Show moreUpper gastrointestinal symptoms can be caused by many different diseases and can present themselves in many different forms and range in intensity depending on the person. In previous research, upper gastrointestinal symptoms have been correlated with stress, smoking, alcohol intake, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), among others. The purpose of this study will be focusing on finding any association between these risk factors mention and symptoms of upper gastrointestinal disease among college students. The study will utilize an Izumo scale questionnaire for the assessment of abdominal symptoms and Quality of Life (QOL). The questionnaire was built using Survey Monkey and distributed via email to students at the University of Central Florida (UCF). The main hypothesis was that the more the student's advancement in their college career, stress load, alcohol consumption, smoking, poor diet and a high consumption of some over the counter medication (specifically Non-Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs), the more prone the students will be to present symptoms of upper gastrointestinal disease. The results were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS), and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used to find any associations. The One-Way ANOVA tests showed an association between gender, ethnicity, student status, major, cigarette smoking habits, alcohol consumption, binge drinking, diet, stress, sleeping, and overall health. The results of this study present clear evidence that among college students, their demographics as well as lifestyle and school choices have significant associations to the amount of gastrointestinal symptoms they present with.

The study sampled from a population of students, faculty, and staff at the University of Central Florida. Through the implantation of a cross-sectional ecological design, differences between the two groups were measured with a survey that measures health-related quality of life, such as the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). The SF-36 questionnaire was distributed to subjects through a campus-wide email system and was administered through Qualtrics, an online survey program. Literature suggests lower SF-36 scores for individuals suffering from arthritis, but is lacking in investigating the effect of arthritis on college-aged students, particularly within the 18-24 age group. The study aims to close this gap in the literature. SPSS software was used to analyze results through tests of association, like ANOVA, which measured differences in the SF-36 scores of subjects with physician-diagnosed arthritis and subjects without physician-diagnosed arthritis. Results showed a significant difference in the HR-QOL scores between individuals with arthritis and individuals without arthritis, as well as age, gender, ethnicity, and the presence of joint pain.

Show moreAngle-closure glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in the United States and around the world. New research has indicated that intraocular pressure is not the only risk factor associated with glaucomatous optic neuropathy. In recent years, a vascular deregulation in ocular blood flow has been considered a possible risk factor in glaucoma. A laser peripheral iridoplasty is a standard treatment option in non-pupillary block angle-closure glaucoma. The present study employed a secondary retrospective design and utilized patient's data from an ophthalmologist's practice. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of laser peripheral iridoplasty on pulsatile ocular blood flow in primary angle-closure glaucoma and primary angle-closure suspects. A sample of 30 eyes from 17 patients was analyzed for this study. A significant increase in pulsatile ocular blood flow was found among primary angle-closure suspects. Additional data analysis was performed through SPSS software to examine the effect on these variables by age, sex and medical history as a total sample and in each group. Primary angle-closure suspects who were 51-60 years old showed a significant increase in intraocular pressure after laser treatment, however, primary angle-closure glaucoma patients who were 71-80 years old showed a significant decrease in intraocular pressure. Furthermore, a significant increase in pulsatile ocular blood flow was found in female subjects among primary angle-closure suspects, supporting the need for gender medicine research. Lastly, the pulsatile ocular blood flow increased significantly among primary angle-closure suspects who were also suffering from cardiovascular disease. Among primary angle-closure glaucoma patients who were suffering from both cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus, a significant decrease in intraocular pressure was observed.

Show moreHelicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a Gram-negative bacterium that infects and resides in the gastric mucosa of humans. Without treatment, H. pylori infection may cause chronic inflammation of the gastric mucosa. This inflammation creates progressive damage to the lining of the stomach and can lead to multiple diseases located in the upper gastrointestinal region. Worldwide prevalence of H. pylori infection is estimated to be close to 50%. H. pylori has been identified as the primary cause of peptic ulcer disease, gastric cancer, and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence and risk factors associated with H. pylori infection among students, faculty, and staff at the University of Central Florida. A cross-sectional design with a convenience sample was implemented to acquire a study population of 60 participants. The sample was analyzed through the use of a twenty question survey and a rapid blood antibody test kit. The infection rate of the sample was 1.75%. Statistically significant results were found for the relationship between age and upper gastrointestinal symptoms. Trends were also noticed between alcohol consumption, stress levels, and upper gastrointestinal symptoms.

Show moreRecently, there has been an increasing interest in high school mathematics education, especially in the teaching and learning of calculus. For example, studies conducted by Bressoud (2010); Judson and Nishimori (2005); Koh and Divaharan (2011); and St. Jarre (2008) all looked at how to improve the understanding of calculus students and what roles the educator must take to ensure that their students are successful. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a significant difference between instruction using computer algebra system (CAS) compared to instruction using the graphing calculator in high school calculus on students' conceptual and procedural understanding. This study explored and compared two different types of instruction based on the use of two different types of technology, CAS and graphing calculator. The total population for this study consisted of 333 students. There were 187 students classified as using the graphing calculator and 146 students classified as using CAS. The data for this study were collected from four Advanced Placement (AP) calculus AB courses from high schools in Florida. The study used observations and two sets of calculus tasks in order to gather data. The research questions for this study looked at comparing the grades of students categorized based on the type of instruction received during the learning of calculus. The statistical procedure that was used was a simple one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results indicated that there was no significant difference between the two types of instruction on the students' procedural knowledge, however, there was statistical significance on the students' conceptual understanding in favor of the CAS students. The study introduces a framework on how to obtain information about the effects of different types of instruction on students' understanding of calculus. The results of this study contribute in assisting teachers and future researchers on how to analyze student work in order to obtain information about the students' conceptual and procedural understanding of first semester calculus.
