Show moreOne of the most important challenges in real-time simulation of large trees and vegetation is the vast number of calculations required to simulate the interactions between all the branches in the tree when external forces are applied to it. This paper will propose the use of algorithms employed by applications like cloth and soft body simulations, where objects can be represented by a finite system of particles connected via spring-like constraints, for the structural representation and manipulation of trees in real-time. We will then derive and show the use of Verlet integration and the constraint configuration used for simulating trees while constructing the necessary data structures that encapsulate the procedural creation of these objects. Furthermore, we will utilize this system to simulate branch breakage due to accumulated external and internal pressure.

Show moreThe dissertation is concerned with the design of high-efficiency permanent magnet synchronous machinery and the control system. The dissertation first talks about the basic concept of the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) design and the mathematics design model of the advanced design method. The advantage of the design method is that it can increase the high load capacity at no cost of increasing the total machine size. After that, the control method of the PMSM and Permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) is introduced. The design, simulation, and test of a permanent magnet brushless DC (BLDC) motor for electric impact wrench and new mechanical structure are first presented based on the design method. Finite element analysis based on the Maxwell 2D is built to optimize the design and the control board is designed using Altium Designer. Both the motor and control board have been fabricated and tested to verify the design. The electrical and mechanical design are combined, and it provides an analytical IPMBLDC design method and an innovative and reasonable mechanical dynamical calculation method for the impact wrench system, which can be used in whole system design of other functional electric tools. A 2kw high-efficiency alternator system and its control board system are also designed, analyzed and fabricated applying to the truck auxiliary power unit (APU). The alternator system has two stages. The first stage is that the alternator three-phase outputs are connected to the three-phase active rectifier to get 48V DC. An advanced Sliding Mode Observer (SMO) is used to get an alternator position. The buck is used for the second stage to get 14V DC output. The whole system efficiency is much higher than the traditional system using induction motor.

Show moreThis dissertation evaluates the possibility of wireless power transfer (WPT) systems for space applications, with an emphasis in launch vehicles (rockets). After performing literature review for WPT systems, it was identified that magnetic resonance provides the more suited set of characteristics for this application. Advanced analysis, simulation and testing were performed to magnetic resonance WPT systems to acquire system performance insight. This was accomplished by evaluating/varying coupling configuration, load effects and magnetic element physical characteristics (i.e. wire material, loop radius, etc.). It was identified by analysis, circuit simulation and testing that the best coupling configuration for this application was series-series and series-shunt with Litz wire loop inductors. The main concern identified for the implementation of these systems for space applications was radiated emissions that could potentially generate electromagnetic interference (EMI). To address this EMI concern, we developed the Electromagnetic Compatibility Radiated Emissions Compliance Design Evaluation Approach for WPT Space Systems. This approach systematically allocates key analyses, simulations and tests procedures to predict WPT EMC compliance to NASA's EMC standard Mil-Std-461E/F. Three prototype/magnetic elements were successfully assessed by implementing the WPT EMC design approach. The electric fields intensity generated by the WPT prototypes/magnetic elements tested were: 30.02 dBuV/m, 28.90 dBuV/m and 82.13 dBuV/m (requirement limit: 140 dBuV/m). All three prototypes successfully transferred power wirelessly and successfully met the NASA EMC requirements.

Show moreAccurate models to reliably predict sediment and chemical transport in watershed water systems enhance the ability of environmental scientists, engineers and decision makers to analyze the impact of contamination problems and to evaluate the efficacy of alternative remediation techniques and management strategies prior to incurring expense in the field. This dissertation presents the conceptual and mathematical development of a general numerical model simulating (1) sediment and reactive chemical transport in river/stream networks of watershed systems; (2) sediment and reactive chemical transport in overland shallow water of watershed systems; and (3) reactive chemical transport in three-dimensional subsurface systems. Through the decomposition of the system of species transport equations via Gauss-Jordan column reduction of the reaction network, fast reactions and slow reactions are decoupled, which enables robust numerical integrations. Species reactive transport equations are transformed into two sets: nonlinear algebraic equations representing equilibrium reactions and transport equations of kinetic-variables in terms of kinetically controlled reaction rates. As a result, the model uses kinetic-variables instead of biogeochemical species as primary dependent variables, which reduces the number of transport equations and simplifies reaction terms in these equations. For each time step, we first solve the advective-dispersive transport of kinetic-variables. We then solve the reactive chemical system node by node to yield concentrations of all species. In order to obtain accurate, efficient and robust computations, five numerical options are provided to solve the advective-dispersive transport equations; and three coupling strategies are given to deal with the reactive chemistry. Verification examples are compared with analytical solutions to demonstrate the numerical accuracy of the code and to emphasize the need of implementing various numerical options and coupling strategies to deal with different types of problems for different application circumstances. Validation examples are presented to evaluate the ability of the model to replicate behavior observed in real systems. Hypothetical examples with complex reaction networks are employed to demonstrate the design capability of the model to handle field-scale problems involving both kinetic and equilibrium reactions. The deficiency of current practices in the water quality modeling is discussed and potential improvements over current practices using this model are addressed.
