Show moreFamilies from all over the world come to the United States for a new beginning. More often than not, these families speak little or no English. A challenge that teachers face every day is trying to communicate with children and their families who speak little or no English. Following a review of the various forms of communication and types of parental involvement, a survey was created. This survey was completed by elementary teachers in a local lower socioeconomic area elementary school with a high mobility rates and high levels of English Language Learner (ELL) students. The results of this study will offer the most effective ways teachers can openly communicate with families who speak little or no English. The results suggest that although vital, communication between the parents of ELL students and the teacher varies from teacher to teacher. Additionally, having resources available to teachers at the school and using the resources available allows parents and teachers to communicate effectively.

Show moreThis study examined teacher characteristics and practices identified as effective through current research for teaching students with complex communication needs. For this population, communication issues are more complex than those typically encountered in other settings. Specifically, the researcher asked: what are the desired characteristics and practices for this population, and are the desired characteristics and practices present in current settings? Working with six teachers in a large urban school district, this study utilized a multiple case study design. Criteria for participation included the teacher as the primary reading/language arts instructor for a student who used an augmentative and alternative communication system (AAC). This study builds on prior research and fills a gap in current research through a focus on the teacher. This study was conducted through three phases: a survey of teacher characteristics, observations of teacher practices, and a semi-structured interview. Four instruments were utilized to ensure validity. Results suggest that teachers for this population require knowledge on language and literacy specific to the non-verbal child. AAC training is critical in regard to programming and navigation. The use of other technology supports which offer auditory, visual, and access options are essential. Strong collaborative teams (school and district) are also important. However, one of the most significant findings documents that success may lie with the teacher's 'choice' to embrace challenges with this population. This issue of 'choice' questions the teacher's willingness (personally or professionally) to accept this commitment. This finding also questions the degree to which teachers are willing to pursue opportunities. Recommendations include the need for: training (teachers and paraprofessionals), pursuit of opportunities for supports, addressing parent issues, a district-based liaison between home and school, and to examine issues which prevent the recommended instructional time (90 minutes of reading instruction plus 45 minutes of supplemental instruction). Conclusions indicated that participants ranged from effective to ineffective. The identification of 'highly qualified' teachers through level of education and amount of experience did not correlate with participants' level of effectiveness. Given the limited research available, this study addresses a need in the field and lays the foundation for future research with this population.

Show moreSituational awareness in connected and automated vehicle (CAV) systems becomes particularly challenging in the presence of non-line of sight objects and/or objects beyond the sensing range of local onboard sensors. Despite the fact that fully autonomous driving requires the use of multiple redundant sensor systems, primarily including camera, radar, and LiDAR, the non-line of sight object detection problem still persists due to the inherent limitations of those sensing techniques. To tackle this challenge, the inter-vehicle communication system is envisioned that allows vehicles to exchange self-status updates aiming to extend their effective field of view and thus compensate for the limitations of the vehicle tracking subsystem that relies substantially on onboard sensing devices. Tracking capability in such systems can be further improved through the cooperative sharing of locally created map data instead of transmitting only self-update messages containing core basic safety message (BSM) data. In the cooperative sharing of safety messages, it is imperative to have a scalable communication protocol to ensure optimal use of the communication channel. This dissertation contributes to the analysis of the scalability issue in vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication and then addresses the range issue of situational awareness in CAV systems by proposing a content-adaptive V2X communication architecture. To that end, we first analyze the BSM scheduling protocol standardized in the SAE J2945/1 and present large-scale scalability results obtained from a high-fidelity simulation platform to demonstrate the protocol's efficacy to address the scalability issues in V2X communication. By employing a distributed opportunistic approach, the SAE J2945/1 congestion control algorithm keeps the overall offered channel load within an optimal operating range, while meeting the minimum tracking requirements set forth by upper-layer applications. This scheduling protocol allows event-triggered and vehicle-dynamics driven message transmits that further the situational awareness in a cooperative V2X context. Presented validation results of the congestion control algorithm include position tracking errors as the performance measure, with the age of communicated information as the evaluation measure. In addition, we examine the optimality of the default settings of the congestion control parameters. Comprehensive analysis and trade-off study of the control parameters reveal some areas of improvement to further the algorithm's efficacy. Motivated by the effectiveness of channel congestion control mechanism, we further investigate message content and length adaptations, together with transmit rate control. Reasonably, the content of the exchanged information has a significant impact on the map accuracy in cooperative driving systems. We investigate different content control schemes for a communication architecture aimed at map sharing and evaluate their performance in terms of position tracking error. This dissertation determines that message content should be concentrated to mapped objects that are located farther away from the sender to the edge of the local sensor range. This dissertation also finds that optimized combination of message length and transmit rate ensures the optimal channel utilization for cooperative vehicular communication, which in turn improves the situational awareness of the whole system.

Show moreObesity is one of the major public health issues in the United States, often regarded as part of a global crisis. Companies invest billions of dollars each year towards television advertising campaigns aimed at convincing audiences how their ground-breaking discovery 'battles the bulge' or somehow offers an increased health benefit. This study examined how advertisers presented health-related claims, including health and nutrient-content claims, in U.S. adult-targeted television food commercials. The claims were compared to FTC, FDA, and USDA laws, regulations, and recommendations. A content analysis of food advertising was conducted of commercials from major and cable network programs broadcast during prime-time in the first quarter of 2009. The majority of claims match current regulations when compared to Federal references. The results show that Nutrient and Wellness claims were the most frequently cited. The type of benefit, Healthy Eating, emerged almost 3 times more than any other benefit type. This is also similar to those results which suggest advertisers' intentions were to promote overall wellness in their content delivery. As such, the Wellness Approach was identified and conceptualized, leading towards full development of a Wellness Effect theory. Implications and future research opportunities are discussed on both a theoretical and practical level.
