Show moreThe combustion of ultra-lean fuel to air mixtures provides an efficient way to convert the chemical energy of hydrocarbons into useful power. Conventional burning techniques of a mixture have defined flammability limits beyond which a flame cannot self-propagate due to heat losses. Matrix stabilized porous medium combustion is an advanced technique in which a solid porous matrix within the combustion chamber accumulates heat from the hot gaseous products and preheats incoming reactants. This heat recirculation extends the standard flammability limits and allows the burning of ultra-lean fuel mixtures, conserving energy resources, or the burning of gases of low calorific value, utilizing otherwise wasted resources. The heat generated by the porous burner can be harvested with thermoelectric devices for a reliable method of generating electricity for portable electronic devices by the burning of otherwise noncombustible mixtures.The design of the porous media burner, its assembly and testing are presented. Highly porous (~80% porosity) alumina foam was used as the central media and alumina honeycomb structure was used as an inlet for fuel and an outlet for products of the methane-air combustion. The upstream and downstream honeycomb structures were designed with pore sizes smaller than the flame quenching distance, preventing the flame from propagating outside of the central section. Experimental results include measurements from thermocouples distributed throughout the burner and on each side of the thermoelectric module along with associated current, voltage and power outputs. Measurements of the burner with catalytic coating were obtained for stoichiometric and lean mixtures and compared to the results obtained from the catalytically inert matrix, showing the effect on overall efficiency for the combustion of fuel-lean mixtures.

Show moreEffective solvent extraction incorporating electromagnetic heating is a relatively new concept that relies on Radio Frequency heating and solvents to replace steam in current thermal processes for the purpose of extracting bitumen from oil rich sands. The work presented here will further the understanding of the near wellbore flow of this two phase system in order to better predict solvent vaporization dynamics and heat rates delivered to the pay zone. This numerical study details the aspects of phase change of immiscible, two component, liquid/vapor systems confined in porous media heated by electromagnetic radiation, approximated by a spatially dependent volumetric heat source term in the energy equation.The objective of this work is to utilize the numerical methodology presented herein to predict maximum solvent delivery rates to a heated isotropic porous matrix to avoid the over-saturation of the heated pay zone. The total liquid mass content and mean temperature in the domain are monitored to assess whether the liquid phase is fully vaporized prior to flowing across the numerical domain boundary. The distribution of the volumetric heat generation rate used to emulate the physics of electromagnetic heating in the domain decays away from the well bore. Some of the heat generated acts to superheat the already vaporized solvent away from the interface, requiring heat delivery rates that are many times greater than the energy required to turn the liquid solvent to vapor determined by an energy balance. Results of the parametric study from the pay zone simulations demonstrate the importance of the Darcian flow resistance forces added by the porous media to stabilize the flow being pulled away from the wellbore in the presence of gravity. For all cases involving an increase in solvent delivery rate with a constant heat rate, the permeability range required for full vaporization must decrease in order to balance the gravitational forces pulling the solvent from the heated region. For all conditions of permeability and solvent delivery rates, sufficiently increasing the heat rate results in complete vaporization of the liquid solvent. For the case of decreasing solvent delivery rate, a wider range of higher permeabilities for a given heat rate can be utilized while achieving full vaporization. A three dimensional surface outlining the transition from partially vaporized to fully vaporized regimes is constructed relating the solvent delivery rate, the permeability of the porous near wellbore zone and the heat rate supplied to the domain. For the range of permeabilities ~3000mD observed in these types of well bores, low solvent delivery rates and high heat rates must be utilized in order to achieve full vaporization.

Show moreA combustion chamber incorporating a high temperature porous matrix was design and tested. The effects and merits of combining combustion on porous media and catalytic enhancement were explored, in addition to the proof of concept of integrating these technologies with simple heat engines, such as thermoelectric generators, to generate efficient and reliable power. The direct observation of the flame during the combustion becomes possible due to a specially designed stainless steel chamber incorporating a quartz window where the initiation and propagation of the combustion reaction/flame was directly visible. The simple design of the combustion chamber allowed for a series of thermocouples to be arranged on the central axis of the porous media. With the thermocouples as output and two flow controllers controlling the volumetric flow of fuel and air as input, it was possible to explore the behavior of the flame at different volumetric flow ranges and fuel to air ratios. Additionally the design allowed for thermoelectric modules to be placed in the walls of the combustion chamber. Using combustion as a heat source and passive fins for cooling, the device was able to generate enough power to power a small portable electronic device. The effects of La-Sr-Fe-Cr-Ru based perovskite catalysts, on matrix stabilized combustion in a porous ceramic media were also explored. Highly porous silicon carbide ceramics are used as a porous media for a catalytically enhanced superadiabatic combustion of a lean mixture of methane and air. Perovskite catalytic enhancement of SiC porous matrix with La0.75Sr0.25Fe0.6Cr0.35Ru0.05O3, La0.75Sr0.25Fe0.6Cr0.4O3, La0.75Sr0.25Fe0.95Ru0.05O3, La0.75Sr0.05Cr0.95Ru0.05O3, and LaFe0.95Ru0.05O3 were used to enhance combustion. The flammability limits of the combustion of methane and air were explored using both inert and catalytically enhanced surfaces of the porous ceramic media. By coating the SiC porous media with perovskite catalysts it was possible to lower the minimum stable equivalence ratio and achieve more efficient combustion.

Show moreIn air-cooled heat exchangers, air-side thermal resistance is usually the largest compared to conduction and liquid-side thermal resistances. Thus, reducing the air-side thermal resistance with fin-like structures can greatly improve overall cooling performance. The performance of these structures is usually characterized by the rate of heat which can be transferred and the pumping power required. One promising solution is to use a high-thermal-conductivity material with a large surface per unit volume such as carbon foam. This study presents a method of utilizing V-shape corrugated carbon foam. The air-side heat transfer coefficient and the pressure drop across the foam have been investigated using different V-shape foam geometrical configurations obtained by varying its length and height. Based on design considerations and availability, the foam length has been chosen to be 25.4, 38.1 and 52.1 mm while its height is 4.4, 6.8 and 11.7 mm, resulting in nine different test pieces of foam with different heights and lengths.A total number of 81 experiments were carried out and results show that of the nine V-shape configurations, the foam with the shortest length and tallest height gives the best performance. Experimental results are also compared with the results of prior work using different carbon foam geometries. It is shown that V-shape corrugated carbon foam provides higher heat transfer coefficient and better overall performance.Numerical method is performed next. The effect of the foam length and height on thermal and hydraulic performance is demonstrated and discussed. There is excellent agreement between numerical and experimental results. An analysis is also made to better understand the transport phenomena that occur within the porous matrix. For laminar flow of air, one of the findings is the high heat transfer effectiveness of the foam which means a foam thickness of 1 mm or less is sufficient for heat transfer enhancement for air speed of up to 4 m/s. To demonstrate the feasibility of using carbon foam, an analytical case study of carbon foam heat exchanger was performed and compared to traditional heat exchanger with the same heat load. Results show that a volume saving of up to 55% can be obtained by using carbon foam instead of traditional aluminum fins.Another attractive carbon-based material is the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) which has an in-plane thermal conductivity of about 1700 W/m.K and an out-of-plane k of about 8 W/m.K at room temperature. HOPG is a graphite material with a high degree of preferred crystallographic orientation. HOPG can be very useful in thermal applications when axial conduction is critical and needed to be minimized as in recuperators used in cryocoolers and compact power generation. Also, an analysis of HOPG for micro-channel applications shows that the high in-plane thermal conductivity of HOPG, which is far greater than that of copper and aluminum, allows a taller height for the micro-channel. This translates to an increase in the heat flux removal rate by two to three times.

There are multiple factors, other than pollution that need to be considered for developing a substitute for Internal Combustion Engine, like specific power, throttle response, torque speed curve, fuel consumption and refueling infrastructure. External combustion in a steam engine seems to be a bright idea, for a cleaner and more environment friendly alternative to the IC engine that can satisfy the multiple technology requirements mentioned. One way of performing external heterogeneous combustion is to use porous ceramic media, which is a modern and innovative technique, used in many practical applications. The heterogeneous combustion inside ceramic porous media provides numerous advantages, as the ceramic, acts as a regenerator that distributes heat from the flue gases to the upstream reactants, resulting in the extended flammability limits of the reactants. The heat exchanger design is the major challenge in developing an external combustion engine because of the space, such systems consume in an automobile. The goal of the research is to develop a compact and efficient heat exchanger for the application. The proposed research uses natural gas as a fuel that is mixed with air for combustion and the generated flue gases are fed to a heat exchanger to generate superheated system for performing engine work to the vehicle. The performed research is focused on designing and modeling of the boiler heat exchanger section. The justification for selection of working fluid and power plant technology is presented as part of the research, where the proposed system consists of an Air and Flue Gas Path and a Water and Steam Path. Models are developed for coupled thermal and fluid analysis of a heat exchanger, consisting of three sections. The first section converts water to a saturated liquid. The second portion consists of a section where water is converted to saturated steam. The third section is the superheater, where saturated steam is converted to superheated steam. The Finite Element Model is appropriately meshed and boundary conditions set up to solve the mass, momentum and energy conservation equations. The k-epsilon model is implemented to take care of turbulence. Analytical calculations following the established codes and standards are also executed to develop the design.

The porous pin fins were made from aluminum and had a pore density of 10 pores per inch (PPI). The pressure drop through the channel was also determined for several flow rates and presented in terms of the friction factor. Local heat transfer coefficients on the endwall were measured using Thermochromic Liquid Crystal (TLC) sheets recorded with a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera. Static and total pressure measurements were taken at the entrance and exit of the test section to determine the overall pressure drop through the channel and explain the heat transfer trends through the channel. Results are presented for Reynolds numbers between 25000 and 130000 and a blockage ratio (blocked channel area divided by open channel area) of 50%. All results were compared to the corresponding results obtained using solid pins. All experiments were carried out in a 150 mm by 500 mm channel with an X/D of 1.72, a Y/D of 2.0, and a Z/D of 1.72 for the porous pins. It was found that for the range of Reynold's numbers tested in this study, the porous pin array consistently resulted in a larger friction factor, and therefore greater losses than a geometrically similar array of solid pins. The friction factors for the solid pin array were between 9.5 and 10.5, similar to the results found in the literature. For the porous pins, however, the friction factors were significantly increased as the Reynold's number increased, reaching as high as 15.3 at the highest Reynold's number tested. The heat transfer enhancement for the porous pins was found to be between 150 and 170% while the solid pins resulted in a heat transfer enhancement between 190 and 230%.

Our goal is to produce improved simulations to more accurately and efficiently model the changes in pressure as gas flows through a porous medium. A two-dimensional model in space known as the nonlinear Porous Medium Equation as it is derived from Darcy's law is used. An Alternating-Direction Implicit (ADI) temporal scheme is presented and implemented which reduces our multidimensional problem into a series of one-dimensional problems. We take advantage of explicit approximations for the nonlinear terms using extrapolation formulas derived from Taylor-series, which increases efficiency when compared to other common methods. We couple our ADI temporal scheme with different spatial discretizations including a second-order Finite Difference (FD) method, a fourth-order Orthogonal Spline Collocation (OSC) method, and an Nth-order Chebyshev Spectral method. Accuracy and runtime are compared among the three methods for comparison in a linear analogue of our problem. We see the best results for accuracy when using an ADI-Spectral method in the linear case, but discuss possibilities for increased efficiency using an ADI-OSC scheme. Nonlinear results are presented using the ADI-Spectral method and the ADI-FD method.

To further enhance heterogeneous combustion, the ceramic media can be coated with catalytically active materials, which facilitates surface based chemical reactions that could occur in parallel with gas phase reactions.Within this work, a flow stabilized heterogeneous combustor was designed and developed consisting of a reactant delivery nozzle, combustion chamber, and external instrumentation. The reactant delivery nozzle enables the combustor to operate on mixtures of air, liquid fuel, and gaseous fuel. Although this combustor has high fuel flexibility, only gaseous methane was used within the presented experiments. Within the reactant delivery nozzle, reactants flow through a tube mixer, and a homogeneous gaseous mixture is delivered to the combustion chamber. ?-alumina (?-Al2O3), magnesia stabilized zirconia (MgO-ZrO2), or silicon carbide (SiC) was used as the material for the porous media. Measurement techniques which were incorporated in the combustor include an array of axially mounted thermocouples, an external microphone, an external CCD camera, and a gas chromatograph with thermal conductivity detector which enable temperature measurements, acoustic spectroscopy, characterization of thermal radiative emissions, and composition analysis of exhaust gasses, respectively. Before evaluation of the various solid media in the combustion chamber the substrates and catalysts were characterized using X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. MgO-ZrO2 porous media was found to outperform both ?-Al2O3 and SiC matrices, as it was established that higher temperatures for a given equivalence ratio were achieved when the flame was contained within a MgO-ZrO2 matrix. This was explained by the presence of oxygen vacancies within the MgO doped ZrO2 fluorite lattice which facilitated catalytic reactions. Several catalyst compositions were evaluated to promote combustion within a MgO-ZrO2 matrix even further.Catalysts such as: Pd enhanced WC, ZrB2, Ce0.80Gd0.20O1.90, LaCoO3, La0.80Ca0.20CoO3, La0.75Sr0.25Fe0.95Ru0.05O3, and La0.75Sr0.25Cr0.95Ru0.05O3; were evaluated under lean fuel/air mixtures. LaCoO3 outperformed all other catalysts, by enabling the highest temperatures within the combustion chamber, followed by Ce0.80Gd0.20O1.90. Both LaCoO3 and Ce0.80Gd0.20O1.90 enabled a flame to exist at ?=0.45(&)#177;0.02, however LaCoO3 caused the flame to be much more stable. Furthermore, it was discovered that the coating of MgO-ZrO2 with LaCoO3 significantly enhanced the total emissive power of the combustion chamber. In this work as acoustic spectroscopy was used to characterize heterogeneous combustion for the first time. It was found that there is a dependence of acoustic emission n the equivalence ratio and flame position regardless of media and catalyst combination. By including the solid structure, radiative energy extraction becomes viable, while the solid enables a vast extension of flammability limits compared to conventional flames, while offering dramatically reduced emissions of NOx and CO, and dramatically increased burning velocities. Efforts documented within are used for the development of a streamlined set of design principles, and characterization of the flame's behavior when operating under such conditions, to aid in the development of future combustors for lean burn applications in open flow systems. Principles described herein were developed from a combination of experimental work and reactor network modeling using CHEMKIN-PRO. Experimental work consisted of a parametric analysis of operating conditions pertaining to reactant flow, combustion chamber geometric considerations and the viability of liquid fuel applications. Experimental behavior observed, when utilizing gaseous fuels, was then used to validate model outputs through comparing thermal outputs of both systems. Specific details pertaining to a streamlined chemical mechanism to be used in simulations, included within the appendix, and characterization of surface area of the porous solid are also discussed. Beyond modeling the experimental system, considerations are also undertaken to examine the applicability of exhaust gas recirculation and staged combustion as a means of controlling the thermal and environmental output of porous combustion systems.
