Show moreThis thesis attempts to identify and explain what influences the length of time an inmate spends on Florida's death row. A systematic random sample of 33 Florida death row inmates was drawn from the Florida Department of Corrections death row roster and the Florida Commission on Capital Cases inmate roster. Documented for each death row inmate was how long he spent on Florida's death row navigating the various stages and steps in Florida's post-conviction capital punishment process. The data show that petitions to the state trial courts and appeals to the Florida Supreme Court take the longest time in Florida's post-conviction capital punishment process. It also shows a considerable amount of "dead time," which refers to any additional time that an inmate spends on death row with no legal actions pending. A theory of "benign neglect" is proposed as the most likely explanation for the excessive delays.

The friends are Don Bestos, Bill Maxwell, and Bergman, men who are or were at the very top of their sport, and now question their friendships with each other and where their lives are headed. The story takes place on a weekend in the summer of 2000 at the USRowing Convention in Las Vegas, the big blow-out for everyone in the sport of rowing. The Rowing Coaches also offers a look at an esoteric and often misunderstood sport. The main character is Don Bestos, a fifty-year-old head coach from Northeastern University. Don is recently divorced and has yet to move on from the failure of his marriage. The memory of his ex-wife Annie causes him physical pain and occasionally haunts him. Don is in crisis and he questions what he has done with his life and whether he can continue with his chosen career. Don's concerns are compounded by his alcoholism. He grapples with his addiction throughout the story. Don also has a peculiar gift; upon touching certain inanimate objects, such as a boat, he can sense if the object has a soul. Don's best friend is Bergman, the obese head coach from the University of Pennsylvania. Bergman's team has been losing for years and he has lost the drive to continue as an elite rowing coach. Bergman is a loyal friend and he watches out for his friends. The one coach who appears to be on the upswing is Billy Maxwell, Don's assistant coach at Northeastern. Billy is a former Olympian and he is considered one of the rising stars in the coaching profession. Billy has been a winner at every level in the sport and he is willing to sacrifice everything to win, even friendship. Other characters include Stacy Kookla, a sociable sales representative for the top rowing boat manufacturer in the country; Andy Carr, the head coach of Yale University; and Missy Krajcik, the fastest female rower in the world.

Show moreCrew race strategy is typically formulated by coaches based on rowing tradition and years of experience. However, coaching strategies are not generally supported by empirical evidence and decision-support models. Previous models of crew race strategy have been constrained by the sparse information published on crew race performance (quarterly 500-meter splits). Empirical research has merely summarized which quarterly splits averaged the fastest and slowest relative to the other splits and relative to the average speed of the other competitors. Video records of crew race world championships provide a rich source of data for those capable and patient enough to mine this level of detail. This dissertation is based on a precise frame-by-frame video analysis of five world championship rowing finals. With six competing crews per race, a database of 75 race-pair duels was compiled that summarizes race positioning, competitive drives, and relative stroke rates at 10-meter intervals recorded with photo-finish precision (30 frames per second). The drive-based research pioneered in this dissertation makes several contributions to understanding the dynamics of crew race strategy and performance: 1) An 8-factor conceptual model of crew race performance. 2) A generic drive model that decomposes how pairs of crews duel in a race. 3) Graphical summaries of the rates and locations of successful and unsuccessful drives. 4) Contour lines of the margins that winning crews hold over the course of the race. 5) Trend lines for what constitutes a probabilistically decisive lead as a function of position along the course, seconds behind the leader, and whether the trailing crew is driving. This research defines a new drive-based vocabulary for evaluating crew race performance for use by coaches, competitors and race analysts. The research graphically illustrates situational parameters helpful in formulating race strategy and guiding real-time decision-making by competitors. This research also lays the foundation for future industrial engineering decision-support models and associated parameters as applied to race strategy and tactics.

Fifteen-second splits for distance and mean power were also analyzed. The PAP protocols were performed on a rowing ergometer, in a movement pattern that simulated rowing. ISO consisted of 5 (&)#215; 5-second static muscle actions with the ergometer handle rendered immovable with a nylon boat-strap, while DYN consisted of 2 (&)#215; 10-second all-out rowing bouts, separated by a 2-minute rest interval. A two-way (condition by experience level) interaction was found for distance, mean power and W' with significant differences (DYN (>) CON; 5.6 m, 5.9W and 1561.6 J) for more experienced rowers ((>)3.75 years; n=19) and no differences for less experienced rowers (n=18). A main effect for stroke rate was found with DYN(>)CON (1 s/min). Split analysis of mean power output revealed a two-way (condition by 15s split) interaction independent from experience level. Mean power in DYN was significantly greater than CON and ISO in the 15-30, 30-45, 45-60 and 60-75 second intervals. These results suggest that dynamic PAP may be beneficial for experienced rowers and that these strategies might benefit a greater power output over shorter distances regardless of experience. Future studies should investigate potential benefits of this protocol over a full race distance and identify the difference between experienced and less experienced rowers.

Pressure data is also gathered and used to calculate the channel mass flux profiles, used to better understand the flow characteristics of the impingement channel. While target plate heat transfer profiles have been thoroughly studied in the literature, side wall data has only recently begun to be studied. The present work shows the significant impact the side walls provide to the overall heat transfer capabilities of the impingement channel. It was shown that the side walls provide a significant amount of heat transfer to the channel. A channel height of three diameters was found to be the optimum height in order to achieve the largest heat transfer rates out of all channels.

Reported next is a comparison between two very common turbulence models, Realizable k-epsilon and SST k-omega, and their ability to predict local film cooling effectiveness throughout a full-coverage array.The objective of the experimental study is the quantification of local heat transferaugmentation and adiabatic film cooling effectiveness for four surfaces cooled by large, both in hole count and in non-dimensional spacing, arrays of film cooling holes. The four arrays are of two different hole-to-hole spacings (P=D = X=D = 14.5; 19.8) and two different hole inclination angles (alpha = 30°; 45°), with cylindrical holes compounded relative to the flow(beta = 45°) and arranged in a staggered configuration. Arrays of up to 30 rows are tested so that the superposition effect of the coolant film can be studied. In addition, shortened arrays of up to 20 rows of coolant holes are also tested so that the decay of the coolant film following injection can be studied.Levels of laterally averaged effectiveness reach values as high as η = 0.5, and are not yet at the asymptotic limit even after 20 - 30 rows of injection for all cases studied. Levels of heat transfer augmentation asymptotically approach values of h=h0 ≈ 1.35 rather quickly, only after 10 rows. It is conjectured that the heat transfer augmentation levels off very quickly due to the boundary layer reaching an equilibrium in which the perturbation from additional film rows has reached a balance with the damping effect resulting from viscosity. The levels of laterally averaged adiabatic film cooling effectiveness far exceeding eta = 0.5 aremuch higher than expected. The heat transfer augmentation levels off quickly as opposed tothe film effectiveness which continues to rise (although asymptotically) at large row numbers. This ensures that an increased row count represents coolant well spent.The numerical predictions are carried out in order to test the ability of the two mostcommon turbulence models to properly predict full-coverage film cooling. The two models chosen, Realizable k-epsilon (RKE) and Shear Stress Transport k-omega (SSTKW), areboth two-equation models coupled with Reynolds Averaged governing equations which makeseveral gross physical assumptions and require several empirical values. Hence, the modelsare not expected to provide perfect results. However, very good average values are seen tobe obtained through these simple models. Using RKE in order to model full-coverage filmcooling will yield results with 30% less error than selecting SSTKW.

The objective of the present study is to conduct several different measurements of multi-row film cooling arrays in order to better understand the physics involved with injection of coolant through multiple rows of discrete holes into a flat plate turbulent boundary layer. Adiabatic effectiveness distributions are measured for several multi-row film cooling geometries. The geometries are designed with two different hole spacings and two different hole types to yield four total geometries. One of the four geometries tested for adiabatic effectiveness was selected for flowfield measurements. The wall and flowfield are studied with several testing techniques, including: particle image velocimetry, hot wire anemometry, pressure sensitive paint and discrete gas sampling.
