Show moreThe purpose of this dissertation was to establish how vibrotactile guidance cues can be used to improve marksmanship. This work originated in an effort to provide covert communication, navigation, and weapon aiming cues for infantrymen. It is predominantly an application-driven investigation rather than driven a priori by specific theoretical predictions from models of human performance. Three experiments are presented. Experiment 1 established the affect on initial response to vibrotactile guidance cues of tactor placements on the palmer versus dorsal surface of the hand, and targets appearing left versus right of center. Results suggest that tactile cues provided on the left side of the medial line of the hand afford moving the hand to the left, while tactile cues provided on the right side of the medial line afford moving the hand to the right. Experiment 2 established the affect of continuous relative distance cues and on- versus off-target vibrotactile stimuli on reaction time and accuracy for target selection. Results indicated an interaction between the pulse rate of vibrotactile stimuli and the method used to highlight an "on-target" condition; the suppressed target condition was superior to the enhanced target condition when the pulse rate increased as the cursor moved closer to a target. Experiment 3 established if there are performance differences between discrete and continuous distance information for target selection, and investigated the interaction between the near-target pulse rate and on-target cues. Results indicate that maximizing the difference between near-target guidance cues and on-target cues reduces the target selection time, particularly when the near-target pulse rates are fast (ISI = 10 msec). The results also suggest that, as with vision, the vibrotactile off-target guidance cues are not necessary during the whole target selection task. Rather, the guidance cues can be provided only during the initial pop-up condition and during the sub-movements closing on the target.

Show moreThe work presented gives an energy-optimal solution to the guidance problem of an AUV. The presented guidance methods are for lower level control of AUV paths, facilitating existing global planning methods to be carried out comparatively more efficiently. The underlying concept is to use the energy of fluid flow fields the AUVs are navigating to extend the duration of missions. This allows gathering of comparatively more data with higher spatio-temporal resolution. The problem is formulated for a generalized two dimensional uniform flow field given a fixed final time andfree end states. This allows the AUVs to navigate to certain spatial positions while maintaining the required temporal resolution of each segment of its mission. The simplistic way the problem is posed allows an analytical closed form solution of the Euler-Lagrange equations. Two dimensional thrust vectors are obtained as optimal control inputs. The control inputs are then incorporated into afeedback structure, allowing the particle to navigate in the presence of disturbance in the flow field. Further, the work also explores the influence of fluid-particle interaction on the control cost and behavior of the particle. The concept of changing the cost weights of the optimal cost formulation in situ has been introduced. Potential applications of the present concept are explored through anobstacle avoidance scenario. The optimal guidance methods are then adapted to non-uniform flow fields with quadratic and discontinuous spatial variation being the primary focus.

Encouraged by the applicability of this user parameter, GENEX-ITACG is anextension that allows a salvo of missiles to cooperatively achieve the same objectives of GENEXagainst a stationary target through the incorporation of a cooperative trajectory shaping guidancelaw called Impact Time and Angle Control Guidance (ITACG).ITACG allows a salvo of missile to simultaneously hit a stationary target at a prescribed impactangle and impact time. This predetermined impact time is what allows each missile involvedin the salvo attack to simultaneously arrived at the target with unique approach angles, whichgreatly increases the probability of success against well defended targets. GENEX-ITACG furtherincreases this probability of kill by allowing each missile to approach the target with a uniqueapproach angle rate through the use of a user design parameter.The incorporation of ITACG into GENEX is accomplished through the use of linear optimal controlby casting the cost function of GENEX into the formulation of ITACG. The feasibility GENEXITACGis demonstrated across three scenarios that demonstrate the ITACG portion of the guidancelaw, the GENEX portion of the guidance law, and finally the entirety of the guidance law. Theresults indicate that GENEX-ITACG is able to successfully guide a salvo of missiles to simultaneouslyhit a stationary target at a predefined terminal impact angle and impact time, while alsoallowing the user to adjust the aggressiveness of approach.

Show moreAccording to the ASCA National Model, school counselors are expected to deliver classroom guidance lessons; yet, there has been little emphasis on graduate coursework targeting the development and implementation of guidance curriculum lessons in PSC training. A national study conducted by Perusse, Goodnough and Noel (2001) was conducted looking at how counselor educators were training "entry level school counseling students" in the skills needed for them to be successful as PSCs. They found that of the 189 school counseling programs surveyed only 3% offered a guidance curriculum course and 13.2% offered a foundations in education course. Inferring that many of programs surveyed did not have a course specific to classroom guidance and/or classroom management. A classroom guidance curriculum is a developmental, systematic method by which students receive structured lessons that address academic, career, and personal/social competencies (ASCA, 2005). Classroom guidance lessons provide a forum for school counselors to address such student needs as educational resources, postsecondary opportunities, school transitions, bullying, violence prevention, social-emotional development, and academic competence in a classroom environment (Akos & Levitt, 2002; Akos, Cockman & Strickland, 2007; Gerler & Anderson, 1986). Through classroom guidance, school counselors can interact with many of the students that they would normally not see on a day-to-day basis while providing information, building awareness and having discussions on topics that affect these student populations every day. The present study seeks to explore the use of an innovative method for training PSCs in classroom guidance and classroom management. This method involves the use of a mixed reality simulation that allows PSC students to learn and practice classroom guidance skills in a simulated environment.

Show moreIn this paper, an innovative cooperative navigation method is proposed for multiple Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) based on online target position measurements. These noisy position measurement signals are used to estimate the target's velocity for non-maneuvering targets or the target's velocity and acceleration for maneuvering targets. The estimator's tracking capability is physically constrained due to the target's kinematic limitations and therefore is potentially improvable by designing a higher performance estimator. An H-infinity filter is implemented to increase the robustness of the estimation accuracy. The performance of the robust estimator is compared to a Kalman filter and the results illustrate more precise estimation of the target's motion in compensating for surrounding noises and disturbances. Furthermore, an adaptive guidance algorithm, based on the seeker's field-of-view and linear region, is used to deliver the pursuer to the maneuvering target. The initial guidance algorithm utilizes the velocity pursuit guidance law because of its insensitivity to target motion; while the terminal guidance algorithm leverages the acceleration estimates (from the H-infinity filter) to augment the proportional navigation guidance law for increased accuracy in engaging maneuvering targets. The main objective of this work is to develop a robust estimator/tracker and an adaptive guidance algorithm which are directly applicable UAVs.

Show moreThis document describes the design and analysis of the Navigation, Guidance and Control System for the KnightSat project. The purpose for the project is to test and demonstrate new technologies the Air Force would be interested in for research and development. The primary mission of KnightSat is to show how a constellation of satellites can maintain relative position with each other autonomously using the Microwave Electro Thermal (MET) thruster. The secondary mission is to use multiple satellite imagery to obtain 3 dimensional stereo photographs of observable terrain. Formation flying itself has many possible uses for future applications. Selected missions that require imaging or data collection can be more economically accomplished using smaller multiple satellites. The MET thruster is a very efficient, but low thrust alternative that can provide thrust for a very long time, hence provide the low thrust necessary to maintain the satellites at a constant separation. The challenge is to design a working control algorithm to provide the desired output data to be used to command the MET thrusters. The satellites are to maintain a constant relative distance from each other, and use the least amount of fuel possible. If one satellite runs out of fuel before the other, it would render the constellation less useful or useless. Hence, the satellites must use the same amount of fuel in order to maintain an optimal operational duration on orbit.
