Show moreMultiple related software development projects are often managed concurrently and systematically to deliver a complex software system. This approach of managing multiple interdependent projects together to achieve a common goal is called program management (Pellegrinelli, 1997). A software development program can generate the benefits that cannot be achieved by managing projects individually. The software product development program has the special characteristics such as complexity, uncertainty and interdependence (1995). A software product development program can play an active role in managing the uncertainty and interdependence in the software development process. This dissertation is designed to examine the external communication effectiveness of the program team on the interdependence between the program and the larger organizational context. In addition, this dissertation studies the inter-project coordination effectiveness on uncertainty within a program. Based upon organizational Information Processing Theory (IPT) and Resource Dependence Theory (RDT), theoretical frameworks are developed. The proposed research models are tested by surveying software product development programs across a range of industries. The results will contribute to the understanding of multiple-project communication in a program's context. The specific interactions between coordination/communication and the product development characteristics will provide a guideline for the industrial practices.

Show moreIS vendor organizations are increasingly using program management practices to manage complex projects (Gierra 2004). The move to program teams is due to the realization that the management of many client projects and their underlying dependencies requires teamwork among project managers from different projects (Cooke-Davies 2002; Ferratt et al. 2006; Sanghera 2007). With two separate studies, first we extend the team competence framework and utilize organizational learning theory to understand the antecedents and outcomes of teamwork behaviors. Empirical results from the first study indicated that teamwork behaviors within the program team were significantly related to an increase in team competencies of personnel development, methodology development and dissemination and customer focus. Further, the three program team competencies were a significant predictor of program outcomes. In the second study, we investigate the outcomes of conflict resolution and their impact on program performance. The results indicated that conflict resolution can enhance the level of communication, mutual support and effort among IS program members Directions for practitioners and implications for future research are discussed.

Show moreSince the beginning of project management, people have been asked to perform "more with less" in expeditious time while attempting to balance the inevitable challenge of the time/cost tradeoff. This is especially true within the Department of Defense today in prosecuting the Global War on Terrorism both in Afghanistan and Iraq. An unprecedented and consistent level of Operational Tempo has generated heavy demands on current equipment and has subsequently forced the need to recapitalize several legacy systems until suitable replacements can be implemented. This paper targets the UH-60A:A Recapitalization Program based at the Corpus Christi Army Depot in Corpus Christi, Texas. More specifically, we examine one of the nine existing project sub-networks within the UH-60A:A program, the structural/electrical upgrade phase. In crashing (i.e. adding manpower or labor hours) the network, we determine the minimal cost required to reduce the total completion time of the 68 activities within the network before a target completion time. A linear programming model is formulated and then solved for alternative scenarios. The first scenario is prescribed by the program manager and consists of simply hiring additional contractors to augment the existing personnel. The second and third scenarios consist of examining the effects of overtime, both in an aggressive situation (with limited longevity) and a more moderate situation (displaying greater sustainability over time). The initial linear programming model (Scenario 1) is crashed using estimates given from the program scheduler. The overtime models are crashed using reduced-time crash estimates. For Scenarios 2 and 3, the crashable times themselves are reduced by 50% and 75%, respectively. Initial results indicate that a completion time of 79.5 days is possible without crashing any activities in the network. The five-year historical average completion time is 156 days for this network. We continue to crash the network in each of the three scenarios and determine that the absolute shortest feasible completion times, 73 days for Scenario 1, 76 days for Scenario 2, and 77.5 days for Scenario 3. We further examine the models to observe similarities and differences in which activities get targeted for crashing and how that reduction affects the critical path of the network. These results suggests an in-depth study of using linear programming and applying it to project networks to grant project managers more critical insight that may help them better achieve their respective objectives. This work may also be useful as the groundwork for further refinement and application for maintenance managers conducting day-to-day unit level maintenance operations.

Show moreThis thesis examines how participants of an eight-week nutrition education class utilize disseminated information to manage chronic disease, as well as explores the challenges a community based nutrition education resource center faces in the arena of chronic disease prevention. Per the World Health Organization's Global Report on Diabetes, 422 million adults currently live with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, a four-fold increase since the 1980s. Within the U.S., approximately nine percent of the adult population suffers from diabetes, and obesity, a major contributor to the disease, afflicts nearly thirty-five percent. While medical professionals frame the controlling of chronic disease from a pathophysiological perspective by promoting self-care methods and using language rooted in personal responsibility for successful treatment plans, implementation of such strategies by patients is more nuanced. In Orlando, Florida, staff at a community based, non-profit, nutrition resource center, Hebni Nutrition Consultants Inc., has played a key role in advocating for African-American community health in Central Florida, educating clients about chronic disease prevention and management since their establishment in 1995. Using ethnographic methods of participant-observation and semi- structured interviews, this project explores the challenges the staff of Hebni face operating at the intersection of the public and private sectors, as well as how participants of Hebni's programming understand discourses of empowerment, neoliberal ideas of self-care, and individual versus collective identity, when navigating the biomedical world. This project contributes not only to the growing body of research surrounding health disparities in minority communities, but also how neoliberal policies have shifted responsibility of community health and wellbeing from the state and onto private organizations.

Show moreThe focus of this research was to complete a micro-examination of professional education course content related to classroom management and student motivation in approximately 24 traditional teacher preparation programs (TTPP) drawn from the eight of the 10 largest teacher-producing states. Programs of study, course descriptions from the school catalogs, course syllabi, and student teaching handbooks or field guides for professional education courses were analyzed to determine what, if any, knowledge voids existed within selected programs designed to serve preservice teachers. Specifically, the researcher investigated materials to discover the depth and breadth of the professional education course content related to classroom management and student motivation offered to preservice teachers during their higher education undergraduate experience. The findings of the study have documented that a common practice in the programs reviewed was to infuse the content of each key topic, classroom management or student motivation, into other professional education course work. This practice serves to diminish the depth and breadth of the professional course content presented to the preservice teachers which, in turn, dramatically increases the risk of the development of a knowledge void.

Show moreMindfulness meditation programs, benefits, and outcomes were examined through research previously conducted and published by professionals within five differing disciplines: health and wellness, psychology, elementary education, exceptional education, and medicine. The goal was to find common themes within the differing disciplines in order to gather information about the effectiveness of a mindfulness meditation program to be used in an elementary classroom. In this thesis, the chapter of Health and Wellness is a review of literature that tells the benefits found within meditators, which are not found within non-meditators. The chapter of Psychology explains the social-emotional needs of students, the causes of stress and anxieties amongst students, and the benefits that meditation provides in order to counter the negative effects of stress, anxiety, poverty, etc. The chapter of Elementary Education reviews research literature on the existing mindfulness meditation programs within the United States. This chapter also describes the implementation of such a program in an elementary school, as well as the documented data of the outcomes of the programs. The chapter of Exceptional Education is a review of the research literature on the benefits mindfulness meditation has on students with exceptionalities, such as specific learning disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and autism spectrum disorder. The chapter of Medicine is a retelling of previously published scholarly articles that list the neurological benefits of meditation, and also references the negative side effects to the currently prescribed medications that are being used in the treatment of ADHD.

Show moreThe admission process at higher education institutions has not adapted for online distance education classes taken in high schools, such as those offered by the Florida Virtual School. The purpose of this study was to determine whether online distance education courses taken in high school can serve as an indicator of student success in post-secondary education. An honors program at a large public research university provided the data examined. This honors program stored online distance education information in a database, which allowed for analysis. Presently, the institution's primary undergraduate admission office does not collect or store this type of information. I used SPSS Statistics to calculate logistical regression on this data. My goal was to discover what effect the high school online distance education variables had on the outcome of graduating in four or six years. Graduation rate is a key metric for colleges and universities as an indicator of success. For this reason, I wanted to determine through this study whether high school online distance education assisted in predicting which students will graduate. At least two stakeholders will find this information useful. Admission officers and, more specifically, honors admission officers will gain more insight into the student selection process as this study examines students in the top 10% of the incoming class. The other group, future researchers, will learn from this study and other new studies for even more understanding on this topic. Although the results indicated that high-achieving Florida Virtual School students do not graduate at higher rate than students who have not completed distance education classes, more research is required to understand how the other 90% of student applicants are affected by distance education courses completed in high school.
