rapid setup, calibration, and fast data turn around, particularly for modern automated test facilities. Development engine testing requires a large number of data channels, infrequent setup, and complete software for extensive engine performance calculations. Both types of Data Acquistion Systems have been designed and built by Pratt and Whitney Aircraft and are used as examples of the techniques described in this report.

This thesis points out how one can apply heat pipe technology in the form of a vapor chamber to solve this type of problem. The details on the design and testing of two prototype vapor chambers are cited. Included in the text are typical industrial applications that required sealed enclosures to protect their associated electronic control hardware. Also mentioned is some historical background on heat pipes.

Show moreUniversity of Central Florida College of Engineering Thesis; A desirable goal of military simulation training is to provide large scale or joint exercises to train personnel at higher echelons. To help meet this goal, many of the lower echelon combatants must consist of computer generated forces with some of these echelons composed of units from different simulations. The object of the research described is to correlate the behaviors of entities in different simulations so that they can interoperate with one another to support simulation training. Specific source behaviors can be translated to a form in terms of general behaviors which can then be correlated to any desired specific destination simulation behavior without prior knowledge of the pairing. The correlation, however, does not result in 100% effectiveness because most simulations have different semantics and were designed for different training needs. An ontology of general behaviors and behavior parameters, a database of source behaviors written in terms of these general behaviors with a database of destination behaviors. This comparison is based upon the similarity of sub-behaviors and the behavior parameters. Source behaviors/parameters may be deemed similar based upon their sub-behaviors or sub-parameters and their relationship (more specific or more general) to destination behaviors/parameters. As an additional constraint for correlation, a conversion path from all required destination parameters to a souce parameter must be found in order for the behavior to be correlated and thus executed. The length of this conversion path often determines the similarity for behavior parameters, both source and destination. This research has shown, through a set of experiments, that heuristic metrics, in conjunction with a corresponding behavior and parameter ontology, are sufficient for the correlation of heterogeneous simulation behavior. These metrics successfully correlated known pairings provided by experts and provided reasonable correlations for behaviors that have no corresponding destination behavior. For different simulations, these metrics serve as a foundation for more complex methods of behavior correlation.

Show moreUniversity of Central Florida College of Engineering Thesis; This research addressess emissions of hexavalent chromium mist from hard chromium electroplating operations. Most of these emissions are typically captured by a ventilation stack and directed to a pollution control device; those which escape capture are called fugitive emissions. Releases of toxic materials such as hexavalent chromium must be reported annually to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under provisions of the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) Title III of 1986 via the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI), Form R. The objectives were: (1) to provide estimates of fugitive hexavalent chromium emissions for the completion of Form R; and (2) to develop a predictive model for stack and fugitive emissions versus process and ventilation parameters. The database for stack emissions included published results from EPA studies. Fugitive release data were generated by field characterization at two operating facilities. Supplemental data for stack releases were also obtained during this field activity. The fugitive releases were documented to represent a small portion of the total atmospheric discharge; in most instances, the fugitive releases were less than the detection capability of the smapling/analytical protocols. Stack releases were successfully correlated with a measure of production activity (ampere-hours), production capacity (mass of chromium in the process bath), tank dimensions (plating bath surface area), and ventilation efficiency (ventilation slot area). This effort was supported by the EPA in the form of a cooperative agreement with the American Electropaters and Surface Finishers Society (AESF).
