Show moreThe development of compact imaging systems capable of transmitting high-resolution images in real-time while covering a wide field-of-view (FOV) is critical in a variety of military and civilian applications: surveillance, threat detection, target acquisition, tracking, remote operation of unmanned vehicles, etc. Recently, optical foveated imaging using liquid crystal (LC) spatial light modulators (SLM) has received considerable attention as a potential approach to reducing size and complexity in fast wide-angle lenses. The fundamental concept behind optical foveated imaging is reducing the number of elements in a fast wide-angle lens by placing a phase SLM at the pupil stop to dynamically compensate aberrations left uncorrected by the optical design. In the recent years, considerable research and development has been conducted in the field of optical foveated imaging based on the LC SLM technology, and several foveated optical systems (FOS) prototypes have been built. However, most research has been focused so far on the experimental demonstration of the basic concept using off the shelf components, without much concern for the practicality or the optical performance of the systems. Published results quantify only the aberration correction capabilities of the FOS, often claiming diffraction limited performance at the region of interest (ROI). However, these results have continually overlooked diffraction effects on the zero-order efficiency and the image quality. The research work presented in this dissertation covers the methods and results of a detailed theoretical research study on the diffraction analysis, image quality, design, and optimization of fast wide-angle FOSs based on the current transmissive LC SLM technology. The amplitude and phase diffraction effects caused by the pixelated aperture of the SLM are explained and quantified, revealing fundamental limitations imposed by the current transmissive LC SLM technology. As a part of this study, five different fast wide-angle lens designs that can be used to build practical FOSs were developed, revealing additional challenges specific to the optical design of fast wide-angle systems, such as controlling the relative illumination, distortion, and distribution of aberrations across a wide FOV. One of the lens design examples was chosen as a study case to demonstrate the design, analysis, and optimization of a practical wide-angle FOS based on the current state-of-the-art transmissive LC SLM technology. The effects of fabrication and assembly tolerances on the image quality of fast wide-angle FOSs were also investigated, revealing the sensitivity of these fast well-corrected optical systems to manufacturing errors. The theoretical study presented in this dissertation sets fundamental analysis, design, and optimization guidelines for future developments in fast wide-angle FOSs based on transmissive SLM devices.

Show moreProject CHILDî (Changing How Instruction for Learning is Delivered) provides an avenue for educational change using a triangulated approach. Using data from the Florida Department of Education, this research studies the Project CHILDî learning approach on preparing students for success on portions of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCATî) using results from fifteen charter schools in the state of Florida, seven participating in Project CHILDî and eight non-participating charter schools for the 2008-2009 school-year. Dispersion statistics such as range and standard deviation as well as independent t tests are computed to compare the percentage of students in grades three to five scoring levels 3 and higher on the reading and mathematics portions, and fourth grade students scoring a 3.5 or higher on the writing assessment of the FCATî. Project CHILDî schools had smaller ranges and standard deviations in the majority of the comparisons. Descriptively, this suggests that students in the Project CHILDî schools are performing closer to the school average. There were no statistically significance differences between the Project CHILDî schools and non-Project CHILDî schools for grade level comparisons, nor on any grade level aggregate outcomes (i.e., grades 3-5 school FCATî reading, mathematics, or writing mean). However moderate effect sizes were seen for reading in grade four and writing assessments in grade four. The non-statistically significant findings were likely due to low power, and the moderate effect sizes suggest evidence of practical significance.

Though middle-aged and older workers may potentially enjoy the greatest physical, stress and cognitive benefits from regular exercise, workplace wellness programs have been less successful in attracting such employees. This study developed and tested a 6-week exercise motivation intervention designed to meet the needs of sedentary, older working adults and to determine what non-physical benefits might result from increased levels of physical exercise. The intervention, based primarily on Self-Determination Theory, included feedback on individually-made, realistic, process-specific exercise goals that and provided guidance from knowledgeable exercise professionals in addition to support group of socially-similar individuals to aid in coping and adherence. The intervention was built and delivered entirely online to fit better with the sample's considerable time demands. The motivational intervention was delivered to a sample of 30 mostly-older working adults and was successful in significantly improving activity levels and overall affect while decreasing stress. No significant differences were detected in measures of personal resources, work engagement, work effort and task performance. The implications and recommendations for future research are discussed.

The results of my research will provide the reader with the ability to connect existing philosophies of the Yoga Sutras and Jungian Theory with new art works that explore active meditation, neurosis, and the archetypes of the collective psyche. My goal is to reconstruct these concepts into a visual medium that reshapes facts and theories into images of my own truth, giving free play to fantasy akin to that of magical realism by detailing works from Corrupted Chakras: A Bestiary, You Want Alchemy, and the State of Mind: Chitta Vritti series. The reader and viewer will be challenged to think about how the art I make resynthesizes these concepts in a unique way, which communicate my feelings and strivings that ultimately affect a measure of personal and creative transformation.

Show moreCoherent infrared radiation sources are essential for the operability of a wide range of scientific, industrial, military and commercial systems. The importance of the mid-infrared spectral region cannot be understated. Numerous molecules have some vibrational band in this range, allowing for identification of species by means of absorption, emission or some other form of spectroscopy. As such, spectroscopy alone has numerous applications ranging from industrial process control to disease diagnosis utilizing breath analysis. However, despite the discovery of the LASER in the 60s, to this day the amount of coherent sources in this range is limited. It is for this reason that the quantum cascade laser has gained such momentum over the past 23 years.Quantum Cascade LASERS (QCL) are semiconductor LASERS which are based on the principle of bandgap engineering. This incredible technique is a testament to the technological maturity of the semiconductor industry. It has been demonstrated that by having precise control of individual material composition (band gap control), thicknesses on the order of monolayers, and doping levels for each individual layer in a superlattice, we have unprecedented flexibility in designing a LASER or detector in the infrared. And although the technology has matured since it's discovery, there still remain fundamental limitations on device performance. In particular, active region overheating limits QCL performance in a high duty cycle mode of operation.In this dissertation, along with general discussion on the background of the QCL, we propose a solution of where by limiting the growth of the superlattice to a fraction of typical devices, we allow for reduction of the average superlattice temperature under full operational conditions. The consequences of this reduction are explored in theory, experiment and system level applications.

Show moreABSTRACTCardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for U.S. adults. It adds greater than $100 billion to U.S. health care costs annually. Rates of morbidity, mortality, and economic burden of the disease could be dramatically reduced with improvements in sedentary behaviors among adults with coronary artery disease (CAD). A regular commitment to moderate physical activity can reduce ischemic heart events up to 50%. Although the benefits of physical activity are well-known for individuals with coronary artery disease, an estimated 70% of this population remains relatively sedentary. Hospital-based cardiac rehabilitation programs are the single secondary prevention option offered to improve physical activity habits in persons with CAD. Although effective, cardiac rehabilitation is inaccessible for the majority of CAD sufferers and is offered only after an acute cardiac event. Different from rehabilitation, prehabilitation (prehab) programs use physical activity as a means to deter a worsening condition or prevent injury before an acute event occurs. These programs have proved successful in other areas of medicine but there are currently no such secondary prevention programs available for stable persons with CAD in the U.S. A home-based prehab program could help adults with CAD establish improved physical activity habits and circumvent many of the barriers associated with admission and attendance of a hospital-based cardiac rehabilitation program. Researchers have indicated that self-efficacy is key to initiation and sustentation of a regular physical activity habit, regardless of the physical activity program that one attends. These habits are more likely to last when participants receive self-efficacy based support for an average of 66 days. The purpose of this study was to determine if a nurse-practitioner-led, home-based, prehab program could assist adults with CAD to improve and maintain increased physical activity habits and levels of self-efficacy for physical activity. The five primary facilitators of self-efficacy were used to devise a 10-week prehab program. A convenience sample of 54 adults with diagnosed CAD was recruited from cardiology practices in St. Johns County, Florida. The research population was 68.5% (n=37) male, 88.9% (n=48) Caucasian, and 74% (n=40) married with a mean age of 68.57 years. Participants attended a 90-minute prehab class which offered health education and group discussion of barriers and goals for regular physical activity. Following the class, participants were contacted weekly for 10-weeks to discuss goal progress, assist in circumventing barriers, and revise physical activity goals as needed. After the 10-week call period, participants were contacted 30-days later to assess for physical activity habit maintenance and any sustained benefit in self-efficacy for physical activity. Self-efficacy for exercise was measured before the prehab class, after the prehab class, and after the 10-week intervention period using the Short Self-Efficacy Expectations scale (SSEE), Multidimensional Outcomes Expectations for Exercise Scale (MOEES), and the Barriers Self-Efficacy Scale (BARSE). All baseline measures of self-efficacy (MOEES, BARSE, SSEE) improved significantly immediately following the prehab class. Baseline physical outcome expectations of the MOEES (m=21.87, sd=4.67), self-evaluative outcome expectations of the MOEES (m=16.70, sd=4.15) and SSEE (m=12.75, sd=4.02) remained significantly improved after the 10-week intervention period (p(<).05). At the 10-week assessment, mean significant self-efficacy scores were 24.39 (sd=1.26, p(<).01) for physical outcome expectations, 18.39 (sd=2.27, p(<).02) for self-evaluative outcome expectations, and 15.06, (sd=3.25, p(<).001) for SSEE. The SSEE was reassessed 30-days after the study and remained significantly improved compared to baseline (m=15.65, sd=3.42, p(<).01). Qualitative data collection coincided with the quantitative self-efficacy findings. Participants reported satisfaction with physical activity goal attainment and increased confidence to continue with a regular physical activity plan. The Godin Leisure-Time Exercise Questionnaire (GLTEQ) was used to assess activity levels at baseline, during each weekly phone call, at the end of 10-weeks, and 30-days after the study. Repeated-measures ANOVA (F (2,90) = 21.86, p(<).001) revealed that participant's baseline physical activity volume measured by GLTEQ (m=18.39, sd= 16.93) improved significantly after 10 weeks in the prehab study (m=41.10, sd=24.11, p(<).001) and remained significantly improved when re-measured 30-days after the study (m=39.02, sd=21.87, p(<).001). Qualitative data concurred with quantitative data with participants reporting physical activity habit formation and maintenance of self-regulatory skills. Qualitative data also demonstrated that participants in prehab experienced very similar facilitators and barriers compared to other adults with CAD attempting an exercise program. In summary, the prehab study findings coincided with other research findings in this area. Self-efficacy based support can assist individuals with CAD to improve and maintain physical activity habits. The ease of the intervention likely contributed to lower cost and attrition rates (7%) compared to hospital-based cardiac rehabilitation programs. Although more research is needed, study findings suggest that a nurse-practitioner-led, home-based program could be a viable secondary prevention strategy for stable adults with CAD. This should be considered for the future given that even modest improvements in physical activity can substantially reduce all-cause mortality in this population.

Show moreResearch in writing studies has focused on students who make the traditional transition from high school to first year composition, to the entry level discipline specific courses in their chosen majors (Wardle, 2007, 2009; Sommers and Saltz, 2004; Beaufort, 2007; Carroll, 2002). Very little scholarship addresses those students who (")skip(") first year composition and find themselves in entry level discipline specific courses classrooms. With three former students, I conduct a case study over the course of eight months via a series of face to face, facetime, skype and email interviews. Each of these students, through earning high test scores in high school, forego first year composition and move directly to entry level discipline specific courses. Using third generation activity theory as a lens (Engestr(&)#246;m, 1996, 1999, 2001; Roth and Lee, 2007; Russell, 1995, 1997; Kain and Wardle, 2002), I examine these students' understanding of what they have experienced in high school writing(-)specifically high school English class(-)what they think college writing will demand, and finally what, in fact, they find the college writing demands to be. Not only do I find that each of the students felt very prepared for the demands they will encounter, but they remained confident. The study does, however, illuminate unforeseen challenges for both students and those who teach them: student literate lives are incredibly complex, and there is a real potential for a writing gap between formal writing instruction and when students will engage in intensive discipline writing tasks.

The current research fills this gap in the literature by using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) and by testing Hirschi's (1969) Social Control Theory and Aker's (1985) Social Learning Theory. The current research identified fine art and academic clubs as protective factors for adolescent substance use. There is limited research on the link between adolescent substance use and extracurricular activities and based on my findings that academic and fine arts clubs can decrease the likelihood of substance use, continued research is needed to better identify users, causes for risk and preventative factors, short and long term ramifications, and the theoretical correlations of use.

The achievement gap is a problem because the nation's competitiveness depends on individuals with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) knowledge, skills, and abilities to drive innovation that will lead to new products and economic growth (Business-Higher Education Forum [BHEF]/Act Policy Brief, 2014; National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2016; National Science Board, 2015). If Florida is to continue to grow and prosper, all students, including students with disabilities must be prepared for the economy they will inherit. The purpose of the current study was to determine if informal science learning activities offered in Florida school districts impact students with disabilities (SWD) performance on the 8th Grade Florida science assessment.The researcher posed four research questions. The first research question determined whether a statistically significant difference existed between students with disabilities and their non-disabled peers on the 8th Grade Florida Science Assessment. The researcher found a statistically significant difference of students without disabilities outperforming their peers with disabilities. The second and third research questions were analyzed using survey responses from STEM personnel in each Florida district. The questions evaluated the percentage of SWD who participate in STEM activities. Findings indicated most districts do not track the number of SWD who participate in STEM activities. The third research question determined the type of SWD who participated in STEM activities. The largest category represented in STEM activities was students with learning disabilities. The last research question asked if there was a correlation between the number of STEM activities offered in a district and the results of the 8th Grade Statewide Science Assessment for SWD. Results indicated a small positive correlation. The researcher identified areas for future research, as well as recommendations and implications of the results from the study.

In this study, antimicrobial activity of multiple alternative zinc-based nanoformulations were tested against three important plant pathogens: Xanthomonas alfalfae, Pseudomonas syringae, and Clavobacter michiganensis. Xanthomonas sub species cause Citrus canker, a devastating disease that affects millions of citrus trees worldwide while the latter two affect tomato crops. Materials synthesis was completed and the resulting nanoformulations were characterized by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy, and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. The antimicrobial efficacy of the newly synthesized formulas and two commercially available products, Kocide 3000 (DuPont) and Nordox (Brandt), were determined by Minimum Inhibitory Concentration Assays followed by Bacterial Viability Assays. The subsequent data demonstrated a marketed difference in the way the antimicrobial agents acted upon the bacterial species. The core-shell zinc silica nanoparticles (C-SZnSiNP) proved to be ineffective, while the zinc silica nanogel (ZnSiNG) was as successful at killing the bacteria as the commercial products. This shows promise for a new alternative material with zinc at the forefront of the fight against plant pathogens.

The wastes streams from HZ and MMH have been estimated to be the main hazardous wastes streams at KSC. Currently at KSC these wastes are first neutralized using citric acid and then they are transported on public roads for incineration as hazardous materials. A new method using alpha ketoglutaric acid (AKGA) was proposed to treat HZ and MMH wastes. From the reaction of AKGA with HZ and MMH two stable products are formed, 1,4,5,6-tetrahydro-6-oxo-3-pyridazinecarboxylic acid (PCA) and l-methyl-1,4,5,6-tetrahydro-6-oxo-3-pyridazinecarboxylic acid (mPCA), respectively.The cost of purchasing AKGA is greater than the cost of purchasing citric acid; thus, AKGA can only become a cost effective alternative for the treatment of HZ and MMH wastes if the products of the reactions (PCA and mPCA) can be safely disposed of into the sewage system without affecting the treatment efficiency and effluent quality of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). In this research mPCA and PCA were analyzed for acute toxicity using fish and crustaceans as well as their effect on the wastewater treatment efficiency and viability using AS microbes, and their biodegradability by AS organisms. Acute toxicity on fish and crustaceans was investigated according to the methods for acute toxicity by USEPA (USEPA Method EPA-821-R-02-012) using Ceriodaphnia dubia (96 hours) and Pimephales promelas (96 hours) as the test organisms. The effect of mPCA and PCA in the treatment efficiency and viability were estimated from respiration inhibition tests (USEPA Method OCSPP 850.3300) and heterotrophic plate counts (HPCs). Lastly, the biodegradability of mPCA and PCA was assessed using the Closed Bottle Test (USEPA Method OPPTS 835.3110). For mPCA, the 96 hours LC50 for C. dubia was estimated at 0.77 (&)#177; 0.06 g/L (with a 95% confidence level) and the NOEC was estimated at 0.5 g/L. For P. promelas, the LC50 was above 1.5 g/L but it was noticed that mPCA had an effect on their behavior. Abnormal behavior observed included loss of equilibrium and curved spine. The NOEC on the fish was estimated at 0.75 g/L. PCA did not exhibit a significant mortality on fish or crustaceans. The LC50 of PCA in P. promelas and C. dubia was (>) 1.5 g/L and the NOEC was 1.5 g/L for both organisms. An Inhibitory effect on the heterotrophic respiration of activated sludge organisms was not observed after exposing them for 180-min to PCA and mPCA at concentrations of up to 1.5 g/L compared to the blank controls. Overall the impact of PCA and mPCA on total respiration rates was small, and only observed at 1,500 mg/L if at all. The difference was apparently caused by inhibition of nitrification rather than heterotrophic inhibition. However due to the variability observed in the measurements of the replicates, it is not possible to firmly conclude that PCA or mPCA at 1,500 mg/L was inhibitory to nitrification.Based on the results from the HPCs, mPCA and PCA did not affect the viability of heterotrophic organisms at 750 mg/L. In the BOD-like closed bottle test using a diluted activated sludge mixed liquor sample, the AS microorganisms were capable of biodegrading up to 67% of a 2 mg/L concentration of PCA (with respect to its theoretical oxygen demand, or ThOD) in 28 days. No biodegradation was observed in the samples containing 2 and 5 mg/L of mPCA after 28 days of incubation using a diluted activated sludge mixed liquor sample as inoculum.The results of this study show that mPCA is more toxic than PCA to Ceriodaphnia dubia and Pimephales promelas. However neither mPCA nor PCA had an effect on the heterotrophic respiration of an AS mixed liquor sample at 1.5 g/L and there was probably no significant inhibition of the nitrification respiration. Samples of PCA and mPCA at 2 and 5 mg/L could not be completely degraded (with respect to their total theoretical oxygen demand) by dilute AS biomass during a 28 day incubation period. mPCA did not show significant degradation in the two different biodegradation tests performed.

Show moreIn this dissertation, we address the problem of analyzing the activities of people in a variety of scenarios, this is commonly encountered in vision applications. The overarching goal is to devise new representations for the activities, in settings where individuals or a number of people may take a part in specific activities. Different types of activities can be performed by either an individual at the fine level or by several people constituting a crowd at the coarse level. We take into account the domain specific information for modeling these activities. The summary of the proposed solutions is presented in the following.The holistic description of videos is appealing for visual detection and classification tasks for several reasons including capturing the spatial relations between the scene components, simplicity, and performance [1, 2, 3]. First, we present a holistic (global) frequency spectrum based descriptor for representing the atomic actions performed by individuals such as: bench pressing, diving, hand waving, boxing, playing guitar, mixing, jumping, horse riding, hula hooping etc. We model and learn these individual actions for classifying complex user uploaded videos. Our method bypasses the detection of interest points, the extraction of local video descriptors and the quantization of local descriptors into a code book; it represents each video sequence as a single feature vector. This holistic feature vector is computed by applying a bank of 3-D spatio-temporal filters on the frequency spectrum of a video sequence; hence it integrates the information about the motion and scene structure. We tested our approach on two of the most challenging datasets, UCF50 [4] and HMDB51 [5], and obtained promising results which demonstrates the robustness and the discriminative power of our holistic video descriptor for classifying videos of various realistic actions.In the above approach, a holistic feature vector of a video clip is acquired by dividing the video into spatio-temporal blocks then concatenating the features of the individual blocks together. However, such a holistic representation blindly incorporates all the video regions regardless of their contribution in classification. Next, we present an approach which improves the performance of the holistic descriptors for activity recognition. In our novel method, we improve the holistic descriptors by discovering the discriminative video blocks. We measure the discriminativity of a block by examining its response to a pre-learned support vector machine model. In particular, a block is considered discriminative if it responds positively for positive training samples, and negatively for negative training samples. We pose the problem of finding the optimal blocks as a problem of selecting a sparse set of blocks, which maximizes the total classifier discriminativity. Through a detailed set of experiments on benchmark datasets [6, 7, 8, 9, 5, 10], we show that our method discovers the useful regions in the videos and eliminates the ones which are confusing for classification, which results in significant performance improvement over the state-of-the-art.In contrast to the scenes where an individual performs a primitive action, there may be scenes with several people, where crowd behaviors may take place. For these types of scenes the traditional approaches for recognition will not work due to severe occlusion and computational requirements. The number of videos is limited and the scenes are complicated, hence learning these behaviors is not feasible. For this problem, we present a novel approach, based on the optical flow in a video sequence, for identifying five specific and common crowd behaviors in visual scenes. In the algorithm, the scene is overlaid by a grid of particles, initializing a dynamical system which is derived from the optical flow. Numerical integration of the optical flow provides particle trajectories that represent the motion in the scene. Linearization of the dynamical system allows a simple and practical analysis and classification of the behavior through the Jacobian matrix. Essentially, the eigenvalues of this matrix are used to determine the dynamic stability of points in the flow and each type of stability corresponds to one of the five crowd behaviors. The identified crowd behaviors are (1) bottlenecks: where many pedestrians/vehicles from various points in the scene are entering through one narrow passage, (2) fountainheads: where many pedestrians/vehicles are emerging from a narrow passage only to separate in many directions, (3) lanes: where many pedestrians/vehicles are moving at the same speeds in the same direction, (4) arches or rings: where the collective motion is curved or circular, and (5) blocking: where there is a opposing motion and desired movement of groups of pedestrians is somehow prohibited. The implementation requires identifying a region of interest in the scene, and checking the eigenvalues of the Jacobian matrix in that region to determine the type of flow, that corresponds to various well-defined crowd behaviors. The eigenvalues are only considered in these regions of interest, consistent with the linear approximation and the implied behaviors. Since changes in eigenvalues can mean changes in stability, corresponding to changes in behavior, we can repeat the algorithm over clips of long video sequences to locate changes in behavior. This method was tested on over real videos representing crowd and traffic scenes.

Show moreThis research developed a dynamic activated sludge model (ASM) to better describe the overall removal of organic substrate, quantified as chemical oxygen demand (COD), from A-stage high rate activated sludge (HRAS) systems. This dynamic computer model is based on a modified ASM1 (Henze et al., 2000) model. It was determined early in the project that influent soluble COD, which is normally represented by a single state variable in ASM1, had to be subdivided into two state variables (SBs and SBf, or slow and fast fractions) to simulate the performance of A-stage systems. Also, the addition of state variables differentiating colloidal COD from suspended COD was necessary due to short hydraulic residence times in A-stage systems which do not allow for complete enmeshment and bioflocculation of these particles as occurs in conventional activated sludge systems (which have longer solid retention times and hydraulic retention times). It was necessary to add several processes (both stoichiometry and kinetic equations) to the original ASM1 model including heterotrophic growth on both soluble substrate fractions and bioflocculation of colloidal solids. How to properly quantify heterotrophic growth on SBs and SBf resulted in two separate approaches with respect to process kinetic equations. In one approach the SBf was metabolized preferentially over SBs which was only utilized when SBf was not available. This is referred to as the Diauxic Model. In the other approach SBf and SBs were metabolized simultaneously, and this is referred to as the Dual Substrate Model. The Dual Substrate Model calibrated slightly better than the Diauxic Model for one of the two available pilot studies data sets (the other set was used for model verification). The Dual Substrate A-stage model was used to describe the effects of varying specific operating parameters including solids retention time (SRT), dissolved oxygen (DO), influent COD and temperature on the effluent COD:N ratio. The effluent COD:N ratio target was based on its suitability for a downstream nitrite shunt (i.e. nitritation/denitritation) process. In the downstream process the goal is to eliminate nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) from the reactor while selecting for ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB). The results showed that a low SRT ((<)0.25 d) can produce high effluent substrates (SB and CB), and elevated COD:N ratios consistent with NOB out-selection downstream, the HRAS model was able to predict the measured higher fraction of CB in the A-stage effluent at lower SRTs and DO concentrations, and to achieve the benefits of operating an A-stage process, while maintaining an effluent COD:N ratio suitable for a downstream nitritation/denitritation process, an A-stage SRT in the range of 0.1 to 0.25 d should be maintained.This research also included an analysis of A-stage pilot data using stoichiometry to determine the bio-products formed from soluble substrate removed in an A-stage reactor. The results were used to further refine the process components and stoichiometric parameters to be used in the A-stage dynamic computer model, which includes process mechanisms for flocculation and enmeshment of particulate and colloidal substrate, hydrolysis, production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and storage of soluble biodegradable substrate. Analysis of pilot data and simulations with the dynamic computer model implied (indirectly) that storage products were probably significant in A-stage COD removal.

Specifically, a moderated mediation model was developed to explain how self-regulation prompts interact with prove performance goal orientation to affect two mediational processes, time on task and self-regulatory activity, and ultimately impact learning within a learner-controlled e-learning environment. To assess these hypotheses, an online Microsoft Excel instructional program was developed wherein 197 participants had control over when and where they completed training, the content they reviewed, the delivery medium (text-based or video-based), and the sequencing and pace at which they progressed through training. Participants in the experimental condition were periodically asked questions (i.e., self-regulation prompts) designed to encourage self-assessment of learning progress and strategies. All participants completed questionnaires before and after training. Findings did not support the hypothesized model. Implications and limitations as well as recommendations for future research will be discussed.

The objective of this study is to tailor the properties of polyelectrolyte coated CNPs as a function of molecular weight to achieve a stable and catalytic active dispersion. This was achieved by coating CNPs with polyacrylic acid (PAA)which increased the dispersion stability of CNPs and enhanced the catalytic ability. The stability of PAA coating was analysed using the change in the Gibbs free energy computed by Langmuir adsorption model. The adsorption isotherms were determined using soft particle electrokinetics which overcomes the challenges presented by other techniques. The Gibbs free energy was highest for PAA coated CNPs by 250 kg/mole indicating the most stable coating. The free energy for PAA 100 kg/mole coated CNPs is 85% lower than the PAA250 coated CNPs. This significant difference is caused by the strong adsorption of PAA100 on CNPs. Catalytic activity of PAA-CNPs is accessed by the catalase enzymatic activity of nanoparticles. The catalase activity was higher for PAA coated CNPs as compared to bare CNPs which indicated preferential adsorption of hydrogen peroxide induced by coating. Apart from PAA coating the catalase activity is also affected by the structure of the coating layer.

These perceptions help managers decide Millennials' organizational fit. A review of literature revealed a scarcity of empirical research in this area with little empirical research from communication scholars who apply communication frameworks, theories, and concepts. This research used the lens of social constructionism to understand the membership categorization devices and category-bound activities managers use to characterize Millennials. In order to better understand how Millennials conform to and change organizational culture, data were reviewed for those normative and code rules managers described Millennials violating. In this qualitative, exploratory study, 25 managers who were 31 years of age or older that worked in the hospitality industry and managed Millennial (18 to 30 years old) employees were interviewed through a snowball convenience sample. Interviews were transcribed and patterns were identified. Data analysis indicated that (")kids,(") (")age group,(") and (")Millennials(") and variations of the Millennial term were used to categorize Millennials. Analysis of category-bound activities showed patterns in Millennials' desire for learning and training, mixed preference for teamwork often affected by their liking for peers, and needs for frequent, clear, personalized feedback. With respect to rule violations, data showed that some organizations were adapting their cell phone policies in response to Millennial rules resistance. However, organizations were not willing to accommodate Millennials' rule violations in either the area of time-off requests or uncivil behavior due to organizational codes.

One solution to this problem is through Voice Activity Detection (VAD). Many VAD's rely on time-domain features and simple thresholds for efficient speech detection however this doesn't say much about the signal being passed. More sophisticated methods employ machine learning algorithms, but train on specific noises intended for a target environment. Validating speech under a variety of unknown conditions must be possible; as well as differentiating between speech and non- speech data embedded within the packets. A real-time speech detection method is proposed that relies only on a clean speech model for detection. Through the use of Gammatone filter bank processing, the Cepstrum and several frequency domain features are used to train a One-Class Support Vector Machine which provides a clean-speech model irrespective of environmental noise. A Wiener filter is used to provide improved operation for harsh noise environments. Greater than 90% detection accuracy is achieved for clean speech with approximately 70% accuracy for SNR as low as 5dB.

This study examines the functional equivalency of three operational modes of a new active control sidestick during normal operations while performing manual piloting tasks. Data from a between-subjects, repeated-measures simulator test was analyzed using analysis of variance and equivalency analysis. Ten pilots participated in the simulator test which was conducted in a fixed-base, business jet simulator. Pilots performed maneuvers such as climbing and descending turns and ILS approaches using three sidestick modes: active, unlinked, and passive. RMS error for airspeed, flight path angle, and bank angle were measured in addition to touchdown points on the runway relative to centerline and runway threshold. Results indicate that the three operational modes are functionally equivalent when performing climbing and descending turns. Active and unlinked modes were found to be functionally equivalent when flying an ILS approach, but the passive mode, by a small margin, was not found to be functionally equivalent.

Show moreEarly alert systems have been recognized as a high impact practice designed to improve student engagement and student success. Early alert is designed to identify students with at-risk behaviors early in the semester before they decide to drop-out, withdraw, or fail their classes, using resources such as a predictive analysis tool or advising. For an early alert to be successful and efficient, faculty should be included in the process of early alert. This qualitative study examined faculty's perspective and experiences when implementing early alert strategies and intervention in a two-year institution. Using Cranton's seven facets of transformative learning as a conceptual framework, this study examined the changes, perception, and experiences of faculty as a result of implementation. The literature reviews best practices that can be considered when faculty designs their early alert strategies and intervention. Participants shared their During and After Implementation Journal experience by completing reflection journals. After careful analysis of their journals and initial interview, the following major themes emerged: a) at-risk behaviors, b) high-impact practices, c) intentionality, d) personal connection, e) perspective transformation, and f) value. As a result of these themes, recommendations were provided to assist faculty development and change agents in two-year institutions in improving early alert methods to increase student success.
