Show moreABSTRACT In 1991, British novelist Patricia Barker published Regeneration, the first of three novels that portrayed the exploits of both factual and fictional characters during the darkest days of WWI. Barker's Eye in the Door (1993), followed by The Ghost Road (1995) for which she won the Booker Prize for Fiction, completed the series that explored the effects of combat on the human psyche. What emerges as a dominant feature of Barker's war novels is her depiction of the ocular sense. Reminiscent of Orwellianism, Barker's texts contain a seemingly ubiquitous ocular presence. For example, neurasthenic patients are scrutinized by army psychiatrists, objectors and subversives are spied upon or imprisoned so that their activities may be observed, and combatants are faced with the challenge of reconciling the horrifying events they have witnessed in combat. This study investigates the role and importance of Pat Barker's depiction of eyes and visuality in her war trilogy. The overreaching goal of the thesis to examine Barker's aestheticized notion of ocularity. It is my aim to come some conclusions about how vision / ocularity signal the emergence of a few central themes in the texts such as power relationships, objectification, exposure and the transgression of boundaries. The social and linguistic theories of Michael Foucault, Roland Barthes, Georges Bataille, Martin Jay and others who have addressed the themes of perception and ocular symbolism will be introduced into my discussion with the aim of providing a theoretic foundation to many of my assertions. Chapters will begin with an interpretation of a piece of theoretical writing by one of these authors followed by an analysis of Barker's texts that incorporates the major tenets of that theory. These tenets will serve as a basis to my discussion and it is my hope that, through the creative application of theoretical writing, I will address a number of aspects of Barker's work, especially in relation to her ocular imagery, that that have thus far gone unexplored.

New research has indicated that intraocular pressure is not the only risk factor associated with glaucomatous optic neuropathy. In recent years, a vascular deregulation in ocular blood flow has been considered a possible risk factor in glaucoma. A laser peripheral iridoplasty is a standard treatment option in non-pupillary block angle-closure glaucoma. The present study employed a secondary retrospective design and utilized patient's data from an ophthalmologist's practice. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of laser peripheral iridoplasty on pulsatile ocular blood flow in primary angle-closure glaucoma and primary angle-closure suspects. A sample of 30 eyes from 17 patients was analyzed for this study. A significant increase in pulsatile ocular blood flow was found among primary angle-closure suspects. Additional data analysis was performed through SPSS software to examine the effect on these variables by age, sex and medical history as a total sample and in each group. Primary angle-closure suspects who were 51-60 years old showed a significant increase in intraocular pressure after laser treatment, however, primary angle-closure glaucoma patients who were 71-80 years old showed a significant decrease in intraocular pressure. Furthermore, a significant increase in pulsatile ocular blood flow was found in female subjects among primary angle-closure suspects, supporting the need for gender medicine research. Lastly, the pulsatile ocular blood flow increased significantly among primary angle-closure suspects who were also suffering from cardiovascular disease. Among primary angle-closure glaucoma patients who were suffering from both cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus, a significant decrease in intraocular pressure was observed.

In order to place objects in space, the cartographer inserts his own judgment into the scheme of his design. During the Early Modern period, maps were no longer suspicious icons as they were in the Middle Ages and not yet products of science, but subjects of discourse and works of art. The image of a cartographer's territory depended on his vision�both the nature and placement of his gaze�and the product reflected that author's judgment. This is not a study of maps as such but of Early Modern literature, cartographic by nature�the observations of the author were the motif of its design. However, rather than concretize observational judgment through art, the Early Modern literature discussed asserts a reverse relation�the generation of the material which may be observed, the reality, by the views of authors. Spatiality is now an emerging philosophical field of study, taking root in the philosophy of Deleuze & Guattari. Using the notion prevalent in both Postmodern and Early Modern spatiality, which makes of perception a collective delusion with its roots in the critique of Kant, this thesis draws a through-line across time, as texts such as Robert Burton's An Anatomy of Melancholy, Thomas More's Utopia, and selections from William Shakespeare display a tendency to remove value from the standard of representation, to replace meaning with cognition and prioritize a view of views over an observable world. Only John Milton approaches perception as possibly referential to objective reality, by re-inserting his ability to observe and exist in that reality, in a corpus which becomes less generative simulations of material than concrete signposts to his judgment in the world.
