Show moreU-Mo dispersion and monolithic fuels embedded in Al-alloy matrix are under development to fulfill the requirements of research reactors to use low-enriched molybdenum stabilized uranium alloys as fuels. The system under consideration in this study consisted of body centered cubic (gamma) U-Mo alloys embedded in an Al structural matrix. Significant interaction has been observed to take place between the U-Mo fuel and the Al matrix during manufacturing of the fuel-plate system assembly and during irradiation in reactors. These interactions produce Al-rich phases with physical and thermal properties that adversely affect the performance of the fuel system and can lead to premature failure. In this study, interdiffusion and microstructural development in the U-Mo vs. Al system was examined using solid-to-solid diffusion couples consisting of U-7wt.%Mo, U-10wt.%Mo and U-12wt.%Mo vs. pure Al, annealed at 600°C for 24 hours. The influence of Si alloying addition (up to 5 wt.%) in Al on the interdiffusion microstructural development was also examined using solid-to-solid diffusion couples consisting of U-7wt.%Mo, U-10wt.%Mo and U-12wt.%Mo vs. pure Al, Al-2wt.%Si, and Al-5wt.%Si annealed at 550°C for 1, 5 and 20 hours. To further clarify the diffusional behavior in the U-Mo-Al and U-Mo-Al-Si systems, Al-rich 85.7Al-11.44U-2.86Mo, 87.5Al-10U-2.5Mo, 56.1Al-18.9Si-21.9U-3.1Mo and 69.3Al-11.9Si-18.8U (at.%) alloys were cast and homogenized at 500°C to determine the equilibrium phases of the system. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were employed to examine the phase development in the diffusion couples and the cast alloys. In ternary U-Mo-Al diffusion couples annealed at 600°C for 24 hours, the interdiffusion microstructure consisted of finely dispersed UAl3, UAl4, U6Mo4Al43, and UMo2Al20 phases while the average composition throughout the interdiffusion zone remained constant at approximately 80 at.% Al. The interdiffusion microstructures observed by EPMA, SEM and TEM analyses were correlated to explain the observed morphological development in the interdiffusion zones. The concept of thermodynamic degrees of freedom was used to justify that, although deviations are apparent, the interdiffusion zones did not significantly deviate from an equilibrium condition in order for the observed microstructures to develop. Selected diffusion couples developed periodic bands within the interdiffusion zone as sub-layers in the three-phase regions. Observation of periodic banding was utilized to augment the hypothesis that internal stresses play a significant role in the phase development and evolution of U-Mo vs. pure Al diffusion couples. The addition of Si (up to 5 wt.%) to the Al significantly reduced the growth rate of the interdiffusion zone. The constituent phases and composition within the interdiffusion zone were also modified. When Si was present in the Al terminal alloys, the interdiffusion zones developed layered morphologies with fine distributions of the (U,Mo)(Al,Si)3 and UMo2Al20 phases. The U6Mo4Al43 phase was observed scarcely in Si depleted regions within the interdiffusion zone. The phase development and evolution of the interdiffusion zone was described in terms of thermodynamic degrees of freedom with minimal deviations from equilibrium.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between perceived organizational support, perceived coworker support, and debriefing on the one hand, and compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress on the other hand in Florida law enforcement, fire, emergency medical services, and dispatch public safety workers. In order to explore the relationships between these constructs, the research questions examined the relationships of the work environment of Florida public safety by administering surveys gauging perceived organizational support, perceived coworker support, psychological resilience, and debriefing activities that the personnel participate in. The Professional Quality of Life: Compassion Satisfaction and Compassion Fatigue Version 5 was also sent out to establish the self-reported levels of compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress. The study found that there were differences in the levels of compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress between the public safety fields. It also found that there was a positive relationship between the presence of perceived organizational support, perceived coworker support, psychological resilience, and debriefing activities on at least one of the constructs of compassion satisfaction, burnout, or secondary traumatic stress within the different public safety fields. This study furthers the literature by being the first study to compare the four different public safety fields in the state of Florida and with regards to those constructs.

Show moreEngineering materials and structures are usually subjected to multiaxial stress states loading due to geometrical effects, residual stresses, or multi-directional loading. Ductile fracture and Extremely Low Cycle Fatigue (ELCF), less than 100 cycles to fail, are two common and co-exist failure modes in many engineering structures. However, the linkage between these two failure modes under multi-axial loading conditions has never been systematically studied. This research summarizes an extensive work of experimental and numerical studies of ductile fracture and ELCF under different stress states for nickel-base superalloy material (")IN718(") under room temperature. Specially designed specimens and tests were used to achieve desired multi-axial loading conditions. Four types of specimens with four different shapes, total of 16 specimens, were tested until complete fracture. Two groups of tests were conducted: (a) round bar specimens with different notches; (b) plane strain specimens. Experimental data of force-displacement curves and strain-life graph were plotted for analysis. The first part of this research focuses on a numerical study of monotonic tensile loading with different stress states. This part of the investigation deeply studies the dependency of the hydrostatic stress (related to stress triaxiality) and the normalized third invariant of the deviatoric stress (related to Lode angle parameter) in plastic behavior and ductile fracture. Constitutive plasticity model proposed by Bai (&) Wierzbicki and the modified Mohr-Coulomb (MMC) ductile fracture model were adapted with several extensions. The plasticity model and ductile fracture criterion were implemented into ABAQUS through a user-defined material subroutine (VUMAT). Extensive experimental results are used to calibrate the models. After setting up the parameter optimization during model calibration, the experimental results and numerical simulations were well correlated in both plasticity deformation and fracture initiation. A 3D fracture locus of Inconel 718 was constructed by knowing the strain at fracture, stress triaxiality, and normalized Lode angle of the tested samples. By introducing a suitable element post-failure behavior, not only the fracture initiation but also the fracture propagation modes are successfully predicted in finite element simulations for monotonic loading.The second part extensively investigates ELCF on IN718. The IN718 cyclic plasticity behavior and the Bauschinger effect are studied and simulated using the well-known nonlinear kinematic hardening law by J. L. Chaboche and his co-workers under different strain amplitudes and different stress states. Moreover, the Voc(&)#233; isotropic hardening law was applied in combination with the Bai-Wierzbicki plasticity model. The Bai-Wierzbicki plasticity model was used to capture the effect of different stress states on ELCF based on the stress triaxiality and Lode angle parameters. On the other hand, the modified Mohr(-)Coulomb (MMC) ductile fracture model for monotonic loading was extended by a new damage evolution rule to cover the ELCF regime. A new parameter was introduced to represent the effect of the cyclic loading at ELCF. The new parameter is responsible for capturing the change of non-proportional loading direction between the current stress and the backstress tensors. The model explores the underlying damage and fracture mechanisms through the equivalent plastic strain evolution under cycling loading. Finally, the mechanism linkage between these two failure modes was studied. A comparison between the experimental data and the finite element simulation results (by Abaqus/Explicit) shows very good correlations. In addition, fractographic examinations, analysis, and finite element simulations are presented.

To maintain high ionic conductivity and improve the stability of the electrolyte, layered structures with YSZ outer layers and SCSZ inner layers were designed, along with the referential electrolytes containing pure SCSZ or YSZ. The electrolytes were manufactured by tape casting, laminating, and pressureless sintering techniques. After sintering, while the thickness of YSZ outer layers remained constant at ~30 ?m, the thickness of inner layers of SCSZ for the 3-, 4- and 6-layer designs varied at ~30, ~60 and ~120 ?m, respectively. Selected characterizations were employed to study the structure, morphology, impurity content and the density of the electrolytes. Furthermore, in situ X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction and Raman scattering were carried out to study the phase transition and lattice distortion during long-term annealing at 350 (&)deg;C and 275 (&)deg;C for SCSZ and YSZ, respectively, where the dynamic damping occurred when Young's modulus was measured.In YSZ/SCSZ electrolytes, thermal residual stresses and strains were generated due to the mismatch of coefficients of thermal expansion from each layer of different compositions. They could be adjusted by varying the thickness ratios of each layer in different designs of laminates. The theoretical residual stresses have been calculated for different thickness ratios. The effect of thermal residual stress on the biaxial flexural strength was studied in layered electrolytes. The biaxial flexure tests of electrolytes with various layered designs were performed using a ring-on-ring method at both room temperature and 800 (&)deg;C. The maximum principal stress during fracture indicated an increase of flexural strength in the electrolytes with layered structure at both temperatures in comparison with the electrolytes without compositional gradient. Such an increase of strength is the result of the existence of residual compressive stresses in the outer YSZ layer. In addition, Weibull statistics of the strength values were built for the layered electrolytes tested at room temperature, and the effect of thermal residual stresses on Weibull distribution was established. The calculation of residual stress present at the outer layers was verified. The high ionic conductivity was maintained with layered electrolyte designs in the intermediate temperature range. It was also established that the ionic conductivity of layered electrolytes exhibited 7% (-) 11% improvement at 800 (&)deg;C due to the stress/strain effects, and the largest improvements in a certain electrolyte was found to nearly coincide with the largest residual compressive strain in the outer YSZ layer.In addition to the study of layered electrolytes, mechanical properties of porous Ni/SCSZ cermet were studied. The anode materials were reduced by 65 wt% NiO (-) 35 wt% SCSZ (N65) and 50 wt% NiO (-) 50 wt% SCSZ (N50) porous ceramics in the forming gas. Young's modulus as well as strength and fracture toughness of non-reduced and reduced anodes has been measured, both at room and high temperatures. High temperature experiments were performed in the reducing environment of forming gas. It was shown that while at 700 (&)deg;C and 800 (&)deg;C the anode specimens exhibited purely brittle deformation, a brittle-to-ductile transition occurred at 800 (-) 900 (&)deg;C, and the anode deformed plastically at 900 (&)deg;C. Fractography of the anode specimens were studied to identify the fracture modes of the anodes tested at different temperatures.

Along with the more overt symptoms of PTSD (e.g., persistent hyperarousal), secondary cognitive symptoms have also been shown to be significantly associated with avoidance and intrusive symptoms, as well as contribute to functional impairment. Based on the factor analytic and treatment literature for PTSD, it appears that there are two central mechanisms associated with beneficial therapeutic change that underlies both CPT and PE treatments (i.e., habituation, changes in cognitions). Additionally, different traumatic events and peritraumatic responses may be associated with unique symptom profiles and may necessitate targeted treatment. The present study proposes a novel approach to treatment matching based on the factor structure of PTSD and underlying mechanisms of treatment response. More broadly, this paper provides evidence for a broader understanding of peritraumatic responses and the potential implications of these responses for symptom profiles and illness trajectories.

In near equiatomic NiTi, Ti rich compositions can exist near room temperature as a monoclinic B19' martensitic phase, which when deformed undergoes twinning resulting in strains as large as 8%. Upon heating, the martensite transforms to a cubic B2 austenitic phase, thereby recovering the strain and exhibiting the shape memory effect. Ni rich compositions on the other hand can exist near room temperature in the austenitic phase and undergo a reversible martensitic transformation on application of stress. Associated with this reversible martensitic transformation are macroscopic strains, again as large as 8%, which are also recovered and resulting in superelasticity. This work primarily focuses on neutron diffraction measurements during loading at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Three phenomena were investigated: First, the phenomena of hysteresis reduction and increase in linearity with increasing plastic deformation in superelastic NiTi. There is usually a hysteresis associated with the forward and reverse transformations in superelastic NiTi which translates to a hysteresis in the stress-strain curve during loading and unloading. This hysteresis is reduced in cold-worked NiTi and the macroscopic stress-strain response is more linear. This work reports on measurements during loading and unloading in plastically deformed (up to 11%) and cycled NiTi. Second, the tension-compression stress-strain asymmetry in martensitic NiTi. This work reports on measurements during tensile and compressive loading of polycrystalline shape-memory martensitic NiTi with no starting texture. Third, a heterogeneous stress-induced phase transformation in superelastic NiTi. Measurements were performed on a NiTi disc specimen loaded laterally in compression and associated with a macroscopically heterogeneous stress state. For the case of superelastic NiTi, the experiments related the macroscopic stress-strain behavior (from an extensometer or an analytical approach) with the texture, phase volume fraction and strain evolution (from neutron diffraction spectra). For the case of shape memory NiTi, the macroscopic connection was made with the texture and strain evolution due to twinning and elastic deformation in martensitic NiTi. In all cases, this work provided for the first time insight into atomic-scale phenomena such as mismatch accommodation and martensite variant selection. The aforementioned technique of neutron diffraction for mechanical characterization was also extended to engineering components and focused mainly on the determination of residual strains. Two samples were investigated and presented in this work; first, a welded INCONEL 718 NASA space shuttle flow liner was studied at 135 K and second, Ti-6Al-4V turbine blade components were investigated for Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation. Lastly, also reported in this dissertation is a refinement of the methodology established in the author's masters thesis at UCF that used synchrotron x-ray diffraction during loading to study superelastic NiTi. Show moreThis thesis is about the design, development and integration of an in-situ compression stage which interfaces through the Leica optical microscope coupled with a Renishaw InVia micro-Raman spectrometer. This combined compression stage and Raman system will enable structural characterization of ceramics and ceramic composites. The in-situ compression stage incorporates a 440C stainless steel structural components, 6061 aluminum frame, a NEMA 23 stepper motor. Two load screws that allow to apply compressive loads up to 14,137 N, with negligible off axis loading, achieving target stresses of 500 MPa for samples of up to 6.00 mm in diameter. The system will be used in the future to study the structural changes in ceramics and ceramic composites, as well as to study thermal residual stress redistribution under applied compressive loads. A broad variety of Raman active ceramics, including the traditional structural ceramics 3mol%Y2O3-ZrO2, B4C, SiC, Si3N4, as well as exotic materials such as LaCoO3 and other perovskites will be studied using this system. Calibration of the systems load cell was performed in the configured state using MTS universal testing machines. To ensure residual stresses from mounting the load cell did not invalidate the original calibration, the in-situ compression stage was tested once attached to the Renishaw Raman spectrometer using LaCoO3 ceramic samples. The Raman shift of certain peaks in LaCoO3 was detected indicative of the effect of the applied compressive stress on the ceramics understudy.

Show moreThe rise of research on workplace mistreatment in the past twenty years can be attributed to the realization that workplace mistreatment is associated with a host of deleterious outcomes for both the individual targets of the mistreatment and the organizations in which they work. However, the extant literature is failing to capture the full range of sex-based mistreatment that people may experience through a tendency to focus solely on sexual harassment and sex discrimination, which are very specific types of behavior based on one's sex and gender stereotypes. In this dissertation, I introduce the construct of Not Woman Enough Harassment, or the extent to which women perceive that they are treated unfavorably because they do not meet traditionally held stereotypes of femininity. A scale was developed and validated in order to measure this type of harassment, and a model from antecedent to outcome was proposed. Results demonstrated that not woman enough harassment was experienced by approximately 32.5% of the sample. The scale showed good psychometric properties, with two distinct factors of harassment based on physical and non-physical traits. Not woman enough harassment was demonstrated to be distinct from other forms of sexual and workplace harassment. Discomfort with gender norm conformity and masculine physical and non-physical expression were shown to be antecedents of not woman enough harassment, along with a moderating effect of job gender context. In addition, not woman enough harassment significantly predicted decreased job satisfaction, affective organizational commitment, and task performance and increased withdrawal and job stress. Similar patterns were found for males with not man enough harassment.

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) achieve this through a ceramic coating applied to a substrate material (nickel-based superalloy). Electron-beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) is the industry standard coating used on jet engines. By tailoring the microstructure of an emerging deposition method, Plasma-spray physical vapor deposition (PS-PVD), similar microstructures to that of EB-PVD coatings can be fabricated, allowing the benefits of strain tolerance to be obtained while improving coating deposition times. This work investigates the strain through depth of uncycled and cycled samples using these coating techniques with synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD). In the TGO, room temperature XRD measurements indicated samples of both deposition methods showed similar in-plane compressive stresses after 300 and 600 thermal cycles. In-situ XRD measurements indicated similar high-temperature in-plane and out-of-plane stress in the TGO and no spallation after 600 thermal cycles for both coatings. Tensile in-plane residual stresses were found in the YSZ uncycled PS-PVD samples, similar to APS coatings. PS-PVD samples showed in most cases, higher compressive residual in-plane stress at the YSZ/TGO interface. These results provide valuable insight for optimizing the PS-PVD processing parameters to obtain strain compliance similar to that of EB-PVD. Additionally, external cooling methods used for thermal management in jet engine turbines were investigated. In this work, an additively manufactured lattice structure providing transpiration cooling holes is designed and residual strains are measured within an AM transpiration cooling sample using XRD. Strains within the lattice structure were found to have greater variation than that of the AM solid wall. These results provide valuable insight into the viability of implementing an AM lattice structure in turbine blades for the use of transpiration cooling.

Challenges exist with additive manufacturing that limits its replacement of conventional manufacturing techniques, most especially a comprehensive understanding of the anisotropic behavior of these materials and how it is reflected in observed tensile, torsional and fatigue mechanical responses. As such, there is a need to understand how the build orientation of as-built additively manufactured metals, affects mechanical performance (e.g. monotonic and cyclic behavior, cyclically hardening/softening behavior, plasticity effects on fatigue life etc.); and to use constitutive modeling to both support experimental findings, and provide approximations of expected behavior (e.g. failure surfaces, monotonic and cyclic response, correlations between tensile and fatigue properties), for orientations and experiments not tested, due to the expensive cost associated with AM. A comprehensive framework has been developed to characterize the anisotropic behavior of as-built additively manufactured metals (i.e. Stainless Steel GP1 (SS GP1), similar in chemical composition to Stainless Steel 17-4PH), through a series of mechanical testing, microscopic evaluation and constitutive modeling, which were used to identify a reduced specimen size for characterizing these materials. An analysis of the torsional response of additively manufactured Inconel 718 has been performed to assess the impact of build orientation and as-built conditions on the shearing behavior of this material. Experimental results from DMLS SS GP1 and AM Inconel 718 from literature were used to constitutively model the material responses of these additively manufactured metals. Overall, this framework has been designed to serve as standard, from which build orientation selection can be used to meet specific desired industry requirements.

This type of failure is predominately seen in small bore piping, which has a nominal diameter of 2 inches and smaller. This thesis addresses the failure prediction analysis of small bore piping, specifically in turbomachinery applications. Performing failure analysis to predict the potential cracking of welds will allow for replacement of the piping during a planned shutdown which in the long term saves money due to costs such as expediting materials, overtime pay, and extended downtime. This analysis uses real-world applications of a chemical plant in Louisiana. The piping analyzed was connected to centrifugal compressors. The data used from these pieces of equipment included the material of construction, the piping schedule, lengths, nominal diameter, and running speeds. Based on research that shows welding the connection point with a full penetration weld greatly increases the life expectancy of the connection, this thesis uses full penetration welds in the analysis. The piping was analyzed using the software ANSYS to perform a finite element analysis, specifically examining the stress due to the induced harmonic forces. It is a common fact that having fewer supports on a vibrating pipe induces greater stresses and strains on the weld connections. Supports installed 12" from the equipment only show one to two ranges of frequencies to avoid compared to the longer piping which has four to five ranges of unacceptable frequencies. Tables are developed to relay acceptable frequencies based on observed stresses of the welds in the model.

While much research is being conducted on school bullying, little has been conducted on workplace bullying. Using data gathered from a 2004 study conducted by the National Opinion Research Center for the General Social Survey, which included a Quality of Work Life (QWL) module for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), linear regressions indicated significant findings. As predicted, workers in lower level occupations, as ranked by prestige scoring developed at National Opinion Research, are more likely to be victimized. Data also suggest that being young, Black, and relatively uneducated may contribute to being bullied in certain situations. Future research is needed to examine influences of socio-economic, legal, and other demographic factors that may predict the chance of being bullied.
