Show moreResidential segregation is an issue where multiple variables such as race, class, and income converge. Identifying the remaining variables contributing to the continuation of residential segregation is what remains in order to understand the issue completely. A possible variable that has yet to be considered is the effect that the name of a road has on the surrounding area. The objective of this research is to identify the relationship between Division Streets and residential segregation. Although this relationship may not be causal, the existence of any tie between labels as apparent as 'division' on a road where residential segregation is prominent has many implications. Although it has proven difficult to explain the origin and intent of the name of a road, this research looks to more deeply investigate the situation. Residential segregation is a multifaceted topic and the effect of road labels on society's perception of an area is an untapped resource in defining the situation of residential segregation. Working within the framework that was set up by Massey in the early 1990s this research strives to create a complete picture of residential segregation. Data were collected online from the map application on the website Google. With this technology the largest 100 cities in the United States were searched and as not every city had a Division Street the pool of potential cities to be analyzed diminished. Forty of the 100 largest cities had Division Streets in their city limits. Utilizing the program SimplyMap it was determined that of these 40 Division Streets, only eleven roads served as boundaries for block groups as collected by the United States Census Bureau. These eleven roads were analyzed to determine if there were differences in levels of racial residential segregation on either side. Findings will reveal the relationship between the names of roads and areas of residential segregation. This research does not offer any suggestions on how to eliminate or remedy residential segregation; rather it identifies areas of concern. Ultimately, this data will contribute another layer of understanding about residential segregation.

Show moreABSTRACT The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and 1970s profoundly changed the lives of many young southern White citizens. Southern racism was a product of traditional indoctrination common in the culture of the Old South. During the generations after slavery to the Civil Rights Era, vulnerable White children were typically exposed to racist and prejudiced influences from families, fellow citizens, education, popular culture, and segregation laws established within their communities. The Civil Rights Movement brought forth elaborate legal reforms that broke segregation and enabled integration programs to take place at schools and other public institutions, which ultimately expanded many southerners' cultural awareness of different racial groups. Many accounts on the Civil Rights Movement and its relation to southern White racism are generally confined to narrow descriptions that emphasize extreme resistance measures, such as violence or civil disobedience acted out from members of the White community. Many students who do not study American history beyond the high school or college survey course levels unfortunately learn a limited history about White racism and its relation to the Civil Rights Movement. The sources commonly used in these courses include textbooks, films, and documentaries. Based in part by time and budget constraints, oral histories about White racism are often not incorporated in the classroom curricula. The available sources explain the history of White racism to a limited degree and the fact that it contributed to a mobilization effort to gain civil rights protection for racial minorities. However, they leave out other accounts about White racism relative to the history of the Civil Rights Movement. Many southern White children from this time grew up around prejudiced influences and witnessed blatant racist treatment of African Americans. During their upbringing many of these southern citizens developed solid beliefs in White supremacy and justifiable racial prejudice. Oral testimonies told by them that focus on their racism reveal social, economic, and political details which standard sources do not provide. Their stories demonstrate learned factors commonly found in racism and show how contemporary circumstances, such as living with segregation every day, can impact behaviors. Many common social factors that relate to understanding the roots of southern White racism are often not provided in sources used in most American history courses. Such works leave out a significant percentage of stories from regular White people from the South, and in particular many young individuals, who throughout the Civil Rights Era showed passive contempt, i.e., remaining silent on issues of overt discrimination and racism, toward African Americans as a result of cultural indoctrination. These White individuals' resistances and their youth illustrate a different aspect of prejudice in contrast to the traditional reports on the topic that highlight hate crimes and more stubborn forms of racism. Passivity expressed by these southern White citizens enabled them to reform their prejudices through the encouragement of the Civil Rights Movement. The impact of the era on their thinking offers an important lens that illustrates Civil Rights Movement and southern segregation history. Yet, generally, such perceptions are ignored in many historical works. This thesis attempts to bring out the social and evolutionary elements of White racism in the twentieth century South and the impact of the Civil Rights Movement on White prejudiced behaviors once traditionally found in southern culture that date back to the end of the Civil War and the birth of segregation. In reference to the use of capitalization of certain words I have placed capitals on terms that refer to periods of time such as the Civil Rights Era or events like the Civil Rights Movement. Additionally, groups of people identified with a racial group received recognition with a capital letter. Some of the sources I used from previous eras do not apply capitalization with specific color group terms such as "black" or "white," and I have left them as they are printed in their works. As I explain the evolution of racism and prejudice in the first half of the twentieth century, I also want to illustrate the evolution of racial labeling from the past three decades. For example, textbooks from the early 1990s describe African Americans and Caucasians as "black" and "white." However, texts from the twenty-first century label these groups as either "African Americans" or "White." The purpose of this is to show that many American historians and authors continue to evolve their understanding of racial identification.

It is difficult to overstate the significance of the DNA molecule. The now-completed Human Genome Project stands out as the most significant testimony yet to the importance of understanding DNA. The Human Genome Project (HGP) enumerated many areas of application of genomic research including molecular medicine, energy sources, environmental applications, agriculture and livestock breeding to name just a few. (Science, 2008) In addition to the fact that DNA contains the informational blueprints for all life, it also exhibits other remarkable characteristics most of which are either poorly understood or remain complete mysteries. One of those completely mysterious characteristics is the ability of DNA molecules to spontaneously segregate with other DNA molecules of similar sequence. This ability has been observed for years in living organisms and is known as (")homologous pairing.(") It is completely reproducible in a laboratory and defies explanation. What is the underlying mechanism that facilitates long-range attraction between 2 double-helix DNA molecules containing similar nucleotide sequences? The fact that we cannot answer this question indicates we are missing a fundamental piece of information concerning the DNA bio-molecule. The research proposed herein investigated using the Nano-scale Molecular Dynamics NAMD (Phillips et al., 2005) simulator the following hypotheses:H(Simulate Observed Closure NULL) : = Current MD force field models when used to model DNA molecule segments, contain sufficient variable terms and parameters to describe and reproduce directed segregating movement (closure of the segments) as previously observed by the Imperial College team between two Phi X 174 DNA molecules. H(Resonance NULL) : = Current MD force field models when used to model DNA molecule segments in a condensed phased solvent contain sufficient variable terms and parameters to reproduce theorized molecular resonation in the form of frequency content found in water between the segments. H(Harmonized Resonance NULL) : = Current MD force field models of DNA molecule segments in a condensed phase solvent produce theorized molecular resonation in the form of frequency content above and beyond the expected normal frequency levels found in water between the segments. H(Sequence Relationship NULL): = The specific frequencies and amplitudes of the harmonized resonance postulated in H(Harmonized Resonance NULL) are a direct function of DNA nucleotide sequence. H(Resonance Causes Closure NULL) : = Interacting harmonized resonation produces an aggregate force between the 2 macro-molecule segments resulting in simulation of the same directed motion and segment closure as observed by the Imperial College team between two Phi X 174 DNA molecules. After nearly six months of molecular dynamic simulation for H(Simulate Observed Closure NULL) and H(Resonance Causes Closure NULL) no evidence of closure between two similar sequenced DNA segments was found. There exist several contributing factors that potentially affected this result that are described in detail in the Results section. Simulations investigating H( Resonance NULL), H(Harmonized Resonance NULL) and the emergent hypothesis H(Sequence Relationship NULL) on the other hand, revealed a rich selection of periodic pressure variation occurring in the solvent between simulated DNA molecules. About 20% of the power in Fourier coefficients returned by Fast Fourier Transforms performed on the pressure data was characterized as statistically significant and was located in less than 2% of the coefficients by count. This unexpected result occurred consistently in 5 different system configurations with considerable system-to-system variation in both frequency and magnitude. After careful analysis given the extent of our experiments the data was found to be in support of H( Resonance NULL), and H(Harmonized Resonance NULL) . Regarding the emergent hypothesis H(Sequence Relationship NULL), further analysis was done on the aggregate data set looking for correlation between nucleotide sequence and frequency/magnitude. Some of the results may be related to sequence but were insufficient to prove it. Overall the conflicting results were inconclusive so the hypothesis was neither accepted nor rejected. Of particular interest to future researchers it was noted that the computational simulations performed herein were NOT able to reproduce what we know actually happens in a laboratory environment. DNA segregation known to occur in-vitro during the Imperial College investigation did not occur in our simulation. Until this discrepancy is resolved MM simulation should not as yet be considered a suitable tool for further investigation of Homologous Chromosome Pairing. In Chapter 5 specific follow on research is described in priority of need addressing several new questions.

Show moreThe intent of this thesis is to analyze the racial attitudes of residents in the Orlando MSA towards Puerto Rican migrants that have moved as a result of Hurricane Maria and analyze the effects these attitudes may have on racial residential segregation in Central Florida. As the state with the third largest population of Latinos, Florida's residential landscape continues to be uniquely formed by a diverse, and markedly Latino, population. Florida's location in relation to South American and Caribbean countries has made it an opportune destination for immigrants and refugees. Therefore, it came as no surprise that when Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico in late 2017, thousands of Puerto Ricans sought refuge in Florida. This thesis examines racial attitudes towards this group of Puerto Rican migrants and the ways in which they could potentially affect neighborhood demographics. The study proceeds by collecting survey responses from participants living in the Orlando areas being analyzed. The survey asks participants about their general views of Puerto Rican migrants, it tests their knowledge of racial residential patterns in Orlando, and it analyzes their neighborhood preferences using a show card method.

Show moreIn modern turbine engines for propulsion and energy generation, thermal barrier coating (TBCs) protect hot-section blades and vanes, and play a critical role in enhancing reliability, durability and operation efficiency. In this study, thermal cyclic lifetime and microstructural degradation of electron beam physical vapor deposited (EB-PVD) Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) with (Ni,Pt)Al bond coat and Hf- and/or Y- modified CMSX-4 superalloy substrates were examined. Thermal cyclic lifetime of TBCs was measured using a furnace thermal cycle test that consisted of 10-minute heat-up, 50-minute dwell at 1135C, and 10-minute forced-air-quench. TBC lifetime was observed to improve from 600 cycles to over 3200 cycles with appropriated Hf- and/or Y alloying of CMSX-4 superalloys. This significant improvement in TBC lifetime is the highest reported lifetime in literature with similar testing parameters. Beneficial role of reactive element (RE) on the durability of TBCS were systematically investigated in this study. Photostimulated luminescence spectroscopy (PL) was employed to non-destructively measure the residual stress within the TGO scale as a function of thermal cycling. Extensive microstructural analysis with emphasis on the YSZ/TGO interface, TGO scale, TGO/bond coat interface was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (STEM) as a funcion of thermal cycling including after the spallation failure. Focused ion beam in-situ lift-out (FIB-INLO) technique was employed to prepare site-specific TEM specimens. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) were also employed for phase identification and interfacial chemical analysis. While undulation of TGO/bond coat interface (e.g., rumpling and ratcheting) was observed to be the main mechanism of degradation for the TBCs on baseline CMSX-4, the same interface remained relatively flat (e.g., suppressed rumpling and ratcheting) for durable TBCs on Hf- and/or Y-modified CMSX-4. The fracture paths changed from the YSZ/TGO interface to the TGO/bond coat interface when rumpling was suppressed. The geometrical incompatibility between the undulated TGO and EB-PVD YSZ lead to the failure at the YSZ/TGO interface for TBCs with baseline CMSX-4. The magnitude of copressive residual stress within the TGO scale measured by PL gradually decreased as a function of thermal cycling for TBCs with baseline CMSX-4 superalloy substrates. This gradual decrease corrsponds well to the undulation of the TGO scale that may lead to relaxation of the compressive residual stress within the TGO scale. For TBCs with Hf- and/or Y-modified CMSX-4 superalloy substrates, the magnitude of compressive residual stress within the TGO scale remained relatively constant throughout the thermal cycling, although PL corresponding to the stress-relief caused by localized cracks at the TGO/bond coat interface and within the TGO scale was observed frequently starting 50% of lifetime. A slightly smaller parabolic growth constant and grain size of the TGO scale was observed for TBCs with Hf- and/or Y- modified CMSX-4. Small monoclinic HfO2 precipitates were observed to decorate grain boundaries and the triple pointes within the alpha-Al2O3 scale for TBCs with Hf- and/or Y-modified CMSX-4 substrates. Segregation of Hf/Hf4+ at the TGO/bond coat interfaces was also observed for TBCs with Hf- and/or Y-modified CMSX-4 superalloys substrates. Adherent and pore-free YSZ/TGO interface was observed for TBCs with Hf- and/or Y-modified CMSX-4, while a significant amount of decohesion at the YSZ/TGO interface was observed for TBCs with baseline CMSX-4. The beta-NiAl(B2) phase in the (Ni,Pt)Al bond coat was observed to partially transform into gama prime-Ni3Al (L12) phase due to depletion of Al in the bond coat during oxidation. More importantly, the remaining beta-NiAl phase transformed into L10 martensitic phase upon cooling even though there was no significant difference in these phase transformations for all TBCs. Results from these microstructural observations are documented to elucidate mechanisms that suppress the rumpling of the TGO/bond coat interface, which is responsible for superior performance of EB-PVD TBCs with (Ni,Pt)Al bond coat and Hf- and/or Y-modified CMXS-4 superalloy.

Studies have shown that the amount of women in the workplace has exponentially increased. In fact, "they caught up with men in the rates of higher-education graduation, they increased their training and representation in formerly male-dominated professional fields and they entered many previously male dominated occupations" (Vokić, 2017). However the increase of representation doesn't necessarily positively correlate with the treatment of women in the workforce. In many countries the most prominent journalists remain male. The purpose of this paper is to detect if Spanish-language journalism is male dominated in regard to the kinds of stories male and female reporters are assigned. Through the observation of which gender gets assigned hard/soft news stories we will examine if this pattern continues in Spanish-language broadcast journalism. We will determine if stereotypes and gender roles are being reinforced in the media through the assignment of stories to reporters.

Show moreDiscerning distribution, density, and abundance of organisms is essential for conservation and management of imperiled species. However, simple counts of sampled individuals are often not adequate to make such estimates, this is especially true for large and highly mobile marine animals. Green turtles (Chelonia mydas) are a highly migratory, long-lived, late-maturing, marine megafauna, that is beginning to recover from severe global population declines. Distance sampling techniques can be used to generate estimates of abundance of green turtles in foraging grounds which have been relatively unstudied in the Northeastern Atlantic basin, filling in important data gaps in a species that is of critical conservation concern. The Quicksands foraging grounds located west of Key West, Florida, USA is used by both sub-adult and adult green turtles. Standardized transects were performed 18 times between 2006 (-) 2018, and using the collected data; abundances, spatial distribution and evidence of spatial segregation were generated through density surface models and null mode analysis. Densities of foraging green turtles rival some of the largest densities known in the world. Spatial segregation of the two size classes is evident on the foraging ground and may be attributed to differing predator detection and avoidance strategies of the size classes Finally, given the high densities of animals found on the foraging grounds and the rise in general population levels of green turtles and drop in population of green turtle predators (i.e. large sharks), concern is raised for the long term sustainably of the Quicksands seagrass pastures.
