Show moreOne of the most salient features of contemporary Spanish fiction is the solid participation of women in literary creation, particularly that of novels. While in the 1970s there were isolated figures, in the 80s and with the consolidation of democracy, the number grew sharply; in the 90s, they multiplied their presence and their quality continues to be outstanding. In spite of the prejudices of sexist power, a good segment of the critics accepts that today a wider and more valuable group of female novelists has been capable of constructing themes, techniques and discourses differing from the predominant one. It is not about claiming that there exists an incompatibility between male and female literature, nor that there are two literatures; rather, it is about the development of individual strategies of permanence and about the persistence of different perspectives within the same human activity. In order to understand the argument raised, chapter I of the present work is set historically in Spain following the fall of the Franco dictatorship, the context of literature and the birth of the new narrative. It is not only within the local national frame that postmodern narrators are involved. It becomes just as important to consider the fall of old regimes throughout the world, the end of the Cold War and the death of communism, on one side; on the other, the phenomenon of economic globalization and the unavoidable transnational vision of cultural movements, which elements travel across the oceans and meet in a discourse about "the end of utopias." Within this framework, female writers have had the incentive of the advent of democracy in Spain, its social consequences, the social acquiescence of "la Movida" and the progress of the conquers of women. The process of cultural change in Spain is being analyzed from the field of cultural studies. However, and serving as a portrait of postmodern fragmentary thought, it is now possible to inscribe a generation of writers that have incorporated elements of audiovisual language and rock music, as well as other elements of popular culture as fundamental substance for fiction, which demands for a new critical reflection. This group has been convened under the label of Generation X. Within this emerging generation, emphasis will be made on the consolidation of female writers in the Spanish cultural setting of the XXI century. Chapter II will delve into the new literary spaces in Spain, their recent legacy, clashing points of views of literary critics and the referential frame of postmodern philosophical thought, all which is conjugated with the appearance of third-wave feminism. Chapter III analyzes the novel Veo Veo, by Gabriela Bustelo, and how it relates to the theoretical postulates of new feminism. The study of the text finds a relationship between the various perspectives taken by the narrator-protagonist in the process of searching for her identity and constructing the female subject according to difference feminism. Finally, this approach to one of the texts and one of the authors of the wide spectrum of contemporary Spanish female writers, attempts to expose that through their innovating fiction and the preponderant role and attention given to their female characters, a contribution is made from literature towards the reflections on the multiple ways in which the female subject paves its way across patriarchal society.

This work exposes the narrative silence as the main enunciator of the textual discourse in Juan Rulfo's novel, Pedro Paramo. Through a sociological reading, the literary silences comprised in the events are interpreted to access one of the multiple possible meanings of the story. The study inserts ideas, historical facts and human, social, psychological and material factors in the openings left by the author, thus producing a discourse that shapes the manifesto of contemporary life.

Show moreSocial, political, and economic transformations contributed to redefine gender roles at the beginning of the twentieth century. In Latin America, Alfonsina Storni (1889-1938), Gabriela Mistral (1892-1957) and Silvina Ocampo (1906-1993) produced a hybrid narrative that challenged heteronormative conventions. In dialogue with a global realignment, they advocated for the rights of mestiza, indigenous, and working class subjects. This thesis proposes that the authors participated in a worldwide transformation that established women as historical agents. The research incorporates poems, essays, and short stories to map the emergence of independent, clever, and ambiguous models of femininity. They deployed traditional archetypes, such as the Virgin Mary, and modern subjectivities to contest the social norms that underpin patriarchy. Storni, Mistral, and Ocampo transgressed and redefined social hierarchies inherited from intellectual elites representing underprivileged populations. We observe a crosspollination of journalism and literature that includes corporeal and mystical elements. These authors actively fought for gender equality and became influential cultural producers. Mistral, for instance, was the first Latin American writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Their achievements inspire and encourage contemporary Latino women to challenge social norms and become cultural producers.

Show moreLexical variation, or the existence of multiple lexemes that can be used to denote a particular concept, is a phenomenon characteristic of most of the world's language systems. Often times the source of this variation is difficult to determine, with a variety of inter- and intra-linguistic factors at play. This thesis was conducted with three main goals: 1) to delineate lexical items typical to specific dialects of Spanish and generate country-specific word lists that focus on salient contrasts between the different varieties of the language; 2) to determine whether speakers of particular varieties of Spanish, namely Puerto Rican and Venezuelan Spanish, were able to recognize lexical items that are supposedly characteristic of their dialect in particular; 3) to examine how dialectal variation can affect linguistic processing. The first part of this investigation examined the relative frequency of use of 1,903 dialectal words in the 22 countries contained within Corpus de Referencia del Espa(&)#241;ol Actual, or CREA, (REAL ACADEMIA ESPA(&)#209;OLA, 2008). Of these 1,903 words, total of 320 were found to be characteristic of a particular variety of Spanish. The lexical items that demonstrated significant correlation with Puerto Rican and Venezuelan Spanish were then used to develop a picture naming task in which participants were asked to designate whether a particular lexical item constituted an appropriate label for the image depicted. The results from this study suggest that speakers of these two dialects were unable to distinguish words as pertaining to their variety in particular, regardless of the supposed high frequency of use within their dialect. The present study thus theorizes that the processing of these dialectal lexical items is closer to monolingual models rather than bilingual models as bilingual-like behaviors were not observed.

Show moreThis is a study about Mar(&)#237;a de Zayas y Sotomayor, a seventeenth century Spanish writer who has slowly but surely started to become one of the most read and researched female writers of her time among current scholars. Zayas's work is that of a baroque writer and as such her critics are notorious for having divergent views about her work. The purpose of this study is to discern the reason behind the controversy that exists about her narrative. The present study is an attempt to elucidate the ambiguity around the feminist views Zayas has been adjudicated. Taking into consideration her context as a female writer amidst a patriarchal society and her social status as a member of the nobility, this study analyses some of the apparent contradictions that critics underscore to support their conclusions. It has been the purpose of this study to include a diverse group of critical views in order to come to a conclusion about her literary opus: her only known dramatic play La traici(&)#243;n en la amistad followed by her two collections of short stories Novelas amorosas ejemplares and Desenga(&)#241;os amorosos. Additionally, this study considers other realms of study that would benefit from a more profound study by future researchers.

Part one examined the communication that occurs between Hispanic immigrant parents and their adolescents/young adults about life in the United States (U.S.). It also examined how attitudes toward the U.S. and various protective factors influence psychological adjustment. Hispanic immigrants (n = 123) with an average of 11 years living in the United States and their adolescents/young adults between the ages of 14-22 served as participants. For both parents and their adolescents/young adults, favorable attitudes toward the U.S. were associated with improved psychological adjustment. Contrary to prediction, attitudes toward the U.S. did not correlate with quality of life or life satisfaction for either family member. Further, results indicated that among adolescents/young adults, resiliency predicted positive U.S. attitudes, whereas among parents, openness to new experiences predicted favorable attitudes toward the U.S. Finally, parental views of the U.S. correlated positively with their adolescents'/young adults' views of the U.S. In an extension of the study, 37 Hispanic college students who were either immigrants or children of immigrants were randomly assigned to either a control condition or a psychoeducation condition. The psychoeducation condition focused on improving their emotional regulation and views of the United States. No significant differences were found among the groups.
