Show moreIt has long been argued that the end of the 20th century marked the triumph of liberal democracy. The third wave of democracy has increased the number of democracies in the world unprecedentedly and gave hope to many that democratic revolution is underway. However, in the last decade, this democratization process seems to have halted; there has been decline both in the number and quality of democracies. This thesis proposes an agent-based theory of democratic backsliding. More specifically, it is argued that leaders with undemocratic normative preferences and their ability to mobilize previously persecuted segments of society are the driving factors behind the present-day authoritarian resurgence. While the leader's fight with the oppressors of the marginalized group can bring a short-term of democratization, we argue that the unconditional support given by the marginalized group to the leader can allow the leader to undermine democracy by removing the checks on his power. The paper attempts to investigate similarities in the process of democratic derogation in a comparative case study of Venezuela and Turkey. The study shows that the support given to Erdogan and Chavez by the previously persecuted groups in their respective countries, religious/conservatives in Turkey and poor in Venezuela, allowed both leaders to undermine democracy in a subtle and incremental way.

Show moreThe purpose of the study was to examine the perceived effectiveness of the two-semester, job-embedded internship for the development of effective Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) teachers. Students who were enrolled in the Resident Teacher Professional Preparation Program (RTP3) were able to earn a Master's in the Art of Teaching (MAT), which included a two-semester, job-embedded internship. This study was designed to analyze the perceived effectiveness of the two-semester, job-embedded internship model at one urban high school from not only the resident teachers', but also designees and stakeholders of the RTP3. Resident teachers participated in the two-semester, job-embedded internship with the support of school site based mentors, school district and school site coaches, and university intern coordinators. The resident teachers participated in all aspect of the teaching process, and were evaluated using the school site evaluation instrument. As part of their internship, the resident teachers were evaluated using the Internship Assessment Summary Sheet. The resident teachers were also asked to participate in Lesson Study. Data were gathered through both qualitative and quantitative sources. To collect qualitative data, interviews were conducted with the resident teachers, school site designees, school district designees and university designees. Each respondent was asked 10 questions developed by the researcher and vetted by experts in the field. The questions were designed to gather perceptions of effectiveness in preparation of the resident teachers, as well as strengths and weaknesses of the model. Recommendations for future use of the two-semester, job-embedded internship model were also gathered. Quantitative data were collected and analyzed using the Internship Assessment Summary Sheet to assess the perception of the intern coordinators.The findings were that the two-semester, job-embedded internship was overall perceived as an effective model in preparing STEM teachers. The model allowed resident teachers to be engaged in the teaching process from the beginning of the school year. The support that was given throughout the internship was beneficial in helping resident teachers with teaching practice. It was recommended that using frequent and actionable feedback should be continued. The one weakness of the model was the need for more pedagogical preparation, especially in the area of classroom management.

Show moreThe intent of this qualitative research study was to investigate the experiences of eighth-grade readers as they read nonfiction text on an iPad for academic purposes. Analysis of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) calls for close reading requiring readers to interact with the text to create meaning (Fisher, n.d.). With this in mind, the researcher investigated reading strategies students used to support their reading as well as what role the iPad features played in the reading process. Several theoretical perspectives informed the framework for this study: (a) New Literacies theory, (b) transactional theory, (c) constructivist theory, and (d) metacognition theory. These perspectives focused on the reading comprehension strategies students used to facilitate reading comprehension while reading nonfiction text on an e-reader, specifically on an iPad. Data sources for this study included the following: (a) retrospective think alouds; (b) student questionnaire about iPad knowledge and experiences; (c) pre-study student interview; (d) post-study student interview; (e) Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Strategies Inventory (MARSI); (f) student observations; and (g) teacher interview. Pre-selection data for the collective case study participants were used to identify proficient readers who displayed confidence, competency, and control over text. The criteria used for participant selection included (a) reading skills using Lexile Levels, (b) MARSI survey, and (c) iPad use survey to determine prior knowledge of iPad. Three themes emerged in the collective case study that were directly related to the analysis. Students used a combination of (a) reading comprehension strategies, (b) nonfiction features, and (c) iPad features to support their reading of nonfiction on the iPad. Analysis of the data revealed three distinct groups for which recommendations were made: (a) classroom teachers, (b) publishers, and (c) researchers.

Show moreThis study investigated the most common frames used in news coverage of the Church of Scientology from 2009 to 2013. Using textual analysis, with framing and public relations theories as lenses, this study examined recent news coverage (-) both print and television (-) to identify frames used, and the potential public relations crises the Church is currently facing due to this media exposure. Analysis showed three major frames used during coverage, along with their corresponding sub-frames, which highlight certain aspects of the frame: Culture of Abuse (Imprisonment, Controlling, Family Disconnection, Exploitation of Children, Violence, and Financial Abuse), The Information Paradox (Conflicting Information, Simple Misunderstanding, and Non-Traditional Approach), and Leadership Issues (The Problem Lies with Leadership, Celebrity Obsession). Also uncovered were three potential public relations crises: The Mistreatment of Church Members, The Misuse of Funds, and Bad Communication Strategy. The research showed a strong strategic preference of the Church to use legal tactics or denial strategies when dealing with crises. A review of public relations theory suggests that the Church use a more open approach and also incorporate mortification strategies to accept blame and repair their damaged image.

Show moreThe researcher in this investigation describes the similarities and differences of movement in preschool and kindergarten classrooms for young children with developmental delay. Through the use of a mixed method research design, the researcher examined how movement is integrated throughout a school day and integrated into teacher-directed mathematics activities. This study used a multiple case study method that included observations of preschool (n= 3) and kindergarten (n= 3) classrooms to determine similarities and differences in movement. In addition, a quantitative measure was embedded within the multiple case study design to compare movement of children with developmental delay. A thematic analysis resulted in themes connected to movement and teachers' perceptions in preschool and kindergarten. Preschool case themes included the use of videos with music for movement, literacy movement, physical transitions, fine motor activities, free play and fine motor manipulatives. Kindergarten case themes included: physical transitions, special areas, fine motor activities, and fine motor workbook activities. The researcher determined that while young children with disabilities in kindergarten classrooms exhibited higher levels of physical activity, as measured by steps taken, than young children with disabilities in preschool classrooms, preschool teachers consistently integrated a variety of movement activities at a higher rate. The results of this study exposed the need for a shared community interest of developing a scaffolding structure between preschool and kindergarten to ensure an effective transition between settings for children with DD.

Show moreThe Multiple Streams model developed by John Kingdon (1995) and Nikolaos Zahariadis (2007) provides a valuable framework for understanding the nature of policy change. This investigation draws extensively upon the Multiple Streams framework in order to understand the development of gun-control policy initiatives under President Barack Obama.The investigation uses a case-study approach with in-depth analysis of four different mass-shooting events that took place in the United States between 2009 and 2012. Reconstruction of the shooting events and detailed parsing of the Obama administration's official responses to each incident, when viewed through the Multiple Streams lens, clearly explain why Obama's aggressive policy initiative was so delayed in its emergence in spite of several shootings and the President's clearly stated belief that gun-reform was a necessary step for the federal government. While the term (")policy change(") is broad and may encompass all sorts of governmental responsiveness, the term herein should be interpreted in the narrowest sense: exclusively encompassing legislative initiatives.Ultimately, the investigation concludes that numerous factors, but most prominently concerns about the timing and results of the 2010 Midterm and 2012 General Elections, prevented an aggressive pursuit of gun-reform prior to January 2013. The tragic shooting of 28 people in Newtown, Connecticut, then served as a prime focusing event for the President to aggressively engage a long-standing goal.
