Show moreAttention has been focused on electromagnetic chirality and its potential applications to microwave, millimeter wave and optical wave devices. In this work, wave propagation through a chiral periodic structure with arbitrary shape is investigated. Although perturbation theory and coupled-mode theory have been used to analyze chiral periodic structure, those are approximate methods and can only be used for low frequency applications. In this work, the rigorous mode-matching method is used to solve the problem. Staircase approximation is introduced to change the curved structure to a multilayer structure. The field solutions in the uniform air regions and unbounded air-chiral periodic array have been derived. Finite element method is used to solve the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions in the periodic chiral slabs. Mode-matching method is used at the boundaries to calculate the scattering characteristics. Numerical results are displayed to explain the underlying physical properties of the chiral periodic structure. The Wood's anomalies at high frequencies have been investigated and explained by the excitation of leaky waves guided along the periodic layer. The influence of frequency, chirality parameter, incident angle, curve shape and period are discussed. It has been found that the chiral periodic structure can be used as both a frequency selective device and a mode conversion device. First, the derivation and numeric calculation were done with the principal plane incidence. Then, the discussion was extended to the more general case of oblique incidence by the coordinate transformation.

Show moreMolecules that are non-superimposable on their mirror image are named chiral or optically active compound. Over the years, molecular chirality has played an essential role in the understanding of fundamental aspects associated the origin of life, drug and food technologies and, asymmetric catalysis, among others. Moreover, most of the groundbreaking discoveries and advances made in this field have happened due to the development of spectroscopic techniques based on the natural asymmetry of the enantiomers and their ability to preferentially absorb right or left polarized light. For instance, circular dichroism (CD), which measures the difference in absorption between these two states of polarized light, has emerged as one of the most useful spectroscopic methods to identify and characterize chiral compounds. Unfortunately, CD is based on linear absorption which, in most common organic molecules, takes place in the UV region of the spectrum where the majority of organic solvents absorb as well. This certainly imposes limitations in the indiscriminated applicability of this technique to the study of chiral chromophores of biological interest in non-aqueous solutions. Consequently, a systematic and comprehensive characterization of the electronic and optical properties of such molecular entities still remains a major issue to be addressed. On this regard, nonlinear optics offers new alternatives to overcome some of the shortcomings of the standard linear CD-based spectroscopy. In order to surmount the existent limitations in this field and deepen in the fundamental understanding of chiral systems, we have mainly directed the attention of our research to the experimental and theoretical study of the polarization dependent two-photon absorption (2PA) of several chiral azo-compounds and binaphthol derivatives in solution. The first part of this dissertation (Chapters I-IV) covers a full characterization of the linear and nonlinear optical properties of a series of non-chiral and chiral azo derivatives. The combination of experimental techniques such as absorption, fluorescence, excitation anisotropy, circular dichroism, two-photon absorption and two-photon absorption circular-linear dichroism in combination with density functional theory calculations allowed us to unambiguously distinguish and assign the spectral position of the main electronic transitions (n-* and -*) in azobenzene derivatives. Our results represent a major contribution to the understanding of the electronic structure of these organic chromophores which have been reported of potential interest in the design of optoelectronic devices. Then, Chapter V describes the development of a novel experimental technique called the synchronized double L-scan for the study of polarization dependent multiphoton absorption in chiral samples. The high sensitivity of this technique resides in the use of ÃÂ"twinÃÂ" pulses to account for energy and mode fluctuations of the excitation pulse when determining absorption nonlinearities as a function of the light polarization. The robustness of this method was validated by measuring the first ever reported two-photon absorption circular dichroism (2PA-CD) spectrum on a chiral binaphthol derivative in solution. Finally, Chapters VI and VII compile an ample experimental and theoretical investigation of the chirality-dependent 2PA of axial enantiomers in solution. We combined the use of the synchronized double L-scan technique with state-of-the-art density functional theory calculations to provide a precise and reliable description of the contribution of the different electronic excited states to the 2PA-CD and 2PA-CLD spectra. Our findings are foreseen to have a tremendous impact in the comprehension of some of the most fundamental aspects of chiral phenomena.

Show moreRecent efforts to classify off-shell representations of supersymmetry without a central charge have focused upon directed, supermultiplet graphs of hypercubic topology known as Adinkras. These encodings of Super Poincare algebras, depict every generator of a chosen supersymmetry as a node-pair transformtion between fermionic / bosonic componentfields. This research thesis is a culmination of investigating novel diagrammatic sums of gauge quotients by supersymmetric images of other Adinkras, and the correlated building of field theoretic worldline Lagrangians to accommodate both classical and quantum venues. We find Ref [40], that such gauge quotients do not yield other stand alone or (")proper(") Adinkras as afore sighted, nor can they be decomposed into supermultiplet sums, but are rather a connected (")Adinkraic network("). Their iteration, analogous to Weyl's construction for producing all finite-dimensional unitary representations in Lie algebras, sets off chains of algebraic paradigms in discrete-graph and continuous-field variables, the links of which feature distinct, supersymmetric Lagrangian templates. Collectively, these Adiankraic series air new symbolic genera for equation to phase moments in Feynman path integrals. Guided in this light, we proceed by constructing Lagrangians actions for the N = 3 supermultiplet YI /(iDI X) for I = 1, 2, 3, where YI and X are standard, Salam-Strathdee superfields: YI fermionic and X bosonic. The system, bilinear in the component fields exhibits a total of thirteen free parameters, seven of which specify Zeeman-like coupling to external background (magnetic) fluxes. All but special subsets of this parameter space describe aperiodic oscillatory responses, some of which are found to be surprisingly controlled by the golden ratio, ? ? 1.61803, Ref [52]. It is further determined that these Lagrangians allow an N = 3 ? 4 supersymmetric extension to the Chiral-Chiral and Chiral-twisted-Chiral multiplet, while a subset admits two inequivalent such extensions. In a natural progression, a continuum of observably and usefully inequivalent, finite-dimensional off-shellrepresentations of worldline N = 4 extended supersymmetry are explored, that are variatefrom one another but in the value of a tuning parameter, Ref [53]. Their dynamics turnsout to be nontrivial already when restricting to just bilinear Lagrangians. In particular, wefind a 34-parameter family of bilinear Lagrangians that couple two differently tuned supermultiplets to each other and to external magnetic fluxes, where the explicit parameter dependence is unremovable by any field redefinition and is therefore observable. This offers the evaluation of X-phase sensitive, off-shell path integrals with promising correlationsto group product decompositions and to deriving source emergences of higher-order background flux-forms on 2-dimensional manifolds, the stacks of which comprise space-time volumes. Application to nonlinear sigma models would naturally follow, having potential use in M- and F- string theories.

Show moreSee-through augmented reality and virtual reality displays are emerging due to their widespread applications in education, engineering design, medical, retail, transportation, automotive, aerospace, gaming, and entertainment. For augmented reality and virtual reality displays, high-resolution density, high luminance, fast response time and high ambient contrast ratio are critically needed. High-resolution density helps eliminate the screen-door effect, high luminance and fast response time enable low duty ratio operation, which plays a key role for suppressing image blurs. A dimmer placed in front of AR display helps to control the incident background light, which in turn improves the image contrast. In this dissertation, we have focused three crucial display metrics: high luminance, fast motion picture response time (MPRT) and high ambient contrast ratio. We report a fringe-field switching liquid crystal display, abbreviated as d-FFS LCD, by using a low viscosity material and new diamond-shape electrode configuration. Our proposed device shows high transmittance, fast motion picture response time, low operation voltage, wide viewing angle, and indistinguishable color shift and gamma shift. We also investigate the rubbing angle effects on transmittance and response time. When rubbing angle is 0 degree, the virtual wall effect is strong, resulting in fast response time but compromised transmittance. When rubbing angle is greater than 1.2 degree, the virtual walls disappear, as a result, the transmittance increases dramatically, but the tradeoff is in slower response time. We also demonstrate a photo-responsive guest-host liquid crystal (LC) dimmer to enhance the ambient contrast ratio in augmented reality displays. The LC composition consists of photo-stable chiral agent, photosensitive azobenzene, and dichroic dye in a nematic host with negative dielectric anisotropy. In this device, transmittance changes from bright state to dark state by exposing a low intensity UV or blue light. Reversal process can be carried out by red light or thermal effect. Such a polarizer-free photo-activated dimmer can also be used for wide range of applications, such as diffractive photonic devices, portable information system, vehicular head-up displays, and smart window for energy saving purpose. A dual-stimuli polarizer-free dye-doped liquid crystal (LC) device is demonstrated as a dimmer. Upon UV/blue light exposure, the LC directors and dye molecules turn from initially vertical alignment (high transmittance state) to twisted fingerprint structure (low transmittance state). The reversal process is accelerated by combining a longitudinal electric field to unwind the LC directors from twisted fingerprint to homeotropic state, and a red light to transform the cis azobenzene back to trans. Such an electric-field-assisted reversal time can be reduced from ~10s to a few milliseconds, depending on the applied voltage. Considering power consumption, low manufacturing cost, and large fabrication tolerance, this device can be used as a smart dimmer to enhance the ambient contrast ratio for augmented reality displays.
