Show moreLand filling provides a major, safe, and economical disposal route for biosolids and sludges. With an expanding world, the demand for larger and higher capacity landfills is rapidly increasing. Proper analysis and design on such fills have pushed the boundaries of geotechnical engineering practice, in terms of proper identification and assessment of strength and deformation characteristics of waste materials. The engineering properties of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) with co-disposal of biosolids and sludges with regards to moisture characteristics and geotechnical stability are of utmost importance. Significant changes in the composition and characteristics of landfill may take place with the addition of sludges and biosolids. In particular, the stability of waste slopes needs to be investigated, which involves the evaluation of the strength properties of the mixture of the waste and biosolids. This thesis deals with impact of the addition of biosolids on the geotechnical properties of class I landfill as determined from field investigations. The geotechnical properties are evaluated using an in-situ deep exploration test, called the Cone Penetration Test (CPT). CPT provides a continuous log of subsurface material properties using two measuring mechanisms, namely, tip resistance and side friction. The areas receiving biosolids are compared with areas without, to evaluate the effect of landfilling of biosolids. The required geotechnical shear strength parameters (angle of internal friction and cohesion) of MSW and biosolids mixture are determined by correlation with CPT results similar to the procedure followed in evaluating soil properties. The shear strength parameters obtained from the CPT data are then used to study the stability of different slope configurations of the landfill. The slope stability analysis is conducted on the various landfill models using the computer software SLOPE/W. This software was designed for soils but was found to be suitable for modeling landfills, as the waste is assumed to act similar to a cohesionless soil. Based on the field investigations, the angle of internal friction was found to be about 29° and the determination of any cohesion was not possible. It was concluded that the most suitable practical solution to adding biosolids into the landfill was in the form of trenches. From the slope stability study, it was found that the factor of safety reduces significantly with the introduction of biosolids due to a reduction in shear strength and increase in the overall moisture content. From a parametric study, the stability of a 1:2 side slope with an angle of friction lower than about 20° was found to be less than the safe limit of 1.5. In addition, the factors of safety for landfills with trenches extending close to the edges of the slopes were also found to be unsafe and this situation needs to be avoided in practice.

Show moreThe primary objective of this study is to evaluate the clogging potential of installed pervious concrete systems, to analyze rehabilitation techniques and develop construction specifications for the construction of portland cement pervious concrete specific to the state of Florida. Currently, a consistent statewide policy has not been established in reference to credit for storage volume within the voids in pervious concrete and the coarse aggregate base. For this reason a current and updated assessment of pervious pavement is needed to benefit from the advantages of pervious pavement use in low traffic volume areas. Initially by modeling a pervious concrete system in a field laboratory with test cells of typical Florida soil conditions and groundwater elevations and combining these data with field data from multiple sites of long service life, a Florida specific construction methodology has been developed. It is hoped that by developing a more standardized design criteria for pervious pavements in Florida a statewide acceptance of portland cement pervious pavement can be achieved and credit can be earned based on the volume of stored stormwater. This study of field sites was subsequently expanded to include locations in the southeastern United States. Pervious concrete has suffered historically poor support due to a number of factors, including concern about poor long term performance due to clogging of surface pores. Eight existing parking lots were evaluated to determine the infiltration rates of pervious concrete systems that have had relatively no maintenance. Infiltration rates were measured using an embedded single-ring infiltrometer developed specifically for testing pervious concrete in an in-situ state. The average infiltration rates of the pervious concrete that was properly constructed at the investigated sites ranged from 0.4 to 227.2 inches per hour. A total of 30 pervious concrete cores were extracted and evaluated for infiltration rates after various rehabilitation techniques, including pressure washing, vacuum sweeping and a combination of the two methods, have been performed to rehabilitate the infiltration capability of the concrete. By evaluating the effectiveness of these rehabilitation techniques, recommendations have been developed for a maintenance schedule for pervious concrete installations. In most cases it was found that the three methods of maintenance investigated in this study typically resulted in a 200% or greater increase over the original infiltration rates of the pervious concrete cores. It is therefore recommended that as a general rule of thumb one or a combination of these rejuvenation techniques should be performed when the system infiltration rates are below 1.5 inches per hour to maintain the infiltration capability of pervious concrete pavements.

Previous studies indicate that pervious concrete has lower compressive strength capabilities than conventional concrete and will only support light traffic loadings. This thesis investigated prior studies on the compressive strength on pervious concrete as it relates to water-cement ratio, aggregate-cement ratio, aggregate size, and compaction and compare those results with results obtained in laboratory experiments conducted on samples of pervious concrete cylinders created for this purpose. The loadings and types of vehicles these systems can withstand will also be examined as well as the design of appropriate thickness levels for the pavement. Since voids are supposed to reduce the strength of concrete 1% for every 5% voids(Klieger, 2003), the goal is to find a balance between water, aggregate, and cement in order to increase strength and permeability, two characteristics which tend to counteract one another. In this study, also determined are appropriate traffic loads and volumes so that the pervious concrete is able to maintain its structural integrity. The end result of this research will be a recommendation as to the water-cement ratio, the aggregate-cement ratio, aggregate size, and compaction necessary to maximize compressive strength without having detrimental effects on the permeability of the pervious concrete system. This research confirms that pervious concrete does in fact provide a lower compressive strength than that of conventional concrete; compressive strengths in acceptable mixtures only reached 1700 psi. Extremely high permeability rates were achieved in most all mixtures regardless of the compressive strength. Analysis of traffic loadings reinforce the fact that pervious concrete cannot be subjected to large numbers of heavy vehicle loadings over time although pervious concrete would be able to sustain low volumes of heavy loads if designed properly. Calculations of pavement thickness levels indicate these levels are dependent on the compressive strength of the concrete, the quality of the subgrade beneath the pavement, as well as vehicle volumes and loadings.

Laterite soils have the characteristics of losing its shear strength with time and in fully saturated conditions and its properties varies from region to region. The soil property is influenced by the chemical composition and the environment. The binding agent iron oxide in such soils changes its composition with time and in the presence of moisture. Sudden failures of embankments founded of laterite soils which were, otherwise, checked and found to be safe with high factor of safety, have been observed. This study is performed to investigate the stability of embankments with sudden loss of strength with time and when it is fully saturated. The research includes an investigation of the properties of laterite soils around the world, with particular emphasis on Nigeria. Initially, information is gathered from different sources about the strength-based properties of such soils. Previous research in Nigeria is used as a basis for obtaining real-world soil data. Next, stability analyses are performed using SLOPE/W with shear strength parameters for total stress (short-term), effective stress (long-term), and fully saturated soil conditions. A probability analysis is conducted for the fully saturated conditions because of the variability in the input parameters. Three slope configurations (1:1, 2:1, and 3:1) are considered. The study revealed that the laterite soils embankments lose most of its stability over time period and in full saturation soil conditions. Both these conditions significantly compromise the strength of the soil and the related stability of slopes. To consolidate all information, a database of the properties of laterite soils in some localities of Nigeria was created on the geographic information system (GIS), in order provide a quick access to information on laterite soils in Nigeria.

Recent work at the University of Central Florida has focused on the behavior of the mixture of MSW and biosolids. As an increased amount of waste accumulates in these landfills, it creates a new problem the geotechnical stability of landfills. In current literature, classical geotechnical testing methods have been followed to find the strength properties of these landfill materials. Furthermore, geotechnical methods of slope stability analyses have been employed to determine the stability of landfill slopes. As these materials have a high organic content, their strength properties may potentially change with time because of the decay of the organic materials. In the present work, an attempt is made to monitor the change in the geotechnical strength properties of the landfill materials as a function of time. Direct shear tests used for soil testing, with some modifications, were performed on cured compost samples of MSW mixed with biosolids. Geotechnical strength properties of these cured samples were compared to those of an artificially prepared mixture of MSW and biosolids, from the published literature. In addition, direct shear tests are also performed to find the interface properties of a geonet with the cured samples to check the role of a geonet in reinforcing the landfill slopes. A slope stability analysis software SLOPE/W is used to analyze the stability of the landfills. Cohesion is observed to decrease with time while the friction angle increases with time. Stability (the factor of safety against failure) of landfill slopes increases with time due to increased effective stresses and increased friction angle, as the organic material decays. This may result in additional subsidence but an increase in the effective shear strength with time. Based on the interface test results and subsequent slope stability analyses, it is found that the inclusion of a geonet improves the slope stability of a landfill. This could be a potential benefit to the landfill as reinforcement if properly placed. Based on the slope stability analysis on landfills with different slopes, it is concluded that the slope stability of a landfill is improved by keeping the slopes less steep.

In this study, this model is extended to the case of dense sands to analyze the accuracy of the stress-strain behavior. This analysis is based on triaxial test data applied to remolded and compacted sand samples under drained conditions. The laboratory triaxial tests were performed by the Florida Department of Transportation to research the permeability effect in sandy soils compacted up to 95% of maximum unit weight at the optimum moisture content. Each soil sample was tested using different stress paths. In addition, these data were also used to obtain the soil parameters. These soil parameters are used as input data for the Modified Cam Clay Model. Moreover, a computer program in MATLAB was developed based on the MCCM constitutive theory and application in order to predict the stress-strain response for overconsolidated soils under drained condition. Based on observations of the qualitative behavior of these soils, a modification is proposed in this thesis to the original constitutive model to improve the predicted stress-strain behavior. The results of the computer program are typically presented in the deviatoric stress versus shear strain and the stress path plane (deviatoric stress versus mean effective stress). These are the principal plots used for the behavior prediction of soil specimens. Furthermore, the results of the computer program were compared to the laboratory triaxial test data. In general, it is may be concluded that, MCCM with some modification, is applicable to dense sands.

Show moreUse of pervious concrete pavement as a method of stormwater management has shown great promise in previous studies. Reduction in runoff, water quality improvements, and long-term economic benefits are but a few of its many advantages. Regulatory agencies such as the St. Johns River Water Management District require further research into the performance of pervious concrete pavement before granting credits for its use as a best management practice in controlling stormwater. As a part of a larger series of studies by UCF's Stormwater Management Academy, this thesis studies the hydrologic mass balance of pervious concrete pavement in sandy soil common in Florida. In order to conduct this study, a field experiment was constructed at the UCF Stormwater Field Lab. The experiment consisted of three 4-foot tall cylindrical polyethylene tanks with 30-inch diameters. All three tanks were placed into the side of a small embankment and fitted with outlet piping and piezometers. The test tanks were assembled by laying a 6-inch layer of gravel into the bottom of each tank, followed by a layer of Mirafi geofabric, followed by several feet of fine sand into which soil moisture probes were laid at varying depths. Two of the tanks were surfaced with 6-inch layers of portland cement pervious concrete, while the third tank was left with a bare sand surface. Mass balance was calculated by measuring moisture influx and storage in the soil mass. Data collection was divided into three phases. The first phase ran from August to November 2005. Moisture input consisted of normal outdoor rainfall that was measured by a nearby rain gauge, and storage was calculated by dividing the soil mass into zones governed by soil moisture probes. The second phase ran for two weeks in March 2006. Moisture input consisted of water manually poured onto the top of each tank in controlled volumes, and storage was calculated by using probe readings to create regression trendlines for soil moisture profiles. The third phase followed the procedure identical to the second phase and was conducted in the middle of April 2006. Data tabulation in this study faced several challenges, such as nonfunctional periods of time or complete malfunction of essential measuring equipment, flaws in the method of calculating storage in phase one of the experiment, and want of more data points to construct regression trendlines for soil moisture calculation in phases two and three of the experiment. However, the data in all phases of the experiment show that evaporation volume of the tanks with pervious concrete surfacing was nearly twice that of the tank with no concrete. Subsequent infiltration experiments showed that pervious concrete pavement is capable of retaining a portion of precipitation volume, reducing infiltration into the underlying soil and increasing total evaporation in the system.

To aid in understanding soils ability to transmit and store water, soil and hydraulic properties were analyzed for soils in Marion County, Florida, and potential soil amendments. Soil and hydraulic properties were examined for two soil amendments and for the soils in Marion County, Florida, at the South Oak and the Hunter's Trace locations. The hydraulic properties measured were the soil moisture retention curve (SMRC) and saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks). The soil properties measured were the particle-size distribution (PSD) and the specific gravity. From these, the bulk density and porosity were calculated. The SMRC corresponds to the water holding capacities, while the Ks corresponds to the soils ability to transmit water. Both are dependent on the soil properties. The SMRC for the soil amendments and native soils were developed in the laboratory using a Tempe Cell apparatus. In addition, the SMRC was measured in the field at the Hunter's Trace location with time domain reflectometry (TDR) and tensiometer equipment at three depths of 1-ft, 2-ft, and 3-ft over approximate a two month period. The SMRC obtained in the laboratory was compared to two analytical models, Brooks and Corey and van Genuchten, and to the field data. There is a strong correlation between the laboratory, analytical, and field SMRC for both South Oak and Hunter's Trace. In addition, there is a strong correlation between the laboratory SMRC and analytical models for the soil amendments. The Arya and Paris (AP) model, a pedotransfer function, was examined for its accuracy in predicting the SMRC for the soils at South Oak and Hunter's Trace, in addition to the soil amendments. Measuring the SMRC in the lab is a time consuming process; therefore, inferring the SMRC from textural and structural soil properties which are easier measured characteristics would be advantageous.

This study investigated the application of PAM within various treatment systems for a construction site environment. The general concept is to introduce hydraulic principles when placing PAM blocks within an open channel in order to yield high mixing energies leading to high turbidity removal efficiency. The first part of the study observed energy variation using a hydraulic flume for three dissimilar configurations. The flume was ultimately used to determine which configuration would be most beneficial when transposed into field-scale conditions. Three different configurations were tested in the flume, namely, the Jump configuration, Dispersion configuration and the Staggered configuration. The field-scale testing served as both justification of the findings within the controlled hydraulic flume and comprehension of the elements introduced within the field when attempting to reduce the turbidity of stormwater. As a result, the Dispersion configuration proved to be the most effective when removing turbidity and displayed a greater energy used for mixing within the open channel. Consequently, an analysis aid is developed based on calculations from the results of this study to better serve the sediment control industry when implementing PAM blocks within a treatment system. Recommendations are made for modification and future applications of the research conducted. This innovative approach has great potential for expansion and future applications. Continued research on this topic can expand on key elements such as solubility of the PAM, toxicity of the configuration within the field, and additional configurations that may yield more advantageous energy throughout the open channel.

Show moreThis thesis presents a study on the strength properties of the different pervious pavement systems installed at the Stormwater Management Academy field laboratory at University of Central Florida (UCF), Orlando. The strength tests were performed both in the laboratory and in the field. Laboratory testing was conducted to determine the compressive strength and flexural strength of the various pavement surfaces. Evaluation of field pavement performance was performed by comparing the deflection basins using the Falling Weight Deflectometer test on pervious concrete and porous asphalt with conventional impervious concrete and asphalt pavements of similar layer profile and thickness, respectively. From literature and previous work at the academy, it is evident that pervious pavements should not be used to withstand heavy traffic loading. They are mostly used in low traffic volume areas such as parking lots, driveways, walkways and some sub-divisional roads. This research studied the compressive strength and flexural moduli. Also it investigated the relationship between the compressive strength and void ratio, unit weight and volume by carrying out laboratory testing of different pervious pavements such as pervious concrete, porous asphalt, recycled rubber tires, recycled glass and porous aggregate. Different sizes of cylinders and beams were cast in place molds for these laboratory tests. Furthermore, the in-situ resilient moduli of the twenty four pavement sections in our research driveway were back calculated with Modulus 6.0 (Liu, et al., 2001) computer program. The calculated deflection basins were compared to the results obtained from a well known computer program called KENPAVE (Huang, 2004). The design of the requisite pavement layer thickness design was performed by doing hand calculations using American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) method for flexible and rigid pavements and utilizing a Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) computer software known as FPS 19W (Liu, et al., 2006). The structural number for flexible pavements were calculated and tabulated for two different reliability levels (90% and 95%). Traffic loading was estimated in the absence of actual traffic count measurement devices at the field test site. Based on the laboratory testing, the maximum compressive strength of the cored pervious concrete was about 1730 psi. Backcalculated pervious concrete and porous asphalt moduli values were within the specified range discussed in literature. The in-situ modulus of elasticity range for pervious concrete is found to be 740 ÃÂ 1350 ksi, for porous asphalt 300 ÃÂ 1100 ksi, for permeable pavers 45 ÃÂ 320 ksi, for recycled rubber tire 20 ÃÂ 230 ksi, recycled glass pavement 850 ksi and porous aggregate 150 ksi. For low volume traffic loading, the minimum layer thickness was calculated for rigid pavements and it is presented in this study. In conclusion, this research summarizes the result of laboratory and field testing performed at the University of Central Florida Stormwater Management Academy Research laboratory to determine the strength related properties of pervious pavement systems.

In recent years, meshless methods have become a research interest due to the simplicity of using scattered data points. Many types of meshless methods exist stemming from the spectral or pseudo-spectral methods, but the focus of this research involves a meshless method using radial basis function (RBF) interpolation. Radial basis functions (RBF) interpolation is a class of meshless method and can be used in solving partial differential equations. Radial basis functions are impressive because of the capability of multivariate interpolation over scattered data, even for data with discontinuities. Also, radial basis function interpolation is capable of spectral accuracy and exponential convergence. For infinitely smooth radial basis functions such as the Hardy Multiquadric and inverse Multiquadric, the RBF is dependent on a shape parameter that must be chosen properly to obtain accurate approximations. The optimum shape parameter can vary depending on the smoothness of the field. Typically, the shape parameter is chosen to be a large value rendering the RBF flat and yielding high condition number interpolation matrix. This strategy works well for smooth data and as shown to produce phenomenal results for problems in heat transfer and incompressible fluid dynamics. The approach of flat RBF or high condition matrices tends to fail for steep gradients and shocks. Instead, a low-value shape parameter rendering the RBF steep and the condition number of the interpolation matrix small should be used in the presence of steep gradients or shocks. This work demonstrates a method to capture steep gradients and shocks using a blended RBF approach. The method switches between flat and steep RBF interpolation depending on the smoothness of the data. Flat RBF or high condition number RBF interpolation is used for smooth regions maintaining high accuracy. Steep RBF or low condition number RBF interpolation provides stability for steep gradients and shocks. This method is demonstrated using several numerical experiments such as 1-D advection equation, 2-D advection equation, Burgers equation, 2-D inviscid compressible Euler equations, and the Navier-Stokes equations.

In this regard, a general framework tool was developedto evaluate and compare different measurements (e.g., travel tim and emissions) to betterassist decision makers to determine the most effective freight transportation strategy.Additionally, the travel time, level of service and emissions on Florida Strategic IntermodalSystem (SIS) were systematically analyzed using a VISSIM and MOVES simulation todetermine if it can be improved. For the scenarios simulated in this investigation, the inputincluded different patterns with a variety of peak hour volumes, truck percentages, speeds,and number of lanes. Additionally, the various total values of the resultant travel time,emissions and level of service for each SIS corridor were determined and calculated usinga General Linear Model and then tabulated to reveal input patterns. The results showed thata truck platooning lane can significantly reduce the travel time and emissions of trucks. Inthe second part, we proposed using a The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method toevaluate the potential benefits of building a new lane for autonomous trucks. The AHPmethod was developed to include all possible measurements that can assist decision makersto select the best autonomous truck policy. The results of the AHP model showed that thesafety criterion was significantly the most influential perspective per experts' opinions. Theresults showed that experts were more concerned about safety and environmentalconsiderations than the initial cost associated with building a new lane.

The bio-detention system uses Bold & Gold(TM), a type of biosorption activated media (BAM), to remove nutrients from simulated highway runoff and then store the water in underground vaults for infiltration, controlled discharge, and/or irrigation and other non-potable applications. In order to design a bio-detention system, media characteristics and media/water quality relationships are required. Media characteristics determined through testing include: specific gravity, permeability, infiltration, maximum dry density, moisture content of maximum dry density, and particle-size distribution. One of the goals of this experiment is to compare the nitrogen and phosphorous species concentrations in the effluent of BAM to sandy soil for simulated highway runoff. Field scale experiments are done on an elevated test bed that simulates a typical roadway with a swale. The swale portion of the test bed is split into halves using BAM and sandy soil. The simulated stormwater flows over a concrete section, which simulates a roadway, and then over either sod covered sandy soil or BAM. One, one and a half, and three inch storms are each simulated three times with a duration of 30 minutes each. During the simulated storm event, initial samples of the runoff (influent) are taken. The test bed is allowed to drain for two hours after the rainfall event and then samples of each of the net effluents are taken. In addition to the field scale water quality testing, column tests are also preformed on the sandy soil and Bold & Gold(TM) without sod present. Sod farms typically use fertilizer to increase production, thus it is reasonable to assume that the sod will leach nutrients into the soils on the test bed, especially during the initial test runs. The purpose of the column tests is to obtain a general idea of what percentage removals of total phosphorus and total nitrogen are obtained by the sandy soil and Bold & Gold(TM). It is shown that the Bold & Gold(TM) media effluent has significantly lower concentrations of total nitrogen and total phosphorus compared to the effluent of the sandy soil based on an 80% confidence level. The Bold & Gold(TM) has a 41% lower average effluent concentration of total nitrogen than the sandy soil. The Bold & Gold(TM) media has a 78% lower average effluent concentration of total phosphorus than the sandy soil. Using both the column test data in combination with the field scale data, it is determined that the Bold & Gold(TM) BAM system has a total phosphorus removal efficiency of 71%. The removal efficiency is increased when stormwater harvesting is considered. A total phosphorus reduction of 94% is achieved in the bio-detention & harvesting swale system sample design problem.

However, its application in medium and high seismic regions remain limited, particularly for precast columns where connections typically coincide with plastic hinge (PH) regions. Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), characterized by high compressive and tensile strength, and superior bond properties, is a potential material that can mitigate PH damage and enhance load transfer. This research proposes a new and simple damage tolerant precast column connection for use in medium and high seismic regions. The connection laps the column longitudinal reinforcement with footing dowels using a short splice length, a practical concrete cover, no shear reinforcement, and the shifted PH concept to prevent footing damage. Two 0.42-scale precast columns with different shear span ratios were tested under reversed cyclic loading to investigate the proposed connection relative to previously tested cast-in-place specimens. Results showed the connection performed well in shear, developed column longitudinal bars, shifted PH formation above the UHPC connection, and exhibited high lateral capacity and ductility. Twenty-seven pullout and lap splice beams were tested to study the bond of reinforcement in UHPC under different parameters and stress states. Results indicated significant bond strength improvement and splice length reduction compared with conventional concrete. The pullout specimens were simulated using the OpenSees framework to propose reinforcing steel in UHPC bond-slip models where existing studies in the literature were limited. The models were incorporated into the numerical modeling of the precast columns using one-dimensional fiber-section and two-dimensional plane stress nonlinear analyses. Results from the two modeling methods showed good agreement with the experiments, with the calibrated bond-slip models providing a good representation of load transfer in the connection.

However, durability of the bond between FRP composite and concrete has shown degradation under some aggressive environments. Although numerous studies have been conducted on concrete members strengthened with FRP composites, most of those studies have focused on the degradation of FRP material itself, relatively few on bond behavior under repeated mechanical and environmental loading.This thesis investigates bond durability under accelerated environmental conditioning of two FRP systems commonly employed in civil infrastructure strengthening: epoxy and polyurethane systems. Five environments were considered under three different conditioning durations (3 months, 6 months, and 1 year). For each conditioning environment and duration (including controls), the following were laboratory tested: concrete cylinders, FRP tensile coupons, and FRP-strengthened concrete flexural members. Numerical investigations were performed using MSC MARC finite element software package to support the outcomes of durability experimental tests. Precise numerical studies need an accurate model for the bond between FRP and concrete, a linear brittle model is proposed in this work that is calibrated based on nonlinear regression of existing experimental lap shear data.Results of tensile tests on FRP coupons indicate that both epoxy and polyurethane FRP systems do not degrade significantly under environmental exposure. However, flexural tests on the FRP strengthened concrete beams indicate that bond between FRP and concrete shows significant degradation, especially for aqueous exposure. Moreover, a protective coating suppresses the measured degradation. Also, experimental load-displacement curves for control beams show excellent agreement with numerical load-displacement curves obtained using the proposed bond model. Finally, a bond-slip model is predicted for concrete leachate conditioned beams by matching load-displacement curves for those beams with numerical load-displacement curves.

Very little research has been performed on the ability to predict the reduction in capacity of bridges in aftershocks. This thesis focuses on providing a way of assessing the reduction in capacity for main-shocks as compared to aftershocks and the effects and importance of both in a bridge. The reduction in capacity was defined using three different ratios: ultimate force, stiffness, and strain energy ratio. The ratios were computed relative to an undamaged state following both the main-shock scenario and the main-shock combined with aftershock scenario. The force, stiffness, and strain energy quantities were obtained from lateral pushover analyses along the two lateral bridge axes. Probabilistic demand models describing the loss in capacity were formulated by pairing intensity measures, based on real ground motions obtained from previous earthquakes, for the main-shock and aftershock with the capacity ratios, obtained from nonlinear dynamic time history analysis. Additionally, the reduction in capacity was conditioned on residual displacement and intensity measure in an attempt to discover the reduction in capacity ratio due to the contribution of residual displacement and therefore separate contributions from geometrical and material nonlinearities. This thesis demonstrates that the usage of strain energy ratio provides a definition of capacity that ultimately provides the best correlation between capacity and intensity measure.

Viable rehabilitation options include replacement of decks with aluminum extrusions, hybrid composite and sandwich systems, precast reinforced concrete systems, or the use of pultruded fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) shapes. Previous research using pultruded glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) decks, focused on behaviour under various strength and serviceability loading conditions. Failure modes observed were specific to delamination of the flexural cross sections, local crushing under loading pads, web buckling and lip separation. However certain failure mechanisms observed from in-situ installations differ from these laboratory results, including behaviour of the connectors or system of connection, as well as the effect of cyclic and torsional loads on the connection.This thesis investigates the role of mechanical and non-mechanical connectors in the composite action and failure mechanisms in a pultruded GFRP deck system. There are many interfaces including top panel to I-beam, deck panel to girder, and panel to panel, but this work focuses on investigating the top panel connection. This is achieved through comparative component level shear, uplift, and flexure testing to characterize failure and determine connector capacity. Additionally, a connection of this GFRP deck system to a concrete girder is investigated during the system-level test. Results show that an epoxy non-mechanical connection may be better than mechanical options in ensuring composite behaviour of the system.

Stormwater runoff can carry pollutants and sediments which can cause both physical and biological risks in an aquatic ecosystem such as a lake, river, or pond. Polymers, namely the chitosan-based dual polymer system, can be used remove the sediment from this runoff to ensure the safety of the state's water bodies. Three soils are used in this testing: AASTO soil classifications A-3(sandy soil) and A-2-4 (silty-sand), and a soil with a fine-grained limerock component. An optimum dose of the chitosan-based dual polymer system is first determined using jar testing. The optimum dose is the dose that reduces the final turbidity to 29 NTUS or below and creates significant flocs. The under dose and over dose are calculated based on the optimum dose. Using these dosages, field scale tests are conducted using two different treatment methods: a semi-passive treatment method and a passive treatment method. Whole effluent toxicity and residual chitosan tests are then conducted on the effluent from the field scale treatment methods. The passive treatment method is the best field scale treatment method when using the silty-sand and the soil with a fine-grained limerock component. The semi-passive treatment method is the best field scale treatment method when using the sandy soil. The passive treatment method with the silty-sand achieves a final turbidity of 123.9 NTUS (88.45% removal). The passive treatment method with the soil with a fine-grained limerock component achieves a final turbidity of 132 NTUS (83.86% removal). The semi-passive treatment method with the sandy soil achieves a final turbidity of 31.43 NTUS (82.04% removal). There is only significant toxicity associated with the tests using the effluent from the passive treatment method with the soil with a fine-grained limerock component which only uses the cationic polymer.

Sinkholes in Central Florida are formed by a combination of bedrock weathering and overburden soil erosion due to the groundwater recharge and are a part of Florida's past and future geology. The initial stage of a sinkhole is referred to as soil raveling and is the most effective time to perform soil improvement measures, such as grouting, to mitigate further expansion of a subterranean void. Subsurface exploration tests, commonly implemented by geotechnical engineers for site characterization, have been shown to detect these sinkhole anomalies even when no signs of subsidence are evident on the ground surface. Secondary geophysical testing has also been proven to detect sinkhole raveling anomalies, but at the expense of additional time and money added to the specific project. In this study, current practices in detecting premature sinkholes were expanded upon with a primary focus on Cone Penetrometer testing data (CPT). Cone Penetrometer tests provide valuable high-resolution quantitative information regarding the discrete strength characteristics of relatively loose sandy and clayey subsoil. CPTs are also much quicker and cleaner to perform when compared to other subsurface testing procedures (e.g. Standard penetration tests). Therefore, CPTs were chosen for this study to understand how they can be implemented to assess risk of future sinkhole collapse, or other karst construction concerns, in Central Florida specific soils. By implementing the findings presented in this report, Geotechnical engineers and contractors in central Florida will be able to practically evaluate the size and severity of potential forming sinkhole without the use of additional subsurface geophysical testing. The results of this study hope to eliminate extraneous testing costs, as well as maximize the efficiency of estimating mitigation products and procedures required all while still ensuring a safe design in Central Florida's highly karst areas.
